IEA Wind Energy Task 37 System Engineering Aerodynamic Optimization Case Study: Preprint

This paper presents the results from the first IEA Wind Task 37 aerodynamic optimization case study. Eight participants applied their optimization tools to a purely aerodynamic problem and the results were compared. Overall, the different tools produced widely different designs, while there was better agreement in the improvement achieved. This highlights the fact that further investigation is needed to try to understand these differences and develop best practices. There were too many differences between the different analysis and optimization codes to determine the sources of these differences. However, several potential sources of discrepancy were identified for further investigation. One hypothesis is that one potential source of discrepancy is that the design problem itself is relatively flat in design directions of constant loading. This flatness would impact the convergence in the optimization, and at the same time mean that discrepancies in the design itself would be less severe.

IEA PVPS Task 13 Techno-Economic Study of Bifacial Photovoltaic Systems on Single Axis Trackers

The International Energy Agency PVPS Task 13 has assembled an international team of photovoltaic (PV) researchers from government labs, academia, and industry to study the specific application of bifacial PV modules deployed on tracking systems. This configuration is of particular interest as it has been identified as the PV system design with the lowest Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) for over 90% of the world [1]. As such, much research, development, and commercial activity are focused on further optimizing this system design for different regions and markets, including field deployment and advanced modeling activities. Despite these efforts, many challenges remain to overcome with this system design. This conference paper will report on several areas the team is working on as part of this project. The first part of this study focuses on extensive interviews with PV tracker companies (we have identified 35) and customers worldwide to identify emerging technology trends, design diversity, market environments, and the reliability and performance of these systems. We will provide a market summary of technologies such as advanced tracking algorithms, methods for dealing with topography within the PV plant, different system configurations and layouts, backside irradiance optimization from albedo enhancement, and ground sculpting. We will also review dual-use applications of tracked bifacial systems, such as Agrivoltaics and Building-Integrated PV. These interviews are underway now, and we will be able to report our initial findings at the conference. The second part of the study focuses on summarizing performance monitoring and evaluation methods, with particular attention to capacity and acceptance testing for such systems. The third part of the study reviews performance modeling and yield assessment methods for these tracked bifacial PV systems. The final part of the study covers reliability and operations, and maintenance data from these systems.

Performance Evaluation of Augmented Teleoperation of Contact Manipulation Tasks

At Argonne National Laboratory, an enhanced telerobotic concept has been suggested by providing augmented virtual fixtures for precise and dexterous manipulation. The proposed technology incorporated a human-robot interface that can assist personnel on the processes of Deactivation and Decommissioning in sites of high radiation. It has been implemented on a dual-arm robot system, known as Baxter, by integrating the Robotic Operating System (ROS) with 3D sensors and visual-haptic operator interface. However, what remained before its practical utilization is the capability for precisely placing the virtual fixtures. To this end, the objectives involved camera calibration, which required hardware fabrication and setup, as well as modification and implementation of ROS. The goal of this Research and Development is to develop an augmented-reality- based operator interface for human-inclusive, intelligent, and autonomous robotic system for the Deactivation and Decommissioning (D and D) of radioactive sites. The objectives are to develop: Collaborative Robot; Multi-modal Mixed-Reality Human-Robot Interface; Intelligent and Autonomous Behaviors. In order to achieve this, Baxter's Head-Kinect camera and Left-Hand camera need to be calibrated to overlap the real environment with the simulated environment. Camera calibration, which is crucial for precisely placing the virtual fixtures, was successful after running the simulations. The real and simulated environments overlapped, permitting the utilization of augmented teleoperation and the dexterous manipulation of Baxter for D and D applications in nuclear sites. Future steps: Performance evaluation of augmented teleoperation of contact manipulation tasks: Multiple-Camera 3D Reconstruction and Automation. Oculus Interface: Augmented reality and machine learning for enhanced telerobotic operation (Augmented Tele-autonomy): Machine-learning techniques for complex and flexible autonomous robotic behaviors. Interactive remote operation of robotic systems. Mesh cutting with simulation and real robot.

Task-specific sensor optical designs

A method and system architecture for designing a compressive sensing matrix for machine learning includes receiving an image associated with a classification task and; generating a sensing matrix. The sensing matrix includes an array of nonzero elements of the image. A prism array of prism elements is in communication with the sensing matrix. A row of values corresponding with an input angle of the prism array is mapped to a respective column corresponding with a detector. Then the detector detects light refracted at an output angle dictated by the physical shape of the prism element. A physical model of the detector is fabricated and generates a compressed representation of the image. A machine learning classification algorithm is applied to the compressed representation of the image and generates an optimized non-invertible final determination of the image.

Asynchronous-many-task systems: Challenges and opportunities - Scaling an AMR astrophysics code on exascale machines using Kokkos and HPX

Dynamic and adaptive mesh refinement is pivotal in high-resolution, multi-physics, multi-model simulations, necessitating precise physics resolution in localized areas across expansive domains. Today’s supercomputers’ extreme heterogeneity presents a significant challenge for dynamically adaptive codes, highlighting the importance of achieving performance portability at scale. Our research focuses on astrophysical simulations, particularly stellar mergers, to elucidate early universe dynamics. Here, we present Octo-Tiger, leveraging Kokkos, HPX, and SIMD for portable performance at scale in complex, massively parallel adaptive multi-physics simulations. Octo-Tiger supports diverse processors, accelerators, and network backends. Experiments demonstrate exceptional scalability across several heterogeneous supercomputers including Perlmutter, Frontier, and Fugaku, encompassing major GPU architectures and x86, ARM, and RISC-V CPUs. Parallel efficiency of 47.59% (110,080 cores and 6880 hybrid A100 GPUs) on a full-system run on Perlmutter (26% HPCG peak performance) and 51.37% (using 32,768 cores and 2048 MI250X) on Frontier are achieved.

Assessment of task‐based performance from five clinical DBT systems using an anthropomorphic breast phantom

Purpose Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is a limited‐angle tomographic breast imaging modality that can be used for breast cancer screening in conjunction with full‐field digital mammography (FFDM) or synthetic mammography (SM). Currently, there are five commercial DBT systems that have been approved by the U.S. FDA for breast cancer screening, all varying greatly in design and imaging protocol. Because the systems are different in technical specifications, there is a need for a quantitative approach for assessing them. In this study, the DBT systems are assessed using a novel methodology with an inkjet‐printed anthropomorphic phantom and four alternative forced choice (4AFC) study scheme. Method A breast phantom was fabricated using inkjet printing and parchment paper. The phantom contained 5‐mm spiculated masses fabricated with potassium iodide (KI)‐doped ink and microcalcifications (MCs) made with calcium hydroxyapatite. Images of the phantom were acquired on all five systems with DBT, FFDM, and SM modalities where available using beam settings under automatic exposure control. A 4AFC study was conducted to assess reader performance with each signal under each modality. Statistical analysis was performed on the data to determine proportion correct (PC), standard deviations, and levels of significance. Results For masses, overall detection was highest with DBT. The difference in PC was statistically significant between DBT and SM for most systems. A relationship was observed between increasing PC and greater gantry span. For MCs, performance was highest with DBT and FFDM compared to SM. The difference between PC of DBT and PC of SM was statistically significant for all manufacturers. Conclusions This methodology represents a novel approach for evaluating systems. This study is the first of its kind to use an inkjet‐printed anthropomorphic phantom with realistic signals to assess performance of clinical DBT imaging systems.
