A Comprehensive Approach towards Multi-Objective EMI Filter Design Optimization in High-Frequency SiC-Based Motor Drives

With rapid penetration of high-frequency, highdensity power electronics into the industry, controlling the system generated EMI becomes one of the major design challenges. Designing practical optimized EMI filters require simultaneous consideration of multiple aspects - including electromagnetic couplings, magnetic materials, practical component parasitics and their impacts at high-frequencies, and also the overall manufacturing costs. The multi-dimensional nature of the problem often results in overcompensated designs that hurt the system efficiency and power density. This paper focuses on a comprehensive design platform (developed in MATLAB) towards designing high-density, optimized, highly efficient EMI filters by analyzing the generated noise spectrum and evaluating a vast array of potential solutions before outputting an optimized filter solution. The proposed tool includes database-based component selection, optimal topology selection, multistage filter design, overall optimization for volume, mass, cost and total loss. The proposed filter has been thoroughly evaluated in a PSIM simulation environment emulating the hardware in CRD300DA12EXM3, a 300kW three-phase inverter from Wolfspeed with an RL load representing a motor drive application. Furthermore, a 20kHz switching frequency is chosen and impacts of the motor high-frequency characteristics on the generated EMI noise spectrum of the overall system have been analyzed.

A Unified Off-Board Charging System for Integrated Wired and Wireless EV Charging

This work explores a unified off-board charger approach that enables both wired and wireless charging within a single system architecture. Instead of deploying two independent converters, the proposed configuration switches between an LLC-based operation for wired charging and an LCC-S–type operation for wireless charging by rearranging the excitation of commonly used components. With this reconfiguration, the same switch bridge, resonant elements, and magnetic coupling coils can be utilized in both modes without relying on relays or additional hardware paths. To assess the basic operation of the proposed system, PLECS circuit simulations were performed for both wired and wireless charging modes. A 3.3-kW prototype was also built, and representative experimental results for each mode confirm that the unified converter can operate properly while reducing hardware duplication.

Superconducting Shuttle-Flux Shift Register for Race Logic and Its Applications

Here this paper presents a superconducting, magnetically-coupled, shuttle-flux shift register (SF-SR) that stores single flux quantum (SFQ) pulses. This shift register has a DC bias operating margin of ±34% at 10 GHz, with a power dissipation of 3.6 μW and 38% fewer Josephson junctions (JJs) when scaled up to multiple stages compared to a data flip-flop (DFF) based shift register. The clock input is inductively coupled and is independent from the data input. We then present three applications for our SF-SR. In the first application, we add two non-destructive readout (NDRO) cells to construct a buffer that temporarily stores the temporal information of a series of race logic (RL) pulses. The second application is a pseudo-random number generator based on a linear function shift register (LFSR). The third application is N parallel SF-SRs that can act similar to a deserializer or instead can emulate a single SF-SR of N times higher clock frequency. These three applications motivate deep shift registers with many shifting intervals, which our SF-SR can implement with fewer JJs and lower power consumption compared to DFF-based shift registers.

Ab Initio Quantum Information Processor Design with Single-Molecule Magnets: A Multiscale Modeling Approach (Final Report)

This final report summarizes the team's efforts to develop a multiscale modeling approach that ranges from different levels of ab-initio quantum chemistry simulations to effective models and time-dependent external control, and to use this approach to systematically design quantum information processors with TbPc 2 single-molecule magnets. The impact of the work is two-fold: (i) New quantum chemistry simulation techniques capable of treating complex, multiscale problems such as the TbPc 2 molecule were developed, and (ii) the prospects for building quantum processors based on single-molecule magnets coupled by superconducting transmission line resonators were analyzed. The outcomes of this project revealed that current technology is at the cusp of being able to realize the main components of such a processor, and they highlighted the need to achieve stronger molecule-resonator interactions to enhance the viability of this approach. The multiscale modeling techniques developed during this project are general and transferable to other molecules and will thus have a broad impact on the field of quantum chemistry. Methods for controlling and simulating many coupled qubits developed here will also impact other quantum information technologies.

