Thermal WIMPs and the scale of new physics: global fits of Dirac dark matter effective field theories

We assess the status of a wide class of WIMP dark matter (DM) models in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework GAMBIT. We perform a global analysis of effective field theory (EFT) operators describing the interactions between a gauge-singlet Dirac fermion and the Standard Model quarks, the gluons and the photon. In this bottom-up approach, we simultaneously vary the coefficients of 14 such operators up to dimension 7, along with the DM mass, the scale of new physics and several nuisance parameters. Our likelihood functions include the latest data from Planck, direct and indirect detection experiments, and the LHC. For DM masses below 100 GeV, we find that it is impossible to satisfy all constraints simultaneously while maintaining EFT validity at LHC energies. For new physics scales around 1 TeV, our results are influenced by several small excesses in the LHC data and depend on the prescription that we adopt to ensure EFT validity. Furthermore, we find large regions of viable parameter space where the EFT is valid and the relic density can be reproduced, implying that WIMPs can still account for the DM of the universe while being consistent with the latest data.

Programmable, direct space-to-time picosecond resolution pulse shaper with nanosecond record

In this work, we demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, extension of optical arbitrary waveform generation capable of picosecond resolution over nanosecond duration. The method, called space–time induced linearly encoded transcription for temporal optimization, is based on direct space-to-time pulse shaping and is extended here to single-mode output with a programmable temporal profile. We develop the theory of operation and discuss ultimate limits on resolution, record length, and efficiency. We report on the results of an experimental demonstration showing ~1ps resolution over 600 ps.

The fm demodulator with negative feedback

This paper describes the design and theory of operation of the wideband FM demodulator with feedback (FMFB receiver) used at the Andover, Maine, earth station for Telstar satellite communications tests. Performance data for the FMFB receiver indicate a clear advantage over the conventional FM receiver in many cases. The principal advantage lies in the ability of the FMFB receiver to raise the threshold at which “breaking” occurs for TV and other wideband signals.

Some unique applications of intense magnetic fields

A brief history of our knowledge of ordinary magnetism and electromagnetism is given, from the time of the Roman poet, Lucretius Carus, to the present. Practical examples of magnetic field strength associated with objects familiar to all are discussed, and a frame of reference regarding magnetic field strength is thereby established. The earliest known investigators of intense transient magnetic field manipulation of solid conductor materials are mentioned, and the phenomena described. Systems, apparatus, and basic theory of operation are detailed. The importance of adequate diagnostics is discussed, and some techniques employed are illustrated. The "magnetic sawing" phenomenon is described, and implications explained. Typical applications are shown, including swaging, sizing, sealing. clamping, forming, and other unique neoterisms. A particularly successful application, the magnetomotive sizer, is described in detail, and beneficial application in the Saturn V program is described. Potential industrial applications are prognosticated, and developmental trends are indicated.

The feasibility of electrohydrodynamic heat pipes

The effect of a nonuniform electrostatic field on insulating dielectric liquids in heat pipes was studied. Topics discussed include the theory of operation, design criteria, and evaluation of optimal design features. It is concluded that the electrodynamic heat pipes offer advantages that must be weighed against the disadvantages in order to arrive at a proper assessment of their value in solving heat transfer problems.

Apollo experience report: Very high frequency ranging system

The history of the Apollo very-high-frequency ranging system development program is presented from the program-planning stage through the final-test and flight-evaluation stages. Block diagrams of the equipment are presented, and a description of the theory of operation is outlined. A sample of the distribution of errors measured in the aircraft-flight test program is included. The report is concluded with guidelines or recommendations for the management of development programs having the same general constraints.

Hydrogen density measurements using an open-ended microwave cavity.

The density measurement of liquid hydrogen and two-phase mixtures of liquid and gaseous hydrogen is considered. This paper describes a complete prototype system that uses an open-ended microwave cavity for making dynamic density measurements of flowing hydrogen in a transfer line. The theory of operation along with test results for both the single- and two-phase cases are presented and discussed.

A high speed sequential decoder

The performance and theory of operation for the High Speed Hard Decision Sequential Decoder are delineated. The decoder is a forward error correction system which is capable of accepting data from binary-phase-shift-keyed and quadriphase-shift-keyed modems at input data rates up to 30 megabits per second. Test results show that the decoder is capable of maintaining a composite error rate of 0.00001 at an input E sub b/N sub o of 5.6 db. This performance has been obtained with minimum circuit complexity.

An update of input instructions to TEMOD

The theory and operation of a FORTRAN 4 computer code, designated as TEMOD, used to calcuate tubular thermoelectric generator performance is described in WANL-TME-1906. The original version of TEMOD was developed in 1969. A description is given of additions to the mathematical model and an update of the input instructions to the code. Although the basic mathematical model described in WANL-TME-1906 has remained unchanged, a substantial number of input/output options were added to allow completion of module performance parametrics as required in support of the compact thermoelectric converter system technology program.

A mercury flow meter for ion thruster testing

The theory of operation of the thermal flow meter is presented, and a theoretical model is used to determine design parameters for a device capable of measuring mercury flows in the range of 0 to 5 gm/hr. Flow meter construction is described. Tests performed using a positive displacement mercury pump as well as those performed with the device in the feed line of an operating thruster are discussed. A flow meter response time of about a minute and a sensitivity of about 10 mv/gm/hr are demonstrated. Additional work to relieve a sensitivity of the device to variations in ambient temperature is indicated to improve its quantitative performance.

A users manual for a revised version of the Langley charring ablator program

A computer program is described that will compute the transient response of a thermal protection material to a prescribed heat input at the surface. The program has the capability of analyzing pyrolysis gas chemical kinetics in detail and treating pyrolysis reactions-in-depth. Deposition of solid products produced by chemical reactions in the gas phase is included in the analysis. An outline is given for the theory. detailed operating instructions for the computer program are included.
