Performance Evaluation of a Prototype Moving Packed-Bed Particle/sCO 2 Heat Exchanger

Particle heat exchangers are a critical enabling technology for next generation concentrating solar power (CSP) plants that use supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) as a working fluid. This report covers the design, manufacturing and testing of a prototype particle-to-sCO 2 heat exchanger targeting thermal performance levels required to meet commercial scale cost targets. In addition, the the design and assembly of integrated particle and sCO 2 flow loops for heat exchanger performance testing are detailed. The prototype heat exchanger was tested to particle inlet temperatures of 500 °C at 17 MPa which resulted in overall heat transfer coefficients of approximately 300 W/m 2 -K at the design point and cases using high approach temperature with peak values as high as 400 W/m 2 -K

FY2022 Filter Test for TRU Waste Drum Prototype Unit

Continuing last year’s (fiscal year 2021) work, a prototype instrument and an NPI-6 Integrated Work Document (IWD) were developed to assess the functionality of filters on transuranic waste containers (commonly called 55 Gallon ring-top drums) without requiring the removal of the drum lid. The purpose of this work is to determine the air flow and pressure characteristics associated with filter clogging, filter pressure drop at a fixed flow rate, and leakage around the lid seal. The FY22 objectives included: (A) Development of prototype device, (B) Drafting an IWD document, (C) Defining a filter clogging parameter, (D) Assessing filter damage due to over-pressure events, and (E) A path forward to obtain approval of the system safety filters in compliance with P101-16 Industrial Ventilation – non HVACR (LANL 2022).

Sirius I: prototype of a prime-power source for future 1 - 10 GJ fusion-yield experiments

We have designed, assembled, and tested a prototype coaxial impedance-matched Marx generator (IMG). An IMG is a pulsed-power device that achieves electromagnetic-power amplification by triggered emission of radiation. Hence an IMG is a pulsed-power analog of a laser, with an energy efficiency of 90%. We have demonstrated that the prototype performs as predicted theoretically, thereby proving the IMG concept. We propose that a system of IMGs drive a next-generation pulsed-power accelerator that delivers 90 MA to a physics load. Such a machine would attain thermonuclear-fusion yields as high as 1 – 10 GJ, and revolutionize high energy-density-physics experiments in support of the national-security mission.

SAMPA Based Streaming Readout Data Acquisition Prototype

We have assembled a small-scale streaming data acquisition system based on the SAMPA front-end ASIC. The 32-channel SAMPA chip was designed for the high-luminosity upgrade of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The goals of the prototype system are to determine if the SAMPA chip is appropriate for use in detector systems at Jefferson Lab, and to gain experience with the hardware and software required to deploy streaming data acquisition systems in nuclear physics experiments. The 800 channel system is composed of components used in the ALICE TPC data acquisition upgrade. Five front-end cards (FEC) support five SAMPA chips each. SAMPA data streams on an FEC are concentrated into two high-speed (4.48 Gb/s) serial data streams by a pair Gigabit Transceiver ASICs (GBTx). These ten streams (44.8 Gb/s) are transmitted from the FECs over fibers to a PCIe based readout unit. The FPGA engine on the readout unit compresses data for transmission to a server via 100 Gb ethernet. Components on the FECs are radiation tolerant. High data rates can be handled. The system is by design scalable and thus provides a functional prototype for high-rate streaming readout at Jefferson Lab and the future Electron Ion Collider. We have made fundamental measurements (noise, linearity, time resolution) on the SAMPA ASIC. We have also coupled the readout system to a small Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector and have studied its response to cosmic rays. A beam test of the system is planned.

Design and Prototyping of a Novel Toroid Magnet System for the MOLLER Experiment at Jefferson Lab

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) has designed a unique spectrometer system to measure the weak interaction between electrons. The experiment ?Measurement of Lepton-Lepton Electroweak Reaction? (MOLLER) requires leveraging the recent 12 GeV electron beam upgrade and will run in JLab for 3 years. Focusing the signal for the MOLLER experiment requires five water-cooled toroidal magnets, each with unique geometry and with 7-fold symmetry. This system of magnets provides the magnetic field required to separate the incident beam electrons scattered from the target electrons (Møller scattering) and protons (elastic e-p scattering) in a liquid hydrogen target. The conceptual design was developed by the MOLLER collaboration and was given to JLab in the form of amp turns and physical location, with additional physics requirements. This paper presents prototyping of the coils and magnet support system and discusses the lessons learned during the process along with the plans for full magnet testing and installation. The JLab Magnet Group along with the MOLLER collaboration developed the specification document that includes keep out zones to design the set of magnets. JLab contracted the design of the first toroid magnet in the magnet (TM0) to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The other four toroid magnets (TM1 through TM4) have been designed by JLab and are in the process of fabrication and assembly. Prototype coils of TM1-TM4 have been fabricated by Everson-Tesla Incorporated, PA (USA). The manuscript presents the unique challenges of the design, alignment, high current density, operating range, high radiation dose, and vacuum environment.

