Nonlinear ion transport mediated by induced charge in ultrathin nanoporous membranes

Ultrathin membranes with nanoporous conduits show promise for ionic separations and desalination applications, but the mechanisms underlying the nonlinear ionic transport observed in these systems are not well understood. Here, in this work, we demonstrate how induced charge at membrane interfaces can lead to nonlinear ionic transport and voltage-dependent conductance through such channels. The application of an electric field on a polarizable membrane leads to induced charges at the membrane interfaces. The induced charges in turn are screened by diffuse charges in the electrolyte, which are acted upon by the electric field. For extremely thin membranes, the induced charge effect can be significant even for moderate applied voltages commonly used in experiments. We apply a continuum Poisson-Nernst-Planck model to characterize the current-voltage behavior of ultrathin membranes over a wide parameter space. The predictions of the model are compared to recent experiments on graphene and MoS 2 membranes in an electric field. We expect the role of induced charge to be especially pronounced in the limit of atomically thin membranes.

Nonlinear Thermal Compensators for WGM Resonators

In an alternative version of a proposed bimaterial thermal compensator for a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) optical resonator, a mechanical element having nonlinear stiffness would be added to enable stabilization of a desired resonance frequency at a suitable fixed working temperature. The previous version was described in "Bimaterial Thermal Compensators for WGM Resonators." Both versions are intended to serve as inexpensive means of preventing (to first order) or reducing temperature-related changes in resonance frequencies.

Statistical mechanics of neocortical interactions - Dynamics of synaptic modification

A recent study has demonstrated that several scales of neocortical interactions can be consistently analyzed with the use of methods of modern nonlinear nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. The formation, stability, and interaction of spatial-temporal patterns of columnar firings are explicitly calculated, to test hypothesized mechanisms relating to information processing. In this context, most probable patterns of columnar firings are associated with chemical and electrical synaptic modifications. It is stressed that synaptic modifications and shifts in most-probable firing patterns are highly nonlinear and interactive sets of phenomena. A detailed scenario of information processing is calculated of columnar coding of external stimuli, short-term storage via hysteresis, and long-term storage via synaptic modification.

Nonlinear baroclinic adjustment

The concept of baroclinic adjustment is reexamined in the context of a fully nonlinear two-layer model on a beta-plane. Based on the results, a single, conceptually very simple mechanism of the nonlinear equilibration of waves and the mean flow is proposed, which is termed 'nonlinear baroclinic adjustment'. The new concept appears applicable to cases that currently require different explanations, varying from case to case, to account for the equilibration of the mean temperature gradient in the presence of external driving.

Cascaded Optical Nonlinearities in Dielectric Metasurfaces

Since the discovery of the laser, optical nonlinearities have been at the core of efficient light conversion sources. Typically, thick transparent crystals or quasi-phase matched waveguides are utilized in conjunction with phase-matching techniques to select a single parametric process. In recent years, due to the rapid developments in artificially structured materials, optical frequency mixing has been achieved at the nanoscale in subwavelength resonators arrayed as metasurfaces. Phase matching becomes relaxed for these wavelength-scale structures, and all allowed nonlinear processes can, in principle, occur on an equal footing. This could promote harmonic generation via a cascaded (consisting of several frequency mixing steps) process. However, so far, all reported work on dielectric metasurfaces have assumed frequency mixing from a direct (single step) nonlinear process. In this work, we prove the existence of cascaded second-order optical nonlinearities by analyzing the second- and third-wave mixing from a highly nonlinear metasurface in conjunction with polarization selection rules and crystal symmetries. We find that the third-wave mixing signal from a cascaded process can be of comparable strength to that from conventional third-harmonic generation and that surface nonlinearities are the dominant mechanism that contributes to cascaded second-order nonlinearities in our metasurface.

Radiative amplification of sound waves in the winds of O and B stars

The velocity perturbation associated with an outwardly propagating sound wave in a radiation-driven stellar wind gives rise to a periodic Doppler shifting of absorption lines formed in the flow. A linearized theory applicable to optically thin waves is used to show that the resulting fluctuation in the absorption-line force can cause the wave amplitude to grow. Detailed calculations of the acceleration due to a large number of lines indicate that significant amplification can occur throughout the high-velocity portion of winds in which the dominant force-producing lines have appreciable optical depths. In the particular case of the wind of Zeta Pup (O4f), it is found that the e-folding distance for wave growth is considerably shorter than the scale lengths over which the physical properties of the flow vary. A qualitative estimate of the rate at which mechanical energy due to nonlinear waves can be dissipated suggests that this mechanism may be important in heating the supersonic portion of winds of early-type stars.

Degradation of the contrast of a short light pulse in a CPA system

We have calculated the effect of four-wave mixing of the main radiation pulse with the background radiation components on the value of the output radiation contrast in a chirped pulse amplification system of petawatt laser facilities. Formulae are presented that make it possible to quantify the contributions of two mechanisms, i.e. Kerr nonlinearity of the refractive index of the amplifying medium and gain saturation. For typical values of the nonlinear refractive index, both contributions are comparable. The possibility of mutual quenching of nonlinear contributions is noted. The influence of spectral filtering of radiation on the output pulse contrast is considered. (paper)

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number ( Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newton’s method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h -adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Aria’s more advanced capabilities.

The relationship between phytoplankton concentration and light attenuation in ocean waters

The accuracy of chlorophyll estimates by ocean color algorithms is affected by the variability of particulate attenuation; the presence of dissolved organic matter; and the nonlinear inverse relationship between the attenuation coefficient, K, and chlorophyll. Data collected during the Warm Core Rings Program were used to model the downwelling light field and determine the impact of these errors. A possible mechanism for the nonlinearity of K and chlorophyll is suggested; namely, that changing substrate from nitrate-nitrogen to ammonium causes enhanced blue absorption by photosynthetic phytoplankton in oligotrophic surface waters.
