Multispectral scanner flight model (F-1) radiometric calibration and alignment handbook

This handbook on the calibration of the MSS-D flight model (F-1) provides both the relevant data and a summary description of how the data were obtained for the system radiometric calibration, system relative spectral response, and the filter response characteristics for all 24 channels of the four band MSS-D F-1 scanner. The calibration test procedure and resulting test data required to establish the reference light levels of the MSS-D internal calibration system are discussed. The final set of data ("nominal" calibration wedges for all 24 channels) for the internal calibration system is given. The system relative spectral response measurements for all 24 channels of MSS-D F-1 are included. These data are the spectral response of the complete scanner, which are the composite of the spectral responses of the scan mirror primary and secondary telescope mirrors, fiber optics, optical filters, and detectors. Unit level test data on the measurements of the individual channel optical transmission filters are provided. Measured performance is compared to specification values.

Mechanical testing of large thallium doped sodium iodide single crystals

The findings of mechanical tests performed on five thallium-doped sodium iodide NaI(Tl) crystals are presented. These crystals are all in the shape of circular flat plates, 20.0 in. in diameter an d0.5 in. thick. The test setup, testing procedure, and the test data are presented. Large crystals exhibit a high degree of material plasticity, as well as a much higher strength than previously anticipated, on the order of 500 psi. Also revealed from the testing is the fact that crystal with a large number of grain boundaries developed less plasticity, and therefore less permanent deformation, than those with fewer grain boundaries.

Full-Scale Test and Analysis Results of a PRSEUS Fuselage Panel to Assess Damage Containment Features

Integrally stitched composite technology is an area that shows promise in enhancing the structural integrity of aircraft and aerospace structures. The most recent generation of this technology is the Pultruded Rod Stitched Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS) concept. The goal of the PRSEUS concept relevant to this test is to provide damage containment capability for composite structures while reducing overall structural weight. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and The Boeing Company have partnered in an effort to assess the damage containment features of a full-scale curved PRSEUS panel using the FAA Full-Scale Aircraft Structural Test Evaluation and Research (FASTER) facility. A single PRSEUS test panel was subjected to axial tension, internal pressure, and combined axial tension and internal pressure loads. The test results showed excellent performance of the PRSEUS concept. No growth of Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) was observed after ultimate loads were applied. With a two-bay notch severing the central stringer, damage was contained within the two-bay region well above the required limit load conditions. Catastrophic failure was well above the ultimate load level. Information describing the test panel and procedure has been previously presented, so this paper focuses on the experimental procedure, test results, nondestructive inspection results, and preliminary test and analysis correlation.

Experimental Applications of Automatic Test Markup Language (ATML)

The authors describe challenging use-cases for Automatic Test Markup Language (ATML), and evaluate solutions. The first case uses ATML Test Results to deliver active features to support test procedure development and test flow, and bridging mixed software development environments. The second case examines adding attributes to Systems Modelling Language (SysML) to create a linkage for deriving information from a model to fill in an ATML document set. Both cases are outside the original concept of operations for ATML but are typical when integrating large heterogeneous systems with modular contributions from multiple disciplines.

Characterization of Friction Joints Subjected to High Levels of Random Vibration

This paper describes the test program in detail including test sample description, test procedures, and vibration test results of multiple test samples. The material pairs used in the experiment were Aluminum-Aluminum, Aluminum- Dicronite coated Aluminum, and Aluminum-Plasmadize coated Aluminum. Levels of vibration for each set of twelve samples of each material pairing were gradually increased until all samples experienced substantial displacement. Data was collected on 1) acceleration in all three axes, 2) relative static displacement between vibration runs utilizing photogrammetry techniques, and 3) surface galling and contaminant generation. This data was used to estimate the values of static friction during random vibratory motion when "stick-slip" occurs and compare these to static friction coefficients measured before and after vibration testing.

Completion of Dragonfly PPF Testing in the NFAC 80x120-Foot Wind Tunnel

The Dragonfly entry, descent, and landing team (JHU-APL, NASA Langley Research Center, NASA Ames Research Center, Sikorsky Aircraft) recently completed testing in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) 80x120-Foot Wind Tunnel. The facility is located at NASA Ames Research Center and is operated by the U.S. Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Complex. The test was designed to simulate conditions of Preparation for Powered (PPF), an approximately 10-minute period during which the Lander is posed in front of the Backshell at low subsonic airspeeds, all under the main parachute, and the rotors are used to null residual Lander yaw rates prior to release i. e. de-spin. The Lander (approximately 50% scale) that previously was tested in the NASA Langley 14x22 Wind Tunnel in 2023 was used for the NFAC test with a new Backshell designed and fabricated specifically for NFAC. This memorandum summarizes execution of the test: objective, facility and models, instrumentation and data products, test procedure, and completed test matrix. Other future documents will include a test report (JHU-APL) and documentation of data processing/analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) comparisons to test data (Sikorsky).

