Containers on Switches: A Cluster School Experience

Network switches, such as those from Arista and Mellanox, often have underutilized computational resources in the form of built-in processors and memory. By leveraging these untapped resources, we can optimize functionality and efficiency of computational cluster networks. Our research focuses on deploying containers directly onto these switches to execute various auxiliary tasks ranging from metric logging to system-wide management via post-boot configuration. By doing so, we can significantly enchance the capabilities of the cluster without the need for additional dedicated hardware. Our research involved five distinct scenarios where switch utilization could have a profound impact on HPC Clusters: run cloud-init services via link-local connection; configuring a Telegraf container to export metrics; deploying a caching proxy; creating a reconfigurable IPv6 DHCP/DNS provider for VLAN; and implementing a client detection with Magellan discovery. These scenarios were containerized with podman and docker, and tested both physically on the switch virtually on a QEMU VM both running SONiC OS. Testing and findings indicate that network switches can indeed be used for these scenarios. They offer a wide range of possibilities beyond these applications. They run as expected as containers on the switches, and although there were some minor issues, work-arounds were implemented. Overall, this is a positive result that can be further explored with more scenarios.

Thermal Analysis of the Bus Bars for the 800MeV Injection Era (Fermilab Summer School 2023)

My internship at IARC has been focused on the thermal analysis of the bus bars of the Booster. The bus bars are the conductors that bring the bias current from the bias supply to the ferrite tuners in each RF cavity of the synchrotron. Since they are not superconductors, during normal operations they will heat up due to the Joule effect. The goal of my work is to build a model of the bus bars assembly that describes effectively the experimental data and that can be used to predict the temperature increase and distribution among the components of the assembly, in present and future operational conditions.

Instrumentation for airbreathing propulsion; Proceedings of the Symposium, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., September 19-21, 1972

New developments and refinements in measuring techniques used for both ground testing and in-flight control, diagnosis, and monitoring of airbreathing combustors are analyzed in a number of papers. Some of the techniques studied include the application of laser velocimeters for flow measurements; on-the-shaft data systems for rotating engine components; total pressure averaging in pulsating flows; fiber optic and laser digital pressure transducers; holography of nozzles, jets, and spraying systems; application of the Raman effect fo flowfield diagnostics; holography of JP-4 droplets and combusting boron particles; the use of a laser-powered optical proximity probe in advanced turbofan engine development; pyrometry for measurement of surface temperature distribution on a rotating turbine blade; an ultrasonic turbine inlet gas temperature sensor; automatic detection and suppression of inlet buzz; and electrostatic probes for sensing incipient engine failure. Individual items are announced in this issue.

The Colorado School of Mines Nevada geothermal study

Geothermal systems in the Basin and Range Province of the western United States probably differ in many respects from geothermal systems already discovered in other parts of the world because of the unique tectonic setting. To investigate this, a study of the geothermal occurrences at Fly Ranch, approximately 100 miles north of Reno, Nevada, has been undertaken. Ample evidence for a geothermal system exists in this area, including the surface expression of heat flow in the form of hot springs, an extensive area of low electrical resistivity, and a high level of seismicity along faults bounding the thermal area. However, geophysical and geological studies have not yet provided evidence for a local heat source at depth. Additional detailed geophysical and geological studies, as well as drilling, must be completed before the geothermal system can be described fully.

Propulsion system structural integration and engine integrity; Proceedings of the Symposium, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., September 3-6, 1974

Current problems involving the structural integrity of propulsion systems, and proposed approaches to solving them, are reviewed. Areas investigated include the stall hammershock at the engine inlet, distortion-induced vibration in fan and compressor blading, modeling engine static structures with conical-shell finite elements, design and development of low-cost, self-contained bearing lubrication systems for turbine engines, and roller bearing slip and skidding damage. Individual items are announced in this issue.
