Detecting unit is capable of measuring leak rates of 10 to the minus 5th power cc/sec or less. Device can be mounted in a carrying case and consists of three vacuum chambers, two pressure gages, and positive seal type control valves.
Detection delay defects are omitted by using helium mass spectrometer leak detector combined with several known procedures. Technique combines carbon dioxide purging, cryogenic separating helium accumulation, and use of carbon dioxide as carrier gas.
System for quantitative determination of leak rates in large pressurized compartments is described. Method uses pressure reference cylinder placed in thermal contact with internal environment of compartment. Construction of equipment and details of operational procedure are reported. Illustration of equipment is included.
Method provides opportunity to effect repairs without compromising integrity of enclosed circuitry or mechanism by loss of atmosphere or by ingestion of foreign matter or gas. It is possible to detect leaks in modules which are sealed while fully evacuated, partially evacuated, or containing some form of gas.
Calculations were made to determine if a cladding failure could be detected in a 100-kW zirconium hydride reactor primary system by monitoring the highly radioactive NaK coolant for the presence of I-131. The system is to be completely sealed. A leak of 0.01 percent from a single fuel pin was postulated. The 0.364-MeV gamma of I-131 could be monitored on an almost continuous basis, while its presence could be varified by using a longer counting time for the 0.638-MeV gamma. A lithium-drifted germanium detector would eliminate radioactive corrosion product interference that could occur with a sodium iodide scintillation detector.
The energy, angular, and latitude distributions of energetic neutrons (up to 2 GeV) leaking from the top of the atmosphere have been calculated. The results agree with the recent measurement of Preszler, Simnett, and White, whose leakage rates were well above the calculation of Lingenfelter. Since the spectrum of Lingenfelter has served for evaluating the cosmic-ray albedo-neutron decay (CRAND) source of energetic protons in Earth's inner radiation belt, it is suggested that the results reported here be used to reevaluate the CRAND contribution.
A leak detector for use with high vacuum seals as used in feedthroughs and hatch covers for manned spacecraft and vacuum systems is described. Two thermistors are used, one exposed directly to vacuum and the other exposed to a secondary chamber formed by the seal being monitored and a second auxiliary seal. Leakage into the secondary chamber causes an unbalance of an electrical bridge circuit in which the thermistors are connected.
Vacuum chamber is used with mass spectrometer to leak-check helical coils of tubing in large systems.
Technique helps locate minute liquid leaks in fittings of petroleum-base fuels.
A method of fabricating an inlet leak for measuring chemically reactive gases is proposed. The method involves the steps of preparing a selected internal surface of a high melting point metal tubing for sealing to a glass tubing. A portion of the glass tubing is inserted into the prepared portion of the metal tubing, the glass tubing having an outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the metal tubing. The inserted glass tubing is sealed to the internal surface of the metal tubing; the glass tubing is drawn under a magnifying device to reduce the entire interior diameter thereof to substantially two microns; and an end portion of the drawing glass tubing is broken away.
Technique involves coating suspected area with water-soluble black paint that gives even, infrared emission. Painted area is warmed with heat gun; an infrared scanner is used to detect cooled spot on jacket exterior. Introduction of atmospheric pressure into jacket intensifies leak jet and improves test sensitivity.
Quantitative leak detector visually demonstrates refrigerant loss from precision volume of large refrigeration system over established period of time from single test point. Mechanical unit is less costly than electronic "sniffers" and is more reliable due to absence of electronic circuits that are susceptible to drift.
Pressure-gage calibration, mass-spectrometer leak detector measures leakage rates up to 300 times greater than its normal limit. Approach utilizes constant-volume displacement characteristic of mechanical vacuum pump. Vacuum system must be small for calibration measurement validity and reduction of outgassing.
Small leaks in vacuum bag can be readily detected by eye, using simple chemical reaction: combination of ammonia and acetic acid vapors to produce cloudy white smoke. Technique has been successfully used to test seam integrity and to identify minute pinholes in vacuum bag used in assembly of ceramic-tile heat shield for Space Shuttle Orbiter.
Solenoid operated modular-leak and shutoff valve has been developed for small portable, automated, mass spectrometer used to measure trace constituents of air or other gases. Valve costs much less to produce than precision needle-in-foil type. Yet its performance closely matches that version.
Heat leak from the surrounding atmosphere during fluid transfer from a spaced shell-insulated vessel for storing liquified gas having an upper gaseous phase, in minimized by forming a relatively wide, shallow blister on the wall of the vessel at the point of transfer line connection. The shell and the opposed walls of the blister have aligned openings whose common axis passes centrally through the blister and is normal to the surfaces of the vessel and shell. A fluid transfer line conduit passing through the shell opening is in fluid-tight connection with the shell and blister wall. The fluid transfer line confines the fluid in a continuous stream. The blister is filled with a heat insulating material which provides a thermal break between the central wall portions of the blister. A connector at the bottom of the vessel comprises a tube extending between the openings in the blister which projects a short distance within the body of liquefied gas and terminates in a reverse bend to prevent backflow of liquid through the pipe.
This paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the effects of leakages in collector and duct work on the system performance of a typical single-family residence solar air heating system. Positive (leakage out) and negative (leakage in) pressure systems were examined. Collector and duct leakage rates were varied from 10 to 30 percent of the system flow rate. Within the range of leakage rates investigated, solar contribution to heated space and domestic hot water loads was found to be reduced up to 30 percent from the no-leak system contribution with duct leakage equally divided between supply and return duct; with supply duct leakage greater than return leakage a reduction of up to 35 percent was noted. The negative pressure system exhibited a reduction in solar contribution somewhat larger than the positive pressure system for the same leakage rates.
Test tool for detecting minute leads in bimetal joints, welds, or other locations employs fine-control valve and hypodermic needle. Test item is connected in conventional manner to helium mass spectrometer tuned to read extremely small amounts of helium gas. Uniqueness of method is ability to detect tiny leaks, through surfaces, not discoverable by gross coverage of test structures by helium gas.
