Multiple docking adapter window for the S-190 experiment

Martin Marietta/NASA subcontracted the design, fabrication, testing, and installation of the multiple docking adapter S-190 experiment window assembly to Actron. In this paper, we primarily treat the thermal-optical analysis aspect of the design phase. The window is a pane of BK 7 glass 59.18 cm by 44.91 cm by 4.06 cm. Though it must meet many mechanical specifications, the optical requirements, dictated by the high acuity, distortion-free S-190 multiband camera system, are the most severe. Under operating conditions over any 7.6-cm circular area, the maximum rms deviation from the best-fitting plane must be less than 12.0 nm, and from the reference plane through the entire window, 60.0 nm.

Thermoelastic analysis of solar window of a vacuum chamber

It has been noted during space simulation test programs that the chamber penetration window becomes the limiting factor as the solar intensity increases. The temperature at the center of the window normally attains a level of 550 C, while the edge temperature remains at about 35 C. The stresses produced by this thermal gradient combined with the atmospheric pressure are studied within the framework of classical theory of elasticity. The solution for the problem is obtained by solving the static uncoupled thermoelastic equations for a circular blank, subjected to nonuniform heat on one face, by introduction of two auxiliary variables. The displacements are expressed in terms of Bessel functions and parameters of interest are computed at various mesh points of the window. The maximum principal stresses thus obtained show that even with steep temperature gradient, the safety factor is acceptable.

WINDOW: A computer program for planning astronomical observations

A FORTRAN computer program called WINDOW was written to simplify the planning of astronomical observations of a number of objects in a limited time. The program lists the azimuths at 15 minute intervals of up to 20 objects while they are in a given range of elevation angles - the window - and gives the elevation angle of each object at its time of transit. This work was motivated by the need to use observing time efficiently on flights of NASA-Ames' Lear Jet and C-141 observatories; WINDOW permits the investigator to prepare preliminary flight plans. However, the program is suited to planning ground-based observations as well. The program and a sample flight plan are described.

Determination of strains in optical windows of a high-pressure chamber by holographic interferometry and finite element analysis

Holographic interferometry and finite element analysis have been applied to determine the strain in a large optical window installed in a high-pressure chamber. Two different shapes of windows were chosen, and the outside and inside surface strains of the windows were followed as a function of internal pressure by taking double exposed holograms at 69-bar intervals up to 483 bars. The results were compared with the values calculated by a standard finite element code with an assumption of no displacement at the load-bearing edge. The agreement between two results was found to be good for both cases.

Holography through optically active windows

By using two orthogonally polarized reference beams, holograms can be recorded through stressed windows and the reconstructed virtual image will show no stress pattern. As shown analytically, the stress-pattern-free hologram is recordable for any polarization state of the object illumination. Hence, the more efficient nondepolarizing diffuser can be used in performing holography through stressed windows if two reference beams are used. Results are presented for a pair of machined polysulfone windows intended for use in a holographic flow-visualization setup in a single-stage-compressor test rig.

Noise reduction characteristics of general aviation type dual-pane windows

The noise reduction characteristics of general-aviation-type, dual-pane windows in various configurations have been experimentally investigated. The effects of inner and outer pane thickness, spacing between the panes, edge conditions, inclination of the inner pane and depressurization of the air in between the panes are presented. The space in between the two window panes is sealed airtight in all cases. Results show that increasing the mass of a 'floating' window pane does not increase the noise reduction below the fundamental resonance frequency. It is concluded that the concept of depressurization of the air between thin (1/8 in) Plexiglas panes and application of multiple-freedom edge conditions for the inner pane are promising to reduce noise levels in general aviation airplanes.

Water vapor resistance of plasma-polymerized coatings on potassium bromide windows

Plasma-polymerized tetrafluoroethylene (PPTFE) coated potassium bromide IR window are shown to possess better resistance to moisture than either ethylene or chlorotrifluoroethylene. The PPTFE-coated windows tolerated an upper limit relative humidity of about 80% at 297 K, without visible damage to either window or coating, over a period of 24 hours. Elemental analysis of the bulk, and photoelectron spectroscopy of the coating surface, showed that PPTFE coatings deposited downstream of the internal plasma reactor electrodes contained less atmospheric oxygen than coatings deposited between the electrodes; perhaps accounting for the improved moisture resistance.

