Best Practices for Renewable Energy Installations in the National Parks

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and National Park Service (NPS) have partnered to support the development and utilization of renewable energy technology at federal facilities and on federal lands. FEMP provides technical support to NPS on renewable energy projects to identify and generate significant cost savings and efficiency benefits, investigate opportunities to reduce carbon footprint and/or achieve carbon neutrality, and improve resilience to NPS-owned facilities and sites. The purpose of this report is to support NPS staff as they evaluate whether and how to use renewable energy technologies in park operations.

The Intrinsic Source Constructor Package: Installation and Use

The main changes in the ISC 3.0.0 release are: • Movement of MCNP source utility functions from MISC into ISC • Addition of data and data handling routines for (α,n) sources and a new utility, MESA, that uses these. The sources4c data comes from a variety of academic papers and LANL theoretical calculations. See MESA documentation for further information. • Refactor of all data save and load operations to a single set of templatized functions.

GNSS Installation at the ARM Southern Great Plains (SGP) Atmospheric Observatory Field Campaign Report

GRUAN, the GCOS Reference Upper Air Network, is an international reference observing network of sites measuring essential climate variables above Earth's surface, designed to fill an important gap in the current global observing system. GRUAN’s objectives are to (1) provide long-term, high-quality climate records, (2) constrain and calibrate data from more spatially comprehensive global observing systems (including satellites and current radiosonde networks), and (3) fully characterize the properties of the atmospheric column.

Roadmap for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Cybersecurity: A vision for improving cyber maturity of distributed and utility-scale solar energy installations

As the solar energy sector continues to expand, its integration into the broader energy infrastructure presents both unprecedented opportunities and new risks. The increasing reliance on digital technologies and interconnected systems in solar energy creates an expanded attack surface for motivated cyber adversaries. Cyberattacks have the potential to cause disruptions in energy production, damage to equipment, financial losses, and compromises in national security. Therefore, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures is paramount to protect the integrity, availability, confidentiality, and access control of solar energy systems. However, there are still key gaps and challenges to be addressed in industry and research, which stakeholders must race to address as they combat a growing number of real-world cyber incidents that affect solar energy systems and a growing number of vulnerabilities discovered and disclosed in key types of equipment. This roadmap explore the current state of solar PV cybersecurity and the gaps and challenges still to be addressed.

Soft X-ray/VUV diagnostic upgrades and installation on NSTX-U (Final Report)

Due to repeated delays in the schedule for the NSTX-U upgrade as well as the emergence of COVID and subsequent personnel loss during the granting period, the scope of the award was reduced to completing the refurbishment and upgrade of the JHU soft X-ray (SXR) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) diagnostics for the NSTX-U experiment.

On the Possibility of Installing the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron of the Electron Ion Collider in the AGS Tunnel

This report describes electron injector concepts for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) using the tunnel of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of Brookhaven National Laboratory which is to be compared to the RCS in the RHIC tunnel or a new ring in a new tunnel. Possible designs of the electron booster synchrotron, the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) with good spin transparency with electron energies of up to 10 GeV and 18 GeV and placing the injector linac in the adjacent Building 912 for are worked out. The main reason for studying such options is the expectation that it will reduce the Electron Ion Collider injector cost because no civil construction is required, the machine is very compact, and existing infrastructure can be used. The design of an RCS with a top energy of 10 GeV with good spin transparency is quite conventional. However, for collider operation with 18 GeV electrons, this option would require accelerating the 10 GeV beam in the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) to 18 GeV and relying on the Sokolov Ternov self-polarization at 18 GeV in the ESR. Solutions for an RCS with Electron energies of up to 18 GeV with or without spin transparency are found to be possible but push the envelope of conventional magnet technology.

Heavy Duty Natural Gas Single Cylinder Research Engine Installation, Commissioning, and Baseline Testing

Natural Gas (NG) Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) are a promising alternative to diesel engines for on-road heavy-duty applications to reduce greenhouse gas and harmful pollutant emissions. NG engines have not been widely adopted due to the lower thermal efficiency compared with diesel engine counterparts. To develop the base knowledge required to reach the desired efficiency, a Single Cylinder Engine (SCE) is the most effective platform to acquire reliable and repeatable data. A SCE test cell was developed using a Cummins 15-liter six-cylinder heavy-duty engine block modified to fire one cylinder (2.5-liter displacement). A Woodward Large Engine Control Module (LECM) is integrated to permit implementation of real-time advanced combustion control. Intake and exhaust characteristics, fuel composition, and exhaust gas recirculated substitution rate (EGR) are fully adjustable. A high-speed data acquisition system acquires in-cylinder, intake, and exhaust pressure for combustion analysis. The baseline testing shows reliable and consistent results for engine thermal efficiency, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), and coefficient of variance of the IMEP over a wide range of operating conditions while achieving effective control of all engine control and operation variables. This test cell will be used to conduct a research program to develop new and innovative control algorithms and CFD optimized combustion chamber designs, allowing ultra-high efficiency and low emissions for NG ICE heavy-duty on-road applications.

Analyze Landscape of Solar Panel Installations and Retirements - Solar Prize Round 7 (CRADA CRD-24-30364 Final Report)

By projecting the solar capacity until 2050 at a granular, census tract level, we aim to define Participant's Total Addressable Market for Electra's registration service and examine the volumes and locations of panels reaching end-of-life with corresponding state policies and planned recycling locales. This dual-faceted data will be pivotal in developing a sustainable, per-watt pricing strategy for our state central funds and key areas for collection hubs, ensuring these volumes can adequately support our collection, hauling, and recycling provider network.

Method using a electrostatic generator/motor rotor electrode system suitable for installation on the outer surface of an EMB rotor

Electrostatic generator electrodes mounted on the outer surface of a fiber-composite rotor. The conducting strips are mounted with a slight tilt in angle such that the electrodes will experience no tension or compression effects as the rotor spins up or slows down. The compression would come about from effects associated with the Poisson Ratio. This change can eliminate any metal fatigue or loss of bonding that might have arisen if the electrodes were to be aligned with the axis.