Development of local hybrid density functionals to treat self-interaction error and many-electron effects

The goal of this project was to improve density functional theory (DFT) for systems where conventional semilocal approximations are limited by self-interaction error (SIE) and by near-degeneracy or strong many-electron effects. While DFT remains the only broadly practical first-principles framework for large-scale materials simulations, its predictive accuracy is often challenged in situations involving stretched bonds, charge transfer, transition-metal chemistry, magnetic couplings, band gaps, and correlated electronic states. This project addressed these limitations by developing physically grounded and numerically robust exchange–correlation functionals that retain the efficiency of modern DFT while extending its predictive scope.

A Rotation Rate for the Planetary-mass Companion DH Tau b

DH Tau b is a young planetary-mass companion orbiting at a projected separation of 320 au from its ∼2 Myr old host star DH Tau. With an estimated mass of 8–22 M{sub Jup} this object straddles the deuterium-burning limit, and might have formed via core or pebble accretion, disk instability, or molecular cloud fragmentation. To shed light on the formation history of DH Tau b, we obtain the first measurement of rotational line broadening for this object using high-resolution (R ∼ 25,000) near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck/NIRSPEC. We measure a projected rotational velocity (v sin i) of 9.6 ± 0.7 km s{sup −1}, corresponding to a rotation rate that is between 9% and 15% of DH Tau b’s predicted breakup speed. This low rotation rate is in good agreement with scenarios in which magnetic coupling between the companion and its circumplanetary disk during the late stages of accretion reduces angular momentum and regulates spin. We compare the rotation rate of DH Tau b to published values for other planetary-mass objects with masses between 0.3 and 20 M{sub Jup} and find no evidence of a correlation between mass and rotation rate in this mass regime. Finally, we search for evidence of individual molecules in DH Tau b’s spectrum and find that it is dominated by CO and H{sub 2}O, with no evidence of the presence of CH{sub 4}. This agrees with expectations given DH Tau b’s relatively high effective temperature (∼2300 K).

Development, fabrication and testing of a magnetically connected plastic vacuum probe surface sampler

The sampler utilizes permanent magnets and soft metal pole pieces to connect the cone/filter assembly to the sampling head and vacuum supply. The cone/filter assembly is packaged in a plastic container and presterilized so that the need for any human contact during the sampling procedure is completely eliminated. Microbiological tests have demonstrated that the sampling efficiency is not affected by the magnetic coupling apparatus and that the probe appears to function as efficiently as the conventional plastic and Sandia vacuum probes.

Regulated dc-to-dc converter for voltage step-up or step-down with input-output isolation

A closed loop regulated dc-to-dc converter employing an unregulated two winding inductive energy storage converter is provided by using a magnetically coupled multivibrator acting as duty cycle generator to drive the converter. The multivibrator is comprised of two transistor switches and a saturable transformer. The output of the converter is compared with a reference in a comparator which transmits a binary zero until the output exceeds the reference. When the output exceeds the reference, the binary output of the comparator drives transistor switches to turn the multivibrator off. The multivibrator is unbalanced so that a predetermined transistor will always turn on first when the binary feedback signal becomes zero.

Research on spacecraft electrical power conversion

The steady state characteristics and starting behavior of some widely used self-oscillating magnetically coupled square wave inverters were studied and the development of LC-tuned square wave inverters is reported. An analysis on high amplitude voltage spikes which occur in dc-to-square-wave parallel converters shows the importance of various circuit parameters for inverter design and for the suppression of spikes. A computerized simulation of an inductor energy storage dc-to-dc converter with closed loop regulators and of a preregulating current step-up converter are detailed. Work continued on the computer aided design of two-winding energy storage dc-to-dc converters.

Disk accretion by magnetic neutron stars

A model for disk accretion by a rotating magnetic neutron star is proposed which includes a detailed description of matter flow in the transition region between the disk and the magnetosphere. It is shown that the disk plasma cannot be completely screened from the stellar magnetic field and that the resulting magnetic coupling between the star and the disk exerts a significant torque on the star. On the assumption that the distortion of the residual stellar field lines threading the disk is limited by reconnection, the total accretion torque on the star is calculated. The calculated torque gives period changes in agreement with those observed in the pulsating X-ray sources and provides a natural explanation of why a fast rotator like Her X-1 has a spin-up rate much below the conventional estimate for slow rotators. It is shown that for such fast rotators, fluctuations in the mass-accretion rate can produce fluctuations in the accretion torque about 100 times larger. For sufficiently fast rotators or, equivalently, for sufficiently low accretion rates, the star experiences a braking torque even while accretion continues and without any mass ejection from its vicinity.
