The line strength variations of the resonance line of C IV (1550A, 2s 2S - 2P) observed by OAO-2 were confirmed by IUE observations. In addition, the NV resonance line (1204A, 2s 2S - 2P), the Si III line (1206A, 3p 1P-1D, multiplet 11) and the Si IV resonance line (1395A, 3s 2S - 2P) all vary in line strength essentially in phase with the C IV variation. The (preliminary) period of the variation is 6.02/12.04 days.
Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), nuclear explosions, lightning, solar proton events (SPEs), relativistic electron precipitation, and meteors are related to the oxidation of nitrous oxide by comparing several sources of odd nitrogen (ON) in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Published O3 and N2O data show that ON produced by the reaction of O(1D) with N2O peaks between 25 and 35 km; the GCRs add approximately the same amount of ON as N2O oxidation at the solar minimum for geographic latitudes over 50 deg. Nuclear explosions in 1961-1962 added 1.1 and 2.2 x 10 to the 34th NO molecules each, and SPEs produced greater amounts of ON above 50 deg than N2O oxidation during 1958 through 1960, and in 1972.
Results from ultraviolet spectrographic observations of Comet West (1975n) in the 1620-3960 A wavelength range are presented. Objective grating imagery of the comet reveals for the first time emission from sulfur atoms and CS molecules as well as previously observed lines or bands in carbon atoms and CO(+), CO2(+) and OH molecules. Some evidence exists for emission in the C2 Mulliken bands and in the CO Cameron bands. On the basis of the observations, production rates of C (ground state), C(1D), S, and CS are inferred to be 3.8 x 10 to the 29th per sec, 4.4 x 10 to the 29th per sec, 1.7 x 10 to the 28th per sec, and greater than approximately 3.1 x 10 to the 27th per sec, respectively.
Evidence is presented that some previous studies of reactions of O(2+) ions with various atoms and molecules referred to ion samples composed in part of ions in metastable (1D and/or 1S) states. This finding resolves the 3 orders of magnitude discrepancy between previous experimental and calculated rate coefficients for the O(2+)(3P) + He charge transfer process. Using a drift tube to distinguish, via arrival time differences, groundstate O(+)(3P) and metastable ions, a rate coefficient of (3.5 plus or minus 1.5) x 10 to the -11th cu cm/sec is obtained for the reaction, in good agreement with that obtained from ab initio theoretical calculations. Previous conclusions concerning reactions of O(2+) with O2 and N2, however, remain valid since the difference in reactivity of ground-state and metastable O(2+) ions appears to be negligible in this case. The rate coefficient for the reaction O(2+) + CO2 has been determined to be (2 plus or minus 0.5) x 10 to the -9th cu cm/sec for ions either in the ground-state or in metastable states.
Consideration is given to the possibility that internally excited ozone formed in the three-body recombination reaction between oxygen atoms and molecules may be a potential source of atmospheric N2O through a gas-phase reaction with nitrogen molecules. Determinations of the wavelength dependence of the quantum yield for N2O formation from the photolysis of dilute solutions of O3 in liquid N2 and of the O(1D) quantum yield in the gas-phase photolysis of O3 are interpreted as suggesting the possibility of the excited ozone reaction, and a new expression for N2O quantum yield is derived. An expression for the production rate of N2O through the proposed reaction is then obtained and used to calculate atmospheric concentrations and fluxes of N2O. The theoretical profile obtained is found to agree better with experimental data than that obtained without the excited ozone reaction taken into account and to demonstrate a wide variability in N2O mixing ratios. In addition, the existence of the new N2O source is noted to imply a significantly smaller flux of N2O from surface microbiological activities, and provide a possible physical basis for latitudinal and temporal N2O variations and an additional stability for the ozone layer.
