Proximity-induced equilibrium supercurrent and perfect superconducting diode effect due to band asymmetry

Herein we theoretically investigate the consequences of proximity-induced conventional superconductivity in metals that break time-reversal and inversion symmetries through their energy dispersion. We discover behaviors impossible in an isolated superconductor such as an equilibrium supercurrent that apparently violates a no-go theorem and, at suitable topological defects, nonconservation of electric charge reminiscent of the chiral anomaly. The equilibrium supercurrent is expected to be trainable by a helical electromagnetic field in the normal state. Remarkably, if the band asymmetry exceeds the critical current of the parent superconductor in appropriate units, we predict a perfect superconducting diode effect with diode coefficient unity. We propose toroidal metals such as UNi 4 ⁢B and metals with directional scalar spin chiral order as potential platforms.

Materials interactions between the thermoelectric converter and the 5kwe reactor system

The integration of a compact thermoelectric converter with a 5-kwe reactor system is described. Material interaction uncertainties study is also presented. This includes degradation of the required austenitic - refractory metal transition joint during operation at high temperatures; loss of corrosion resistance; embrittlement by the presence of hydrogen; and loss of design margin by transport of interstitial elements. Analysis and limited experimental evidence indicate that these potential materials interactions can be adequately controlled. Group 5-2 refractory metals can be utilized without unacceptable adverse effect on system reliability.

Materials development for precision segmented reflector applications

The requirements developed to guide the selection of current and future materials for precision segmented reflectors are presented along with a list of desirable properties. Some potential candidate materials including modified fiber reinforced organic matrix composites as well as carbon/carbon composites, graphite/glass composites, and metal matrix composites are identified. It is noted that in the near term, it is likely that modified fiber reinforced organic matrix composites have good applicability. In the longer term, materials such as carbon/carbon composites, graphite/glass composites and metal matrix composites may provide the best mix of properties.

Evaluation of Sorbents for Acetylene Separation in Atmosphere Revitalization Loop Closure

State-of-the-art carbon dioxide reduction technology uses a Sabatier reactor to recover water from metabolic carbon dioxide. In order to maximize oxygen loop closure, a byproduct of the system, methane, must be reduced to recover hydrogen. NASA is currently exploring a microwave plasma methane pyrolysis system for this purpose. The resulting product stream of this technology includes unreacted methane, product hydrogen, and acetylene. The hydrogen and the small amount of unreacted methane resulting from the pyrolysis process can be returned to the Sabatier reactor thereby substantially improving the overall efficiency of the system. However, the acetylene is a waste product that must be removed from the pyrolysis product. Two materials have been identified as potential sorbents for acetylene removal: zeolite 4A, a commonly available commercial sorbent, and HKUST-1, a newly developed microporous metal. This paper provides an explanation of the rationale behind acetylene removal and the results of separation testing with both materials

The potential application of VS 2 as an electrode material for Mg ion battery: A DFT study

Herein, by means of first-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), the electrochemical properties of monolayer VS 2 (M-VS 2 ), double-layer VS 2 (D-VS 2 ) and bulk VS 2 (B-VS 2 ) as electrode materials for Mg-ion batteries (MIBs) were comprehensively explored. The computation results reveal that Mg atom can strongly bind with the three different forms of VS 2 . All of the Mg adsorbed VS 2 systems demonstrate metallic characteristics, which indicates a good electronic conductivity. In addition, crystal orbital hamiltonian population shows that the stability of V-S bond is weakened after adsorption of Mg atom. The low diffusion barriers of Mg give rise to the high rate performance of VS 2 in MIBs. More interestingly, the three types of VS 2 display same storage ability for Mg cations, which can adsorb 0.5 Mg atoms for VS 2 , producing maximum theoretical capacity 233 mA h g -1 for MIBs. Furthermore, the average working voltages results suggest that M-VS 2 can be employed as anode materials, while D-VS 2 , B-VS 2 can be used as cathode materials for MIBs.