Optimized retrievals of precipitable water from the VAS 'split window'

Precipitable water fields have been retrieved from the VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) using a radiation transfer model for the differential water vapor absorption between the 11- and 12-micron 'split window' channels. Previous moisture retrievals using only the split window channels provided very good space-time continuity but poor absolute accuracy. This note describes how retrieval errors can be significantly reduced from plus or minus 0.9 to plus or minus 0.6 gm/sq cm by empirically optimizing the effective air temperature and absorption coefficients used in the two-channel model. The differential absorption between the VAS 11- and 12-micron channels, empirically estimated from 135 colocated VAS-RAOB observations, is found to be approximately 50 percent smaller than the theoretical estimates. Similar discrepancies have been noted previously between theoretical and empirical absorption coefficients applied to the retrieval of sea surface temperatures using radiances observed by VAS and polar-orbiting satellites. These discrepancies indicate that radiation transfer models for the 11-micron window appear to be less accurate than the satellite observations.

Use of model-based qualitative icons and adaptive windows in workstations for supervisory control systems

The effectiveness of an operator interface using qualitative icons and dynamic windows designed and controlled by means of an operator function model is demonstrated, and the simulation system, the Georgia Tech-Multisatellite Operations Control Center, is described. Qualitative icons are used to integrate low-level quantitative data into high-level qualitative error detection mechanisms, and window technology is used for the simultaneous display of multiple data sources that reflect different aspects of the system state. Based on eleven experimental measures, the workstation incorporating the model-based qualitative icons and dynamic operator function window sets was found to perform better than the conventional workstation.

Zoom lens compensator for a cylindrical window in laser anemometer uses

In laser anemometer systems, the flow fields under study are typically enclosed by a window. Aberration of a flat window can be corrected by a shift of the object distance. A zooming correction lens elimates the astigmatism caused by a thick cylindrical window and yields diffraction-limited performance for a monochromatic laser anemometer system. The effects of residual anamorphic distortion are discussed, and procedures for correcting these effects are presented.

Response of spacecraft window materials to hypervelocity projectile impact

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the response of window materials to hypervelocity projectile impact. Window impact damage is characterized according to the nature and extent of surface and internal damage. Analysis of the test data indicates that, for single-pane specimens, the extent of the damage to the test specimens can be written as functions of the impact parameters of the original projectile and the geometric and material properties of the projectile/ window system. These functions can be used to perform parameter-sensitivity studies and to evaluate hypothetical design applications and configurations.

Single-agent parallel window search

Parallel window search is applied to single-agent problems by having different processes simultaneously perform iterations of Iterative-Deepening-A(asterisk) (IDA-asterisk) on the same problem but with different cost thresholds. This approach is limited by the time to perform the goal iteration. To overcome this disadvantage, the authors consider node ordering. They discuss how global node ordering by minimum h among nodes with equal f = g + h values can reduce the time complexity of serial IDA-asterisk by reducing the time to perform the iterations prior to the goal iteration. Finally, the two ideas of parallel window search and node ordering are combined to eliminate the weaknesses of each approach while retaining the strengths. The resulting approach, called simply parallel window search, can be used to find a near-optimal solution quickly, improve the solution until it is optimal, and then finally guarantee optimality, depending on the amount of time available.

Optimal spectral windows for microwave diversity imaging

Tomographic microwave diversity imaging is analyzed using linear system theory concepts, and optimal spectral windows for data acquisition are obtained either by considering window position in the spectral domain or by using simulated annealing to find an optimal phase weighting of the object frequency response samples collected over the specified spectral window. This study provides a means of microwave image formation that is applicable under general assumptions. Results of numerical simulations and representative images reconstructed from realistic experimental microwave scattering data are given, demonstrating that the proposed approach is superior to previous image reconstruction methods.

Effect of InAlAs window layer on efficiency of indium phosphide solar cells

Indium phosphide (InP) solar cell efficiencies are limited by surface recombination. The effect of a wide bandgap, lattice-matched indium aluminum arsenide (In(0.52)Al(0.48)As) window layer on the performance of InP solar cells was investigated by using the numerical code PC-1D. The p(+)n InP solar cell performance improved significantly with the use of the window layer. No improvement was seen for the n(+)p InP cells. The cell results were explained by the band diagram of the heterostructure and the conduction band energy discontinuity. The calculated current voltage and internal quantum efficiency results clearly demonstrated that In(0.52)Al(0.48)As is a very promising candidate for a window layer material for p(+)n InP solar cells.