Theoretical calculations are presented which estimate the possible magnitude of the O3/H2O derived OH interference signal resulting from the use of the laser-induced fluorescence technique in measuring natural levels of tropospheric OH. Critical to this new assessment has been the measurement of the nascent OH quantum state distribution resulting from the reaction O(1D) + H2O yields 2OH, and an assessment of the subsequent rotational relaxation of the OH species when formed in high k levels.
Measurements are reported of the 5755-A emission arising from the transition N(+)(1D-1S) made at Sutherland, South Africa (32.4 deg S, 20.8 deg E). The surface brightness of the emission in mid-November 1977 decayed from approximately 5 R at 10 solar depression angle (SDA) to approximately 1 R at 15 deg SDA. By the use of these data, it has been determined that less than 5% of all N2 ionizations result in the production of N(+) ions in the 1S state. Quenching of N(+)(1S) by neutral constituents and electrons is found to be negligible above 220 km in the twilight thermosphere in November and December 1977. Measurements of the 5755-A emission therefore potentially provide a ground based means of measuring the N2 density in the twilight thermosphere.
The tests were performed with the helicopters BO 105 and UH-1D. Closely connected with tactical demands the six test pilots' task was to minimize the time and the altitude over the obstacles. The data reduction yields statistical evaluation parameters describing the control activity of the pilots and the achieved task performance. The results are shown in form of evaluation diagrams. Additionally dolphin tests with varied control strategy were performed to get more insight into the influence of control techniques. From these test results recommendations can be derived to emphasize the direct force control and to reduce the collective to pitch crosscoupling for the dolphin.
Thermal and nonthermal O(1D) number density profiles are calculated. The two populations are assumed to be coupled by a thermalization cross-section which determines the loss and production in the nonthermal and thermal populations, respectively. The sources, sinks and transport of the two populations are used to model volume emission rate profiles at 6300 A. The 6300 A brightness measured by the Visible Airglow Experiment is then used to establish the presence of the nonthermal population and to determine the thermalization cross-section.
The Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) on Dynamics Explorer is a remote sensing instrument designed to measure the temperature, meridional wind and density of the metastable atoms O(1S) and O(1D), and the ion O(plus)(2P) in the thermosphere. The measurements are made with a stable, high resolution Fabry-Perot etalon, which performs a wavelength analysis on the light detected from the thermospheric emission features by spatially scanning the interference fringe plane with a multichannel array detector. The wavelength analysis characterizes the Doppler line profile of the emitting species. A sequential altitude scan, performed by a commandable horizon scan mirror, provides a cross-sectional view of the thermodynamic and dynamic state of the thermosphere below the orbit of the Dynamics Explorer B satellite.
A 1d unmagnetized double layer simulation is presented along with analytic considerations of the Langmuir-Bohm criterion for double layer formation. It is found that this requirement of large electron drift is not reduced by trapped thermal electron and ion populations; the assumption of a nonthermal population which requires the preexistence of the double layer cannot reduce the required electron drift. It is noted that negative charge density spikes and holes in ion phase space accompany the double layer. A magnetized BGK mode solution to Poisson's equation for the potential profile perpendicular to B for cold counter-streaming electrons and ions shows how the spatial structure changes in a magnetized plasma.
Simultaneous radio and optical diagnostics of a large, artificially-induced ionospheric modification were conducted during the June 1981 launch of a weather satellite. Intensified imaging and photometer observations at 6300 A, along the same ray path as VHF polarimeter measurements of the ionosphere's total electron content (TEC), were made while the rocket plume caused disturbances. A rapid TEC chemical depletion, on the order of -16.8 x 10 to the 12th el/sq cm, caused a burst of 6300 A radiation which expanded over 60 deg of the sky, with a peak intensity of almost 9 k R. Atmospheric diffusion and O(1D) quenching rate theoretical estimates were then tested, using the event as an active space plasma experiment.
