Material Control & Accounting Statistical Test Modeling Supporting the Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility Using F3M and MAPIT

This report covers the application of the TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel fabrication facility material control & accounting (MC&A) modeling capability developed by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Materials Protection, Accounting, and Control Technologies (MPACT) program to support the development of MC&A approaches for the Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFFF) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Controlled release of free-falling test models

Releasing device, powered by a drill motor through an adjustable speed reducer, has a spinning release head with three retractable spring-loaded fingers. The fingers are retracted by manual triggering of a cable at the motor end of the unit.

A study for development of aerothermodynamic test model materials and fabrication technique

A literature survey, materials reformulation and tailoring, fabrication problems, and materials selection and evaluation for fabricating models to be used with the phase-change technique for obtaining quantitative aerodynamic heat transfer data are presented. The study resulted in the selection of two best materials, stycast 2762 FT, and an alumina ceramic. Characteristics of these materials and detailed fabrication methods are presented.

Effects of reaction control system jet simulation on the stability and control characteristics of a 0.015 scale space shuttle orbiter model tested in the Langley Research Center unitary plan wind tunnel

An experimental investigation was performed in the Langley Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (Test 0A70) to obtain the detailed effects that RCS jet flow interactions with local orbiter flow field have on supersonic stability and control characteristics of the space shuttle orbiter. Six-component force data were obtained through an angle-of-attack range from 15 to 35 degrees at angles of sideslip of 0, +5, and -5 degrees. The test was conducted with yaw jet simulation at free-stream Mach numbers of 2.5 and 4.6, simulating SSV re-entry flight conditions at these Mach numbers. In addition to the basic force measurements, fuselage base pressures and pressures on the non-metric RCS pods were obtained.

Description of a digital computer simulation of an Annular Momentum Control Device (AMCD) laboratory test model

A description of a digital computer simulation of an Annular Momentum Control Device (AMCD) laboratory model is presented. The AMCD is a momentum exchange device which is under development as an advanced control effector for spacecraft attitude control systems. The digital computer simulation of this device incorporates the following models: six degree of freedom rigid body dynamics; rim warp; controller dynamics; nonlinear distributed element axial bearings; as well as power driver and power supply current limits. An annotated FORTRAN IV source code listing of the computer program is included.

Using color-color diagrams to test models for the 'blue bump'

Color-color diagrams are used to study the set of accretion disk plus power-law models and to determine whether they can adequately fit the optical/UV continua of a sample of 34 quasars, and the soft X-ray excesses measured for seven of the sample objects by Masnou et al. (1991). The loci of pure disk models for cos theta is greater than 0 are virtually superimposed on each other regardless of cos theta, demonstrating that a given observed spectrum cannot be described by a unique combination of S and cos theta. The distributions of model and data colors are found to overlap, showing that the disk plus power-law models do fit the distribution of data colors. For six of the seven objects, the soft X-ray excesses may be fit with an accretion disk plus power-law model without requiring the assumption of super-Eddington accretion; this shows the utility of employing Kerr disks.

Model Tests on the Economy and Effectiveness of Helicopter Propellers

The average velocity of helicopter blades relative to the air is greater than that of airplane wings. The helicopter may turn out to be more economical than the airplane wing for extreme velocities of horizontal flight, the airplane then requiring a very great speed range.
