Specification of Radionuclide Classes for MELCOR Molten Salt Reactor Simulations

MELCOR has been used extensively to facilitate virtual investigations into severe nuclear accidents for light-water reactors (LWRs). Non-light water reactors (non-LWRs) render some LWR-centric approaches potentially unsuitable. MELCOR has been instrumental in analyzing source terms for LWRs and has recently expanded its applicability to non-LWRs. To simplify radionuclide (RN) tracking, MELCOR currently groups elements into 17 classes, each containing representative species. This grouping, optimized for LWRs, is not appropriate for non-LWRs due to the different chemistry. This necessitates a reevaluation of radionuclide transport modeling. This report introduces a new class scheme for MELCOR tailored to MSR modeling, expanding the current 17 classes to 32 and are explained in the context of a UF 4 fueled FLiBe carrier MSR. It provides a discussion and justification for the new groupings and outlines a methodology for discovering and defining additional classes in MELCOR using a sample calculated RN inventory and a Gibbs energy minimizer (GEM).

Towards the Development of Molten Salt Reactor Multiphysics Modeling Capabilities: Depletion, Thermochemistry, Reactor Dynamics, and Species Tracking

This report documents the simulation and modeling work performed under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, utilizing the tools and codes developed under the program. The focus in this Fiscal Year (FY) is on the depletion, thermochemistry, reactor dynamics, and species transport in MSRs. The fission products travelling in the entire primary loop is unique in MSRs. There are many physical/chemical mechanisms that can significantly affect the fission products concentration in the fuel salt, e.g., diffusion into gas bubbles, diffusion in the core moderators, deposition on the surface of structures/pipes, etc. The fission product concentration in the fuel salt can potentially affect the neutronics, system dynamics, chemical potentials, etc., so accurately predicting the fission products distribution in the primary loop is important. Under the main objective, different activities are pursued to assess the NEAMS tools applicability for a variety of areas on species transport, including the depletion analyses using Griffin (fission product source), the redox potential assessment at different depletion points, the assessment of xenon transport effect on the neutronics and reactor dynamics, a survey of correlations for calculating the mass transfer coefficient of different fission products, etc.

Integrated Molten Salt Reactor Modeling Capabilities in NEAMS Thermal Hydraulics Tools

The DOE Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program supports a full range of computational thermal fluids analysis capabilities and code developments for a broad range of advanced reactor concepts. The research and development approach under the thermal fluids technical area synergistically combines three length and time scales in a hierarchical multi-scale approach. To enable multi-scale thermal fluids capability using these codes, a key joint effort has been underway to develop an integrated system- and engineering-scale thermal fluids analysis capability, through integration of SAM and Pronghorn codes, both based on the MOOSE framework.

Material Accountancy for Molten Salt Reactors: Challenges and Opportunities

The large upfront capital costs associated with new nuclear facilities is a substantial barrier to future growth. Facility retrofits to accommodate effective nuclear security can be expensive, particularly in facilities with large inventories of bulk nuclear material. The recent and sustained interest in advanced nuclear power presents the opportunity to implement material control and accountancy (MC&A) measures in the design phase to lower the possibility of costly retrofits.