The present study is believed to be the first investigation which combines a detailed tropospheric photochemical model with a radiative code that realistically considers the important physical processes in the cloudless troposphere which control the transfer of incoming solar radiation. It is found in most cases that the inclusion of the multiple scattering code significantly alters the photolytic reaction frequencies. This in turn alters the vertical distribution of some key tropospheric species. In the case of ozone a decrease was found, while O(1D) and OH showed increased concentrations. The increases are especially evident for the species which are highly dependent on photolysis processes that occur shortward of about 320 nm. The photolysis frequencies for ozone photolysis calculated with the Anderson-Meier model are in general in excellent agreement with recent measurements
The two-population model of Schmitt, Abreu and Hays (1981) is used to calculate the line shape of the atomic oxygen metastable state, nonthermal O(1D) 6300 A emission, in order to simulate observations made from a space platform at different zenith angles and altitudes. The Addition theorem, for spherical harmonics of a Legendre polynomial expansion of the nonthermal population distribution function, is used to obtain nonthermal line shapes observed at zenith angles other than the local vertical one.
Possibilities for experimental investigations related to the study of the dynamics of the thermosphere have been markedly improved by the new instrumentation deployed on the Dynamics Explorer Satellite (DE). The Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) on DE measures altitude profiles of the meridional component of the neutral wind below the spacecraft by remotely sensing the Doppler shift of the thermospheric O(1D). The Wind and Temperature Spectrometer (WATS) measures the in situ zonal component of the neutral wind by measuring the angle of arrival of the beam of neutral atoms entering the aperture to a mass spectrometer. A description is provided of data handling procedures, and the first results obtained by combining the data sets from the two instruments are presented. Acquisition and determination of neutral wind vectors from the remote (FPI) and in-situ (WATS) measurements requires careful handling of the data to ensure that the two components relate to the same volume of space.
The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the measurements of the stable auroral red (SAR) arc of October 23, 1981, using data from orbit 1192 of Dynamics Explorer (DE) 2, during which a magnetic coincidence occurred with the DE-1 spacecraft near the red arc field line, and for which simultaneous ground-based intensity measurements from Richland, WA were available. The altitude of the DE-2 satellite was approximately 850 km during arc passage in the Northern Hemisphere and approximately 395 km during the conjugate hemisphere passage. The DE-1 satellite was at an altitude of approximately 6000 km during the magnetic coincidence with DE-2 in the Northern Hemisphere. The described observations and calculations reconfirm a previous understanding that the actual excitation of the O(1D) state responsible for the 6300 A emission of red arcs is caused by hot ionospheric thermal electrons.
A bump-on-tail unstable reduced velocity distribution, constructed from data obtained at the upstream boundary of the electron foreshock by the GSFC electron spectrometer experiment on the ISEE-1 satellite, is used as the initial plasma state for a numerical integration of the 1D-Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations. The integration is carried through the growth of the instability, beyond its saturation, and well into the stabilized plasma regime. A power spectrum computed for the electric field of the stabilized plasma is dominated by a narrow peak at the Bohm-Gross frequency of the unstable field mode but also contains significant power at the harmonics of the Bohm-Gross frequency. The harmonic power is in sharp peaks which are split into closely spaced doublets. The fundamental peak at the Bohm-Gross frequency is split into a closely spaced triplet. The mechanism for excitation of the second harmonic is shown to be second order wave-wave coupling.
The phosphine photochemistry on Saturn is studied with a 1D photochemical model. The PH3 concentration is rapidly depleted with height (scale height 3.5 km) in the upper troposphere. Formation of P, a probable precursor of P4, (a potential red chromophore in the atmosphere), is highly improbable unless the rate constant for the recombination reaction PH + H2 + M yields PH3 + M is less than 10 to the -41st cm exp 6/molecule-squared sec. Coupling of PH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH, is important. Column production rates of the organophosphorus compounds CH3PH2 and HCP of 3 x 10 to the 8th/sq cm sec are predicted, with potentially observable column densities of greater than 1 x 10 to the 17th/sq cm.