Manufacturing the Harmonic Kicker Cavity Prototype for the Electron-Ion Collider

High-bunch-frequency beam-separation schemes, such as the injection scheme proposed for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron at the Electron-Ion Collider, demand rise and fall times an order of magnitude below what can realistically be accomplished with a stripline kicker. Nanosecond-time-scale kick waveforms can instead be obtained by Fourier synthesis in a harmonically resonant quarter-wave radio-frequency cavity which is optimized for high shunt impedance. Originally developed for the Jefferson Lab Electron-Ion Collider (JLEIC) Circulator Cooler Ring, a hypothetical 11-pass ring driven by an energy-recovery linac at Jefferson Lab, our high-power prototype of such a harmonic kicker cavity, which operates at five modes at the same time, will demonstrate the viability of this concept with a beam test at Jefferson Lab. As the geometry of the cavity, tight mechanical tolerances, and number of ports complicate the design and manufacturing process, special care must be given to the order of the manufacturing steps. We present our experiences with the manufacturability of the present design, lessons learned, and first RF test results from the prototype.

Counting Calories: Light Yield Studies for ADRIANO Calorimeter Prototype

To estimate the light yield for ADRIANO prototype, we must calibrate the light sensors as well as collect data from beams of known properties. Future experiments searching for new physics require special calorimetric techniques to detect new particles. ADRIANO2(A Dual Readout Integrally Active Non-segmented Option) is one such technique. Several prototypes have been tested at Mtest Facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in the last few years. This work consisting of new and more refined analysis of the data taken with the intent of improving the understanding of this calorimeter.

The beam test of the lead tungstate calorimeter prototype with SiPM readout at Jefferson Lab

The lead tungstate crystals (PWO4) are a well-known radiator material for precise homogeneous electromagnetic calorimetry. In nuclear physics experiments, the typical way to read out the crystals is using conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In the case of the presence of a magnetic field, such a method has some complications and requires a passive PMT shielding design. The recent development of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) with small pixel pitch sizes and relatively small noise levels opens an opportunity avenue to use such a device as an alternative to conventional PMTs. The SiPM readout method may be beneficial for future nuclear physics and collider experiments. We are presenting the beam test results of the calorimeter prototype instrumented with SiPM readout performed at Jefferson Lab. The SiPM readout performance was compared with PMT readout measured at the same experimental conditions. The prototype was successfully tested using beam of photons in the energy range between 3 GeV and 11 GeV in experimental Hall D. The detector performance was also studied using a secondary beam of positrons provided by Hall D pair spectrometer.

Design, Fabrication and Concept for the Surface Treatment of the SRF Cavity Prototype for the CLIC Damping Rings

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) Damping Rings (DRs) need to generate ultra-low emittance bunches to achieve high luminosity in CLIC. This requires many wiggler magnets with big energy loss which is compensated by the Radio Frequency (RF) system. The resulting strong beam loading transients lead to a challenging design for the RF system. A novel SRF cavity at 2 GHz with an ultra-low R/Q parameter of below 1 Ω is proposed to minimize the transient beam loading effects below acceptable level. The design and fabrication of the bulk Nb prototype based on turning from a single piece of Nb and EB welding is presented. Moreover, conceptual study of the system for cavity surface treatment to achieve the highest surface magnetic field which is the main goal of the prototype cold test is described as well. To enable excellent performance in this cavity, we plan to apply the 75/120C modified low temperature bake in combination with the cold electropolishing process. This surface treatment approach has been shown to consistently deliver high accelerating gradients and improved quality factors in TESLA-shaped 1.3 GHz SRF cavities. By adapting and implementing this process for the 2 GHz ultra-low R/Q design, we aim to maximize the achievable surface magnetic field while minimizing residual resistance and field emission. This treatment strategy will be critical for demonstrating that the cavity can meet the demanding performance requirements of the CLIC damping ring RF system under high beam loading conditions.

