Effects of atmospheric turbulence on optical equipment in prelaunch alignment of missile guidance systems
Nonlinear effects for immersion of positive plasma column in longitudinal magnetic field near critical strength, noting occurrence of resonance in received signal
In large aperture telescope primary reflectors, the primary mirror is fixed with respect to the gravity vector to avoid varying gravity deflection problems. The primary reflector does not become distorted in various positions nor in changing positions.

Satellite cosmic ray monitors data, examining corotation with sun to obtain interplanetary magnetic field spatial structure
During relatively quiet times in the period 1964-1968, AE is found to be greater when the interplanetary magnetic field (b sub IMF) is directed toward the sun in Jan., Feb., and Apr., and when B sub IMF is directed away from the sun in Oct. to Dec. Using Murmansk hourly H values and the AE components, AU and AL, it is shown that this sector dependence is present only in the negative H deviations. This observation supports the idea that negative bay magnitudes are determined chiefly by particle-produced ionization, while positive bay magnitudes are rather insensitive to increases in particle precipitation. The ratio of DP2-type magnetic activity in the southern polar cap to that in the northern polar cap is found to be greater by a factor of about 1.75 for B sub IMF toward the sun.
In order to improve the performance capability of the Extendable Stiff Arm Manipulator (ESAM) it was necessary to increase the overall gear ratio by a factor of approximately four. This is accomplished with minimum effect to existing hardware by the interposition of a planetary gear transmission between the respective drive motors and the harmonic drive transmissions. The engineering analysis in support of this design approach and the subsequent no-load test results are reported.
The major conclusions reached by McKibben (1972) in a report of fluxes and spectra of solar flare protons in the approximate energy range from 10 to 30 MeV are reviewed. The observations had been made with cosmic ray telescopes on board the deep space probes Pioneer 6 and Pioneer 7 and the earth satellite Imp 4 during nine solar flare proton events occurring in the period from December 1967 to August 1968. The interpretation of the observations is discussed, giving attention to the stochastic field model of Jokipii and Parker (1969). Aspects of interplanetary diffusion are considered together with observations of corotating events.

The application of the step transform subarray processing techniques to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was studied. The subarray technique permits the application of efficient digital transform computational techniques such as the fast Fourier transform to be applied while offering an effective tool for range migration compensation. Range migration compensation is applied at the subarray level, and with the subarray size based on worst case range migration conditions, a minimum control system is achieved. A baseline processor was designed for a four-look SAR system covering approximately 4096 by 4096 SAR sample field every 2.5 seconds. Implementation of the baseline system was projected using advanced low power technologies. A 20 swath is implemented with approximately 1000 circuits having a power dissipation of from 70 to 195 watts. The baseline batch step transform processor is compared to a continuous strip processor, and variations of the baseline are developed for a wide range of SAR parameters.
The results of analysis of 27 day, annual and quasi-two year variation of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) are presented. The dependence of the periods of 27 day GCR variation on the energy of initial radiation is discovered, according to the data during 1980 of the World network of station in sufficiently wide range of the observed threshold energy. The dependence of the annual variation of GCR is established, according to the data of the Huancayo station in conforming with the change of the polarity of the General Magnetic Field of the Sun (GMFS).

Analysis of the speeds measured by Voyager 1 and 2 while skimming along a horizontal (east-west) portion of the current sheet over several days in 1977 is reported. The results demonstrate that in this case speed variations exist and would be large enough to significantly deform the sheet within a few AU or less if the current sheet were anything but perfectly horizontal. The spatial scale of the speed variation ranges from the smallest measureable scale using one hour averaged data up to tens of degrees in longitude. A deformation example is given under the assumption that the observed velocity variation exists on a current sheet that is initially perpendicular to the heliographic equator.
