Spectrophotometric Attachment for the Vacuum Ultraviolet

An absorption spectrophotometric attachment to a vacuum ultraviolet monochromator has been built and tested. With an empty sample chamber, the ratio of the radiant flux through the sample chamber to the radiant flux through the reference chamber was measured. By optimizing conditions at the entrance slit, the ratio was constant within experimental error over the region 1000-1600 A. The transmittance of thin celluloid films was measured with the attachment.

Macroalgae farming including attaching seaweed to a line

An apparatus for attaching vegetative propagules to a longline that may include a clip portion having a curved area sized to receive a stem of a vegetative propagule and having an opening to the curved area smaller than the curved area to secure the vegetative propagule in the curved area; a tapered barrel that is inserted into a longline; and a rigid connection by a tower between the clip portion and the tapered barrel. Also disclosed is a macroalgae farm including the apparatus for attaching vegetative propagules to a longline.

Method for attaching nanomaterials comprising hexagonal lattices to polymer surfaces

The invention is directed to a method for attaching nanomaterials containing hexagonal lattices to polymer surfaces. For example, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be attached to polycarbonate, polyethylene, or epoxy surfaces by amination of the polymer surface, functionalization of the surfaces of CNTs with ester groups, and reacting the aminated surface of the polymer with the ester groups of the functionalized surfaces of the CNTs in an organic solvent to chemically bind the CNTs to the polymer surface.

Crystallization by Amorphous Particle Attachment: On the Evolution of Texture

Abstract Crystallization by particle attachment (CPA) is a gradual process where each step has its own thermodynamic and kinetic constrains defining a unique pathway of crystal growth. An important example is biomineralization of calcium carbonate through amorphous precursors that are morphed into shapes and textural patterns that cannot be envisioned by the classical monomer‐by‐monomer approach. Here, a mechanistic link between the collective kinetics of mineral deposition and the emergence of crystallographic texture is established. Using the prismatic ultrastructure in bivalve shells as a model, a fundamental leap is made in the ability to analytically describe the evolution of form and texture of biological mineralized tissues and to design the structure and crystallographic properties of synthetic materials formed by CPA.

Clustering and Cliques in Preferential Attachment Random Graphs with Edge Insertion

In this paper, we investigate the global clustering coefficient (a.k.a transitivity) and clique number of graphs generated by a preferential attachment random graph model with an additional feature of allowing edge connections between existing vertices. Specifically, at each time step t, either a new vertex is added with probability f(t), or an edge is added between two existing vertices with probability 1 – f(t). We establish concentration inequalities for the global clustering and clique number of the resulting graphs under the assumption that f(t) is a regularly varying function at infinity with index of regular variation –$\gamma$, where $\gamma$ $\in$ [0, 1). Finally, we also demonstrate an inverse relation between these two statistics: the clique number is essentially the reciprocal of the global clustering coefficient.

Dissociative electron attachment to amide bond containing molecules: N-ethylformamide and N-ethylacetamide

To advance our quest to understand the role of low energy electrons in biomolecular systems, we performed investigations on dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to gas-phase N-ethylformamide (NEF) and N-ethylacetamide (NEA) molecules. Both molecules contain the amide bond, which is the linkage between two consecutive amino acid residues in proteins. Thus, their electron-induced dissociation can imitate the resonant behavior of the DEA process in more complex biostructures. Our experimental results indicate that in these two molecules, the dissociation of the amide bond results in a double resonant structure with peaks at ~5 eV and 9 eV. We also determined the energy position of resonant states for several negative ions, i.e., the other dissociation products from NEF and NEA. Our predictions of dissociation channels were supported by density functional theory calculations of the corresponding threshold energies. Our results and those previously reported for small amides and peptides imply the fundamental nature for breakage of the amide bond through the DEA process.

Dynamics of hydride anion and acetyloxyl radical production by electron attachment to acetic acid

Here, we investigate the dynamics and site-selectivity in the dissociation of transient anions formed upon attachment of low energy electrons to acetic acid by anion fragment momentum imaging experiments. The resonances at 6.7 and 7.7 eV are confirmed to dissociate exclusively by the O–H bond, while a third resonance at 9.1 eV dissociates primarily by both C–H break and O–H break. A fourth resonance near 10 eV is found to dissociate by O–H break. For each resonance, the measured kinetic energy release indicates two-body dissociation produces a neutral radical in the ground electronic state, for all four resonances. The measured angular distributions are consistent with all four resonances having A' symmetry.

Generating Massive Scale-free Networks: Novel Parallel Algorithms using the Preferential Attachment Model

Recently, there has been substantial interest in the study of various random networks as mathematical models of complex systems. As real-life complex systems grow larger, the ability to generate progressively large random networks becomes all the more important. This motivates the need for efficient parallel algorithms for generating such networks. Naïve parallelization of sequential algorithms for generating random networks is inefficient due to inherent dependencies among the edges and the possibility of creating duplicate (parallel) edges. In this article, we present message passing interface-based distributed memory parallel algorithms for generating random scale-free networks using the preferential-attachment model. Our algorithms are experimentally verified to scale very well to a large number of processing elements (PEs), providing near-linear speedups. The algorithms have been exercised with regard to scale and speed to generate scale-free networks with one trillion edges in 6 minutes using 1,000 PEs.

Studying Corrosion Using Miniaturized Particle Attached Working Electrodes and the Nafion Membrane

We developed a new approach to attach particles onto a conductive layer as a working electrode (WE) in a microfluidic electrochemical cell with three electrodes. Nafion, an efficient proton transfer molecule, is used to form a thin protection layer to secure particle electrodes. Spin coating is used to develop a thin and even layer of Nafion membrane. The effects of Nafion (5 wt% 20 wt%) and spinning rates were evaluated using multiple sets of replicates. The electrochemical performance of various devices was demonstrated. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of the devices is used to select and optimize fabrication conditions. The results show that a higher spinning rate and a lower Nafion concentration (5 wt%) induce a better performance, using cerium oxide (CeO2) particles as a testing model. The WE surfaces were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy-focused ion beam (SEM-FIB), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The comparison between the pristine and corroded WE surfaces shows that Nafion is redistributed after potential is applied. Our results verify that Nafion membrane offers a reliable means to secure particles onto electrodes. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance is reliable and reproducible. Thus, this approach provides a new way to study more complex and challenging particles, such as uranium oxide, in the future.
