As much of America ramped down for winter break in 2021, a small team composed of members of both the Actinide Materials Processing & Power (AMPP) and the Nuclear Engineering & Nonproliferation (NEN) divisions found themselves in the middle of Nevada performing experiments with chlorine and plutonium, watching the very results they’d long hoped for roll in — just in time for the holidays.
In early February 2022, Laboratory personnel successfully completed the Qualification Design Review (QDR) for the B61-12 Life Extension Program (LEP). QDR is also known as the Delta FDRAAG, short for Delta Final Design Review and Acceptance Group.
When the Laboratory’s Detonator Production team originally completed manufacturing two ALT939 DEV#1 functional cables — the first development units produced in this lot, team members quickly hit an obstacle when electrical testing for these cables failed. Team members sent the cables out for further testing, which revealed the root cause of failure involved the cables’ connectors. Although a challenging issue to resolve, the team worked together and solved the issue ahead of a stipulated deadline, with the cables completed and shipped to support system tests. The team responsible for this challenging work included members from Detonator Production, Nondestructive Testing & Evaluation, and collaborators from Sandia National Laboratories.

The Multi-scenario extreme weather simulator (MEWS) is a stochastic weather generation tool. The MEWS algorithm uses 50 or more years of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) daily summaries [1] for maximum and minimum temperature and NOAA climate norms [2] to calculate historical heat wave and cold snap statistics. The algorithm takes these statistics and shifts them according to multiplication factors provided in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) physical basis technical summary [3] for heat waves.

Associate Laboratory Director for Plutonium Infrastructure Mark Anthony and a procurement team visited three glovebox fabricators the week of Aug. 23, 2022, to discuss equipment procurement options and assess the vendors’ production capability, factory conditions, and safety records. The team determined that all three fabricators can produce complex gloveboxes and meet Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 standards.
