Protection of Radial Circuits with High Penetration Distributed Photovoltaics

The paper addresses the shortcomings of distribution protection systems as distribution level photovoltaic installations as well as other inverter based distributed resources are added to the system. Several protection schemes have been evaluated, including distance-based, estimation-based and learning-based. The paper summarizes the results and provides recommendations.

Damage progression and failure of SiC/SiC composite tubes under hard-contact radial expansion

The response of silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (SiC/SiC) composite cladding to mechanical interaction with fissile fuel is a knowledge gap that must be overcome to design and assess SiC-based cladding systems for advanced nuclear applications. This study developed the relevant mechanical testing capability and identified the failure behavior and the critical microstructural features and processing defects. Sections of SiC composite tube were subjected to a modified expansion-due-to-compression (EDC) test in an X-ray computed tomography microscope: a polyurethane plug pressed surrogate Al 2 O 3 into the inner walls of the SiC/SiC composite tubes to achieve hard contact. A pure EDC test with just a polyurethane plug was also performed as a reference. Through the use of displacement fields, digital volume correlation revealed inhomogeneous deformation fields in the tubes, even for pure EDC, which was related to the inherent defects in the structure. Deep learning–aided segmentation and systematic data analysis revealed that the presence of inhomogeneous deformation applied by the hard contact was exaggerated by the presence of inner surface imperfections left behind from the matrix densification process. In conclusion, the findings provide insights into the applications, highlighting the necessity for improvements in inner surface roughness and the incorporation of localized contacts in pellet–cladding mechanical interaction computational models.

Electron diffraction radial distribution function analysis of amorphous boron carbide synthesized by ion beam irradiation and chemical vapor deposition

Amorphous boron carbide (a-BxC) networks consist of light elements, and their low atomic scattering factors makes structural analysis by x-ray diffraction difficult. Electron diffraction has an advantage of detecting the light elements, because of the strong interaction between the matter and electrons. In this work, we prepared a-BxC by ion beam technologies and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, and characterized their structures via atomic pair-distribution functions derived from electron diffraction intensity profiles. It was found that a pentagonal pyramid is the most favorable cluster in a-B4C generated by ion irradiation, while C—C homonuclear bonds were formed in the deposited a-B x C thin film. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the a-BxC thin film possesses more carbon than B 4 C, which is responsible for the formation of the homonuclear bonds.

Radial burnup characteristics of spent fuel pellets by zirconium analysis

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for in-situ measurements of elemental ratios in micrometer-sized spent fuel samples. By measuring the concentration of the fission product Zr we provide a framework for determining fuel burnup while simultaneously considering the 239 Pu fission fraction. Here, the analyzed spent fuel samples were taken from different fuels and distances from the fuel pellets’ edge. Results show a burnup enhancement at the edge of a fuel pellet of 180–220% compared to the center of the pellet. By comparing the concentration of the anthropogenic 93 Zr to the naturally occurring Zr isotopes, any influence of non-fissiogenic Zr or disturbing neutron capture reactions can be ruled out. This established 93 Zr as a new tool to measure fuel burnup.

Generating multi-scale Li-ion battery cathode particles with radial grain architectures using stereological generative adversarial networks

Abstract Understanding structure-property relationships of Li-ion battery cathodes is crucial for optimizing rate-performance and cycle-life resilience. However, correlating the morphology of cathode particles, such as in LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811), and their inner grain architecture with electrode performance is challenging, particularly, due to the significant length-scale difference between grain and particle sizes. Experimentally, it is not feasible to image such a high number of particles with full granular detail. A second challenge is that sufficiently high-resolution 3D imaging techniques remain expensive and are sparsely available at research institutions. Here, we present a stereological generative adversarial network-based model fitting approach to tackle this, that generates representative 3D information from 2D data, enabling characterization of materials in 3D using cost-effective 2D data. Once calibrated, this multi-scale model can rapidly generate virtual cathode particles that are statistically similar to experimental data, and thus is suitable for virtual characterization and materials testing through numerical simulations. A large dataset of simulated particles with inner grain architecture has been made publicly available.