140° Line of Sight (LOS) Mounting Fixture Prototype for ZNeutron Time of Flight (Z-NToF)

The 140° Line of Sight (LOS) Mounting Fixture Prototype for the Z-Neutron Time of Flight diagnostic (Z-NToF) is a prototype support structure for the NToF Jac Black that will be fielded at Sandia’s Z-Machine. The Mounting Fixture will allow the detector to be properly positioned and aligned horizontally from the load, with manual horizontal and vertical translation capabilities, and a limited manual rotation capability. It attaches overhead I-beams at Sandia’s Z machine 140° location approximately 18m from the average source location. The assembly (1011219955) is shown in Figure 1 below. It is capable of rotating ±20° about the vertical axis of the Jac Black detector and translating ±37.5mm horizontally along the Mounting Plate. Vertical adjustments of ±76.2mm can be made using the Lead Screw. Coarser adjustments are possible by changing the number of plates between the I-Beam Hanger Assemblies and the 5in and changing the position of the clamps on the I-beams at Z.

Cauer Prototype for Butterworth Filters: Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, and Bandstop Transformations

I had a need to develop a real, physical, analog filter with real RLC components. Having spent a career in theory, I had only ever designed filters for signal processing. I needed only the a and b coefficients. But converting a and b coefficients into RLC values was beyond me. Web searches returned nothing useful until I found Dr. Aaron Danner’s Designing Passive Butterworth Filters (10 - Passive Filters), part of an excellent YouTube series which introduced me to the Cauer prototype for Butterworth filters and Cauer topologies. Failing to find documentation on Cauer filter prototypes, I asked Anthropic’s Claude AI for assistance. Claude returned a few errors which I corrected. This is a comprehensive report on what I learned.

Tests of LBNF Beam Monitor Prototypes for the DUNE Experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a long-baseline on-axis neutrino oscillation experiment that will use a beam from the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) to constrain the mixing angle $$\theta_{23}$, the neutrino mass hierarchy, and the CP violating phase $\delta_{CP}$. To ensure the beam remains on-axis, the LBNF beamline will employ two ionization chamber systems: the Hadron Alignment Detection System (HADeS) for primary beam alignment and the Muon Monitoring System (MuMS) for continuous beam monitoring and neutrino flux estimation. We have constructed prototypes for these systems at the University of Texas at Austin based on a design currently used in the NuMI hadron monitor. These prototypes were tested with a radioactive source and in beam tests at Fermilab's Irradiation Test Area. We present the results of these studies and discuss ongoing efforts to optimize the HADeS and MuMS designs.

A digital twin solution for floating offshore wind turbines validated using a full-scale prototype

Abstract. In this work, we implement, verify, and validate a physics-based digital twin solution applied to a floating offshore wind turbine. The digital twin is validated using measurement data from the full-scale TetraSpar prototype. We focus on the estimation of the aerodynamic loads, wind speed, and section loads along the tower, with the aim of estimating the fatigue lifetime of the tower. Our digital twin solution integrates (1) a Kalman filter to estimate the structural states based on a linear model of the structure and measurements from the turbine, (2) an aerodynamic estimator, and (3) a physics-based virtual sensing procedure to obtain the loads along the tower. The digital twin relies on a set of measurements that are expected to be available on any existing wind turbine (power, pitch, rotor speed, and tower acceleration) and motion sensors that are likely to be standard measurements for a floating platform (inclinometers and GPS sensors). We explore two different pathways to obtain physics-based models: a suite of dedicated Python tools implemented as part of this work and the OpenFAST linearization feature. In our final version of the digital twin, we use components from both approaches. We perform different numerical experiments to verify the individual models of the digital twin. In this simulation realm, we obtain estimated damage equivalent loads of the tower fore–aft bending moment with an accuracy of approximately 5 % to 10 %. When comparing the digital twin estimations with the measurements from the TetraSpar prototype, the errors increased to 10 %–15 % on average. Overall, the accuracy of the results is promising and demonstrates the possibility of using digital twin solutions to estimate fatigue loads on floating offshore wind turbines. A natural continuation of this work would be to implement the monitoring and diagnostics aspect of the digital twin to inform operation and maintenance decisions. The digital twin solution is provided with examples as part of an open-source repository.

Design and development of a prototype wet oxidation system for the reclamation of water and the disposition of waste residues onboard space vehicles

Laboratory investigations to define optimum process conditions for oxidation of fecal/urine slurries were conducted in a one-liter batch reactor. The results of these tests formed the basis for the design, fabrication, and testing of an initial prototype system, including a 100-hour design verification test. Areas of further development were identified during this test. Development of a high pressure slurry pump, materials corrosion studies, oxygen supply trade studies, comparison of salt removal water recovery devices, ammonia removal investigation, development of a solids grinder, reactor design studies and bearing life tests, and development of shutoff valves and a back pressure regulator were undertaken. The development work has progressed to the point where a prototype system suitable for manned chamber testing can be fabricated and tested with a high degree of confidence of success.
