Earth System Digital Twins (ESDT) Workshop

"The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is hosting an Earth System Digital Twins (ESDT) workshop in collaboration with NASA’s Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) Program. The event will bring together science and technology communities to explore the use and benefits of ESDT and their enabling technologies. This workshop is one of the first steps in developing ESDT reference use cases and corresponding technology needs to guide the development of ESDT technologies that will be needed by NASA Earth Science within the next five to ten years. The workshop goals are to: • identify driving Earth science use cases that will benefit from unique ESDT capabilities • identify emerging technologies that will enable such ESDT systems within the next five to ten years • understand opportunities and technologies for federating ESDTs and creating more capable systems"

Nickel(II) Metal Complexes as Optically Addressable Qubit Candidates

The inherent atomic level structural control of synthetic chemistry enables the creation of qubits, the base units of a quantum information science system, designed for a target application. For quantum sensing applications, enabling optical read-out of spin in tunable molecular systems, akin to defect-based systems, would be transformative. This approach would bring together molecular tunability with optical read-out technology. In theory, nickel ions in octahedral symmetry meet all the criteria for optical readout of spin. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, there are no pulse EPR studies on Ni 2+ molecules. We identified two compounds featuring highly symmetric Ni 2+ centers, thereby engendering weak zero-field splitting to enable EPR addressability:[Ni(phen) 3 ](BF 4 ) 2 (1) and [Ni(pyr 3 ) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 (2) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; pyr 3 = tris-2-pyridyl-methane). Crucially, these complexes feature the requisite strong field ligands to enable emission for optical addressability. We extracted axial zero-field splitting parameters of D = +0.9 cm –1 and +2.7 cm –1 for 1 and 2, respectively, enabling pulse EPR measurements. Both compounds produce emission at λ max = 938–944 nm. Furthermore, the aggregate of these results expands the catalogue of qubit materials to Ni 2+ -based compounds and offers a future pathway for optical readout of these molecules.

Variational Quantum Algorithms for Semidefinite Programming

A semidefinite program (SDP) is a particular kind of convex optimization problem with applications in operations research, combinatorial optimization, quantum information science, and beyond. In this work, we propose variational quantum algorithms for approximately solving SDPs. For one class of SDPs, we provide a rigorous analysis of their convergence to approximate locally optimal solutions, under the assumption that they are weakly constrained (i.e., N$\gg$M, where N is the dimension of the input matrices and M is the number of constraints). We also provide algorithms for a more general class of SDPs that requires fewer assumptions. Finally, we numerically simulate our quantum algorithms for applications such as MaxCut, and the results of these simulations provide evidence that convergence still occurs in noisy settings.
