Extraterrestrial processing and manufacturing of large space systems. Volume 3: Executive summary

Facilities and equipment are defined for refining processes to commercial grade of lunar material that is delivered to a 'space manufacturing facility' in beneficiated, primary processed quality. The manufacturing facilities and the equipment for producing elements of large space systems from these materials and providing programmatic assessments of the concepts are also defined. In-space production processes of solar cells (by vapor deposition) and arrays, structures and joints, conduits, waveguides, RF equipment radiators, wire cables, converters, and others are described.

Introduction: The challenge of optimum integration of propulsion systems and large space structures

A functional matrix of possible propulsion system characteristics for a spacecraft for deployable and assembled spacecraft structures shows that either electric propulsion or low thrust chemical propulsion systems could provide the propulsion required. The trade-off considerations of a single propulsion engine or multiengines are outlined and it is shown that a single point engine is bounded by some upper limit of thrust for assembled spacecraft. The matrix also shows several additional functions that can be provided to the spacecraft if a propulsion system is an integral part of the spacecraft. A review of all of the functions that can be provided for a spacecraft by an integral propulsion system may result in the inclusion of the propulsion for several functions even if no single function were mandatory. Propulsion interface issues for each combination of engines are identified.

Motor Controller System For Large Dynamic Range of Motor Operation

A motor controller system uses a rotary sensor with a plurality of signal conditioning units, coupled to the rotary sensor. Each of these units, which is associated with a particular range of motor output shaft rotation rates, generate a feedback signal indicative of the position of the motor s output shaft. A controller (i) converts a selected motor output shaft rotation rate to a corresponding incremental amount of rotational movement for a selected fixed time period, (ii) selects, at periodic completions of the selected fixed time period, the feedback signal from one of the signal conditioning units for which the particular range of motor output shaft rotation rates associated therewith encompasses the selected motor output shaft rotation rate, and (iii) generates a motor drive signal based on a difference between the incremental amount of rotational movement and the feedback signal from the selected one of the signal conditioning Units.

Clock synchronization of a large multiprocessor system in the presence of malicious faults

An interconnection algorithm is presented for achieving clock synchronization in a multiprocessor system. The system is assumed to be maliciously faulty, i.e., some processors are out of synchronization and lie about their clock state to other intragroup or intergroup processors. A phase-locked clock network design is proposed which groups the clocks in the system into diverse clusters. The clusters are then treated as single clock units from the perspective of the network. The algorithm minimizes the number of interconnections while permitting synchronization of large multiprocessor systems controlling time-critical applications such as aircraft, nuclear reactors and industrial processes.

The dual-momentum control device for large space systems

The dual-momentum control device being studied for large spacecraft consists of two counter-rotating rings, each designated as an annular momentum control device (AMCD). For large rings, flexibility is appreciable and it becomes necessary to account for the distributed nature of the rings in the design of the magnetic bearing controllers. Also, ring behavior is unpredictably sensitive to ring temperature, spin rate, manufacturing imperfections, and other variables. For that reason, an adaptive control system is being sought for ring stabilization and maneuvering. This paper details an original adaptive control methodology for distributed parameter systems and illustrates this technique by application to AMCD stabilization.

Low thrust transfer of Large Space Systems

A study which defined an optimized low-thrust orbit transfer vehicle (OTV) is presented. The objectives of this NASA study were to (1) characterize missions which require or benefit from low-orbit transfer; (2) evaluate and compare candidate low-thrust liquid propulsion orbit transfer vehicle concepts; (3) determine propulsion/system characteristics which have the greatest influence on system suitability/capability; and (4) identify and describe propulsion technology requirements. A computerized optimization procedure was developed to determine the effect of thrust level and transients, number of burns, and payload structure material; a baseline hydrogen/oxygen low thrust OTV configured specifically for orbit transfer of large space systems was defined. Finally, the requirements for the engine for an optimized low thrust stage and the optimum vehicle for low acceleration missions were specified.

Research directions in large scale systems and decentralized control

Control theory provides a well established framework for dealing with automatic decision problems and a set of techniques for automatic decision making which exploit special structure, but it does not deal well with complexity. The potential exists for combining control theoretic and knowledge based concepts into a unified approach. The elements of control theory are diagrammed, including modern control and large scale systems.

Control of large spaceborne antenna systems with flexible booms by mechanical decoupling

A simple practical method for designing antenna-feed attitude control systems for large deployable spaceborne antenna systems with long flexible booms is proposed. The basic idea is to mechanically decouple the antenna-feed from the boom so that the feed-attitude control system can be designed without taking the boom dynamics into consideration, thus avoiding a complex control problem involving an infinite-dimensional distributed parameter system. The validity of the proposed method is substantiated by analytical and numerical studies using a mathematical model for the flexible boom which could undergo both bending and torsional vibrations. This approach leads to simple antenna-feed attitude control systems which are amenable to physical implementation.
