In Crystallo Photochemistry: Reimagining Synthetic Tractability with Transparent Single-Crystalline Flasks

Expanding the boundaries of synthetic tractability of what molecules can be synthesized and isolated is an eternal challenge for synthetic chemists. The development of new synthetic methods and strategies enables the properties and potential functions of novel molecular targets to be experimentally evaluated. In the context of catalysis, predictable synthetic strategies are often available to access kinetically persistent intermediates such as catalyst resting states. In contrast, synthesis and characterization of the reactive intermediates are often not possible due to the fleeting lifetimes of these species. In crystallo photochemistry combines single-crystal matrix isolation with cryogenic photochemistry to enable reactive intermediates to be synthesized under conditions in which they are persistent and can be (crystallographically) characterized. This Outlook highlights key achievements of in crystallo photochemistry as well as discusses opportunities and challenges that confront realization of the potential of in crystallo synthesis to redefine the boundaries of synthetic tractability.

Boosting RDataFrame performance with transparent bulk event processing

RDataFrame is ROOT’s high-level interface for Python and C++ data analysis. Since it first became available, RDataFrame adoption has grown steadily and it is now poised to be a major component of analysis software pipelines for LHC Run 3 and beyond. Thanks to its design inspired by declarative programming principles, RDataFrame enables the development of highperformance, highly parallel analyses without requiring expert knowledge of multi-threading and I/O: user logic is expressed in terms of self-contained, small computation kernels tied together by a high-level API. This design completely decouples analysis logic from its actual execution, and opens several interesting avenues for workflow optimization. In particular, in this work we explore the benefits of moving internal data processing from an event-by-event to a bulkby-bulk loop. This refactoring dramatically reduces the framework’s runtime overheads; in collaboration with the I/O layer it improves data access patterns; it exposes information that optimizing compilers might use to auto-vectorize the invocation of user-defined computations; finally, while existing user-facing interfaces remain unaffected, it becomes possible to additionally offer interfaces that explicitly expose bulks of events, useful e.g. for the injection of GPU kernels into the analysis workflow. In order to inform similar future R&D, design challenges will be presented, as well as an investigation of the relevant timememory trade-off backed by novel performance benchmarks.

Electron cyclotron emission measurements and modeling in optically semi-transparent plasma on the HSX stellarator

On the Helically Symmetric Experiment (HSX), electron cyclotron emission (ECE) at the second harmonic of the electron gyrofrequency is measured with a 16-channel heterodyne receiver. An ECE radiometer diagnostic has been calibrated with a broadband frequency source, allowing independent measurements of the electron temperature. The antenna pattern has a significant impact on the measurements, and modeling its effect is necessary to produce an ECE radiation temperature spectrum. Measurements, calibration results, and modeling of the ECE data are presented in this paper. At a relatively high plasma density, HSX plasmas are thermal, and the radiation temperature measured by the radiometer is in good agreement with the electron temperature measured by a Thomson scattering diagnostic. At a relatively low plasma density, the deviation from a Maxwellian distribution is large, and asymmetry in the radiation temperature profile is measured. These measurements are supported by single-pass and multi-pass ray tracing calculations of the electron cyclotron emission using the TRAVIS ray tracing code. Thermal and nonthermal electron populations exist in HSX, and the effect of these populations on the asymmetry in the measured emission is presented.

Simulation of femtosecond interferometry when studying the effect of intense laser irradiation of a transparent medium

A method for comparing experimental and simulation results obtained when transmitting a femtosecond laser pulse through a material is proposed. This method is based on computer reproduction of photographs recorded using femtosecond interferometry. A numerical analysis of the spatial and temporal evolution of an intense (∼10{sup 13} W cm{sup −2}) pulse propagating in the bulk of yttrium aluminium garnet is presented. (paper)

Single-beam ion source enhanced growth of transparent conductive thin films

A single-beam ion source was developed and used in combination with magnetron sputtering to modulate the film microstructure. The ion source emits a single beam of ions that interact with the deposited film and simultaneously enhances the magnetron discharge. The magnetron voltage can be adjusted over a wide range, from approximately 240 to 130 V, as the voltage of the ion source varies from 0 to 150 V, while the magnetron current increases accordingly. The low-voltage high-current magnetron discharge enables a 'soft sputtering mode', which is beneficial for thin-film growth. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited at room temperature using a combined single-beam ion source and magnetron sputtering. Furthermore, the ion beam resulted in the formation of polycrystalline ITO thin films with significantly reduced resistivity and surface roughness. Single-beam ion-source-enhanced magnetron sputtering has many potential applications in which low-temperature growth of thin films is required, such as coatings for organic solar cells.

Highly Accelerated UV Stress Testing for Transparent Flexible Frontsheets

There are many photovoltaic (PV) applications where lighter weight and/or bendable PV power would be beneficial. This includes the curved surfaces of buildings, buildings with weight limitations, boats, automobiles, or other portable applications. In many of these cases, the bending will be only a single occurrence at installation or the amount of bending, even if repeated, is not dramatic. This allows for crystalline silicon modules to be used. For flexible applications, the dominant material for the frontsheet is polyethylene tetrafluoroethylene (PETFE). As a fluoropolymer it resists soiling, is UV stable, and PETFE is a more mechanically durable fluoropolymer. However, in the interests of keeping costs down, less expensive alternative polymers are desirable. In this study, highly accelerated ultraviolet light and heat stresses are applied to candidate materials and the degradation kinetics are determined to provide information to evaluate their suitability for use in a PV application.