RG217 V2-V2 Coaxial Cable Acceptance Test

The ECSE Solid State Pulsed Power unit is a high current, high power solid-state pulse modulator. The RG217 V2-V2 Coaxial Cable Assembly is the interface cable between the Solid State Pulser and the load. This document covers the testing procedure for the RG217 V2-V2 Coaxial Cable Assembly. This assembly is comprised of RG217 Coaxial Cable with a LRU Connector on either end. This test procedure verifies the cable is undamaged and assembled correctly, the correct cable connectors are installed properly onto the cable, and that the entire assembly meets conductivity and holdoff voltage requirements. This procedure will verify that the RG217 Coaxial Cable Assembly meets all assembly and functional requirements. In particular, this procedure verifies the Cable Shield and Center Conductor meet conductivity requirements by testing their resistances. Additionally, this procedure ensures the RG217 Coaxial Cable Assembly meets holdoff voltage requirements by applying high voltage and verifying the RG217 Coaxial Cable Assembly does not experience any breakdowns or arcing.

The Mark 3 Haploscope

A computer-operated binocular vision testing device was developed as one part of a system designed for NASA to evaluate the visual function of astronauts during spaceflight. This particular device, called the Mark 3 Haploscope, employs semi-automated psychophysical test procedures to measure visual acuity, stereopsis, phoria, fixation disparity, refractive state and accommodation/convergence relationships. Test procedures are self-administered and can be used repeatedly without subject memorization. The Haploscope was designed as one module of the complete NASA Vision Testing System. However, it is capable of stand-alone operation. Moreover, the compactness and portability of the Haploscope make possible its use in a broad variety of testing environments.

A thermal vacuum test optimization procedure

An analytical model was developed that can be used to establish certain parameters of a thermal vacuum environmental test program based on an optimization of program costs. This model is in the form of a computer program that interacts with a user insofar as the input of certain parameters. The program provides the user a list of pertinent information regarding an optimized test program and graphs of some of the parameters. The model is a first attempt in this area and includes numerous simplifications. The model appears useful as a general guide and provides a way for extrapolating past performance to future missions.

A Standard Platform for Testing and Comparison of MDAO Architectures

The Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) community has developed a multitude of algorithms and techniques, called architectures, for performing optimizations on complex engineering systems which involve coupling between multiple discipline analyses. These architectures seek to efficiently handle optimizations with computationally expensive analyses including multiple disciplines. We propose a new testing procedure that can provide a quantitative and qualitative means of comparison among architectures. The proposed test procedure is implemented within the open source framework, OpenMDAO, and comparative results are presented for five well-known architectures: MDF, IDF, CO, BLISS, and BLISS-2000. We also demonstrate how using open source soft- ware development methods can allow the MDAO community to submit new problems and architectures to keep the test suite relevant.

Chapter 5: Advanced Characterization and Testing of Grid-Forming Resources

In order to compare and define grid-forming (GFM) resources' performance requirements, uniform test procedures are necessary to characterize these resources' capabilities to serve various system needs. Most tests performed on grid-following (GFL) inverters are also required for GFM inverters, with additional tests also needed specifically for GFM inverters. This section describes advanced characterization and testing methods for GFM inverters, with the goal of serving as a guide- line for developing test procedures.

Optical testing

Optical testing is one of the most vital elements in the process of preparing an optical instrument for launch. Without well understood, well controlled, and well documented test procedures, current and future mission goals will be jeopardized. We should keep in mind that the reason we test is to provide an opportunity to catch errors, oversights, and problems on the ground, where solutions are possible and difficulties can be rectified. Consequently, it is necessary to create tractable test procedures that truly provide a measure of the performance of all optical elements and systems under conditions which are close to those expected in space. Where testing is not feasible, accurate experiments are required in order to perfect models that can exactly predict the optical performance. As we stretch the boundaries of technology to perform more complex space and planetary investigations, we must expand the technology required to test the optical components and systems which we send into space. As we expand the observational wavelength ranges, so must we expand our range of optical sources and detectors. As we increase resolution and sensitivity, our understanding of optical surfaces to accommodate more stringent figure and scatter requirements must expand. Only with research and development in these areas can we hope to achieve success in the ever increasing demands made on optical testing by the highly sophisticated missions anticipated over the next two decades. Technology assessment and development plan for surface figure, surface roughness, alignment, image quality, radiometric quantities, and stray light measurement are presented.
