Coherent homodyne detection for amplified cross-beam electric-field induced second harmonic

The electric-field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) signal sensing is commonly used as a nonlinear optical technique to probe electric fields inside a plasma region. Cross-beam E-FISH is being investigated to improve spatial resolution by defining the interaction volume via a controlled geometry of two overlapping noncolinear optical beams. This drastic reduction in interaction length of the electric field and laser region results in a significant signal reduction. Here, to overcome this signal reduction, we introduce coherent amplification of the cross-beam E-FISH signal by mixing the low E-FISH signal with a phase-locked bright local oscillator. We demonstrate enhancement of the signal. By introducing a local oscillator we can now derive the polarity of the measured electric field through the phase of the homodyne signal. To illustrate the technique, we, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, measure the magnitude and the direction of the electric field in a cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet, which dynamically follows the profile of the applied bias current.

On-chip non-Hermitian optical parametric amplifiers with a large bandwidth

Recently, our groups have introduced the notion of optical parametric amplification based on non-Hermitian phase matching wherein the incorporation of loss can lead to gain in this nonlinear optical process. Previous simulation results using second-order nonlinear optical coupled-mode theory have demonstrated the potential of this technique as an alternative to the stringent phase-matching condition, which is often difficult to achieve in semiconductor platforms. Here we fortify this notion for the case of third-order nonlinearity by considering parametric amplification in silicon nanowires and illustrate the feasibility of these devices by employing rigorous finite-difference time-domain analysis using realistic materials and geometric parameters. Particularly, we demonstrate that by systematic control of the optical loss of the idler in a four-wave mixing process, we can achieve efficient unidirectional energy conversion from the pump to the signal component even when the typical phase-matching condition is violated. Importantly, our simulations show that a signal gain of ∼ <#comment/> 9 d B for a waveguide length of a few millimeters is possible over a large bandwidth of several hundreds of nanometers ( ∼ <#comment/> 600 n m ). This bandwidth is nearly 2 orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved in the conventional silicon-photonics-based four-wave mixing process.

Warming amplifies the variability of methane emissions from a coastal wetland, 2025, Maryland.

These data accompany the published paper Lewis et al., 202X and are from a brackish coastal wetland in situ soil warming experiment (GENX) equipped with automated flux chambers. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were measured in 12 automated chambers using custom-built automated chambers connected to an LI-7810 CH4/CO2 analyzer. The chambers are 1.5 m tall and contain the dominant vegetation species of the site (Schoenoplectus americanus, Spartina patens, and Distichlis spicata). The chambers are also distributed across a soil warming gradient, ranging from ambient to 6°C above ambient, that was started in February 2022. This dataset contains the following files: (1) CH4 and CO2 fluxes from each chamber for March to November 2025, statistics for each flux, and environmental data (water depth, salinity, air temperature) at the time of the flux measurement; (2) 15-minute soil temperature data for each chamber; (3) Aboveground vegetation biomass (total and by species) and stem counts and dimensions for S. americanus; (4) Elevation for each chamber. All data processing code is available on Github.

Predicted third-order sweet spots for phi-junction Josephson parametric amplifiers

Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire Josephson junctions exhibit skewed and phi-shifted current phase relations when an in-plane magnetic field is applied along the weak link's spin-orbit effective field direction. These junctions can have an asymmetric Josephson potential with odd-order nonlinearities. A dominant third-order nonlinearity can be achieved by tuning the magnetic field to a sweet spot. Sweet spots persist when higher order Josephson harmonics are included. This makes it possible to have a single Josephson junction dipole element with three-wave mixing capability, which is favorable for pump-efficient amplification. Electrostatic gate tunability of the semiconductor weak link can make it operable within an extended range of working frequencies, and the inclusion of micromagnets can facilitate near-zero magnetic field operation.

CHEETAH: Compact High Efficiency Electrically Tunable Amplifier (Final Report)

The goal of this project was to develop a new type of optically triggered, high speed and high power switch for radiofrequency applications with potential to exceed current state-of-the-art power and bandwidth. This device operates under a new operation principle, where discrete packets of charge carriers are generated with defined size. These are then swept out of the device at high enough fields to prevent diffusion and expansion of these packets. Individual pulse widths are determined by the spatial extent of these packets and their drift velocity, which would enable control over both amplitude and frequency by control of the initial packet size, illumination intensity, and applied voltage. This effort demonstrated this new mode of operation, while uncovering a new regime of pulse compression using negative differential mobility (NDM) semiconductors such as GaAs, where the output electrical pulse is substantially shorter than the input optical pulse.

Spectral and Spatial Properties of Amplified Radiation in High Gain Tapering Enhanced Stimulated Super-radiant Amplification Regime (Technical Report)

There is a wide convergence of scientific and industrial interests in understanding the physics of high efficiency conversion of relativistic electron beam power into coherent radiation. Improved understanding would open the door to ultrahigh intensity X-ray laser pulses (single shot coherent imaging and Schwingerfield physics), as well as at longer wavelength for fast throughput material processing (EUV-lithography). Modern particle accelerators can be extremely efficient (approaching 50 %) in terms of wall-plug energy use. State-of-the-art light sources on the other hand do not take advantage of all the available power and most of it is left in the beam and simply wasted on the beam dump. This proposal aimed at developing a program based on Tapered Enhanced Stimulated Superradiant Amplification to address the current limitation in electron-based coherent radiation generation exploiting the progress in high brightness beam generation and strong coupling with the electromagnetic field in a strongly tapered undulator system.