Novel Class of Rhenium Borides Based on Hexagonal Boron Networks Interconnected by Short B 2 Dumbbells

Transition metal borides are known due to their attractive mechanical, electronic, refractive, and other properties. A new class of rhenium borides was identified by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells between 26 and 75 GPa. Recoverable to ambient conditions, compounds rhenium triboride (ReB 3 ) and rhenium tetraboride (ReB 4 ) consist of close-packed single layers of rhenium atoms alternating with boron networks built from puckered hexagonal layers, which link short bonded (~ 1.7 angstrom) axially oriented B 2 dumbbells. The short and incompressible Re-B and B-B bonds oriented along the hexagonal c-axis contribute to low axial compressibility comparable with the linear compressibility of diamond. Sub-millimeter samples of ReB 3 and ReB 4 were synthesized in a large-volume press at pressures as low as 33 GPa and used for material characterization. Crystals of both compounds are metallic and hard (Vickers hardness, H V = 34(3) GPa). Geometrical, crystal-chemical, and theoretical analysis considerations suggest that potential ReB x compounds with x > 4 can be based on the same principle of structural organization as in ReB 3 and ReB 4 and possess similar mechanical and electronic properties.

Interfacial Issues and Modification of Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Li Metal Anode in Liquid and Solid Electrolytes

Abstract The high energy density required for the next generation of lithium batteries will likely be enabled by a shift toward lithium metal anode from the conventional intercalation‐based anode such as graphite. However, several critical challenges for Li metal originate from its highly reactive nature and the hostless reaction of deposition and stripping impede the practical use of Li metal as an anode. The role of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is very important for the Li metal anode where the SEI must protect the dynamically changing surface of the Li metal. Since the SEI‐generating reaction mechanisms for the two different electrolyte systems, liquid and solid, are considerably different, the SEI layers formed between the Li metal and the electrolytes in the two electrolyte systems have substantially different properties, causing different interfacial issues. Inhibition of the interfacial problems requires different strategies to reinforce the SEI layer for each of the electrolyte systems. However, the differences in the two electrolyte systems have not been clearly compared in the prior literature. In this report, the interfacial issues for the two different electrolyte systems are compared and different strategies for SEI modification are provided to overcome the issues.

Ironing out the transition metal contribution to the magnetism of the n = 3 members of the homologous series Pr n +1 M n Ge 3 n +1 (M = Fe, Co): Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 vs. Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10

The Ln n+1 M n X 3n+1 (Ln = lanthanide, M = transition metal, and X = tetrel) homologous series provides a platform to study collective phenomena in quantum materials. Here, in this work, we compare the crystal growth, structure, and magnetic properties of the n = 3 members of the Pr n+1 M n Ge 3n+1 (M = Fe, Co) analogues, Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 (a = 4.3207 (10) Å, b = 35.523 (8) Å, c = 4.2982 (15) Å, and V = 659.7 (3) Å 3 ) and Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 (a = 4.3091 (12) Å, b = 35.750 (9) Å, c = 4.2807 (11) Å, and V = 659.4 (3) Å 3 ). We determined that the ideal flux growth conditions for each compound are highly dependent on the concentration of Sn flux and quench temperature. Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 orders ferromagnetically at 10 K along the c-direction while Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 orders antiferromagnetically at 16 K along the b-direction. For both compounds, we observed a magnetic moment higher than that expected for only Pr 3+ ions (3.58 µ B /Pr), implying that the transition metal ions contribute to magnetic ordering (3.91, 3.48, and 3.69 µ B /Pr for Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 , and 3.76, 4.04, and 3.83 µ B /Pr for Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 measured along the a-, b-, and c-directions, respectively). Moreover, the zero-field Mössbauer spectrum obtained at 4.2 K for Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 demonstrates that the iron sites participate in magnetic ordering.

Assessment of deep levels with selenium concentration in Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y room temperature detector materials

Incorporation of Se into Cd 1–x Zn x Te (CZT) to form the quaternary compound semiconductor Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y (CZTS) has proven to be an effective solution for compensating the major flaws associated with CZT, including poor homogeneity and high concentrations of electronically active deep levels that limit the performance of CZT detectors. In order to investigate how deep levels are affected by the Se concentration in CZTS, we performed photoinduced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) measurements on CZTS crystals grown by the traveling heater method (THM) with 10% atomic Zn and varying atomic percentage of Se from 1.5% to 7.0%. The PICTS scans for up to 4% Se showed an exponential reduction in the capture cross section of deep levels associated with Te secondary phases in conjunction with an increase in a deep level positioned near the mid-gap, which initially increases the electron trapping time before degrading again at higher Se concentrations. The PICTS peaks present in 7% Se were anomalous relative to the other crystals and are expected to originate from transition metal impurities found in the lower-purity CdSe precursor material.
