ComStock Measure Scenario Documentation: Standard Performance Heat Pump Rooftop Unit With New Windows

Building on a 3-year effort to calibrate and validate the U.S. Department of Energy's ResStock (TM) and ComStock (TM) models, this work produces national datasets that empower analysts working for federal, state, utility, city, and manufacturer stakeholders to answer a broad range of questions regarding their commercial building stock. ComStock is a highly granular, bottom-up model that uses multiple data sources, statistical sampling methods, and advanced building energy simulations to estimate the annual energy consumption (at subhourly resolution) of the commercial building stock across the United States. The baseline model intends to represent the U.S. commercial building stock as it existed in 2018. The methodology and results of the baseline model are discussed in the final technical report of the End-Use Load Profiles project. The goal of this work is to develop energy efficiency and demand flexibility end-use load shapes that cover high-impact, market-ready (or nearly market-ready) measures. "Measures" refers to various "what-if" scenarios that can be applied to buildings. An end-use savings shape is the difference in energy consumption between a baseline building (or collection of buildings) and a building with an energy efficiency or demand flexibility measure applied. It results in a time-series profile broken down by end use and fuel (electricity or on-site gas, propane, or fuel oil use) at each time step, as well as annual aggregations.

Screening of alkali-assisted storage conditions to define the operational window of deacetylation within storage systems in the bioenergy supply chain

Overcoming biomass heterogeneity and associated recalcitrance to thermal, chemical, and enzymatic depolymerization is a necessary but challenging aspect of valorizing lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals. Here, this study explores how this recalcitrance can be reduced during the supply chain unit operation of storage, which is required for seasonally harvested agricultural residues to maintain constant throughput at a biorefinery. In this work, partial alkali pretreatment was performed just prior to corn stover entering storage, which had the benefit of providing a high pH environment entering storage such that soluble sugars were preserved and saponified acetyl groups in hemicellulose. This work investigated a range of viable conditions where saponification and preservation occur simultaneously by varying the moisture content (40% and 60%) and concentrations of sodium hydroxide (low and high) during aerobic and anaerobic storage. Anaerobic conditions preserved overall dry matter below 5% in the three scenarios evaluated, and the highest alkali loading solubilized up to 15% lignin, 18% xylan, and 50% of acetate, meanwhile doubling the extractable components. Scanning electron microscopy images highlighted potential physical impacts including cell-wall disruption near vascular bundles, pitting within parenchyma cells, and cell-wall distortion. Techno-economic assessment indicated that this storage approach and associated logistics system is economically competitive with a conventional approach using low-moisture bales.

Strain–Activated Stimulated Emission from Multilayer MoSe 2 in a Narrow Operation Window

Herein, photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) in multilayer MoSe 2 are studied. Strain-activated stimulated emission via defect levels in multilayer MoSe 2 under laser excitation is observed, for the first time in defects of transition metal dichalcogenides. The stimulated emission is indicated by a threshold behavior of PL emission intensity with respect to laser intensity, strong polarization effects, achieved population inversion with a difference in lifetimes of two competing excited states, and localization of the stimulated emission zone as observed in FLIM. Here, the presented results not only demonstrate strain-activated stimulated emission and highlight the necessity of strain engineering in tailoring 2D layered materials for optoelectronic applications, but also shed light on the design of stimulated emission in transition metal dichalcogenide's defects to tailor for potential single-photon emission behavior.

Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells Achieved via Rapid Photonic Annealing of all Stacking Layers: Unveiling the Crystallization Energy Window

In this study, we report high-performance perovksite solar cells (PSCs) with rapid photonic annealing (RPA) of all stacking layers, enabled by ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diode (LED) sources, to replace lengthy and energy-intensive thermal annealing (TA). The UV-LED annealing technique allows for layer-specific annealing, where the selected light source provides a precise UV wavelength for maximizing the amount of light absorption by the target layer. The disparity in optical absorption between the target layer and the underlying films allows the stack of the underlying films to remain relatively unaffected, making this process ideal for heating sensitive substrates. Along with a systematic investigation into the layer-specific annealing mechanism of RPA, the results demonstrated that this UV-LED-based photonic annealing of all stacking layers (7 s for perovskite absorber) can produce PSCs with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 23%, the highest reported among optically annealed PSCs. Moreover, the RPA device retains over 80% of the initial PCE over 1000 h under continuous 1 sun illumination at 55 °C and 30%–60% relative humidity (RH), while TA control device drops to 50% of its initial efficiency. Furthermore, these findings represent significant strides toward achieving rapid, cost-effective, and scalable manufacturing of commercial perovskite photovoltaics (PV).

Earliest Traces of Life as a Window on Life's Origins

Life is the outcome of a complex network of chemical reactions and mo-lecular interactions that emerged on Earth once primitive chemical automata could self-assemble in such a way that enabled them to self-reproduce and evolve. Yet exactly how, where and when life first appeared on our planet remains unknown. Various lines of evidence from fossilized traces of early life preserved in the geological record provide fundamental, albeit often rudimentary, insight into early life. The oldest fossils record the nature of life more than half a billion years after it emerged on Earth and suggest that considerable metabolic diversity had already evolved by this time. Microfossils, microbial mats, stromatolites and organic and inorganic geochemical signatures have been interpreted as compelling evidence for Archean biodiversity. In spite of the chemical enigmas of the earliest life and its limited record, characterization of the various classes of biosignatures indicative of life in its geological context provides guidance as to the earliest co-evolution of the geosphere and biosphere.

A window into atmospheric escape on early Mars provided by argon isotopes in a Martian meteorite

Novel analytical approaches to determining the trapped 38 Ar/ 36 Ar ratio of gases contained within Martian meteorites are presented and applied to the Martian regolith breccia Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034 and paired stone NWA 11220. The resulting data indicate that extensive mass-dependent fractionation of atmospheric Ar may have occurred within 150 million years of planetary formation, ostensibly as a result of diffusion-limited hydrodynamic escape. The inferred fractional loss of Ar and lighter atmospheric constituents exceeds 50%. In conclusion, these data suggest that volatiles derived from planetary outgassing and/or impactors may dominate the present abundance of atmospheric Ar.
