Low arc drop hybrid mode thermionic converter

The hybrid mode operation for the reduction of plasma drops is being investigated. This report discusses the results obtained from two molybdenum emitter converters. One converter had a molybdenum collector and the other a nickel collector. The molybdenum collector converter was operated in a hybrid mode (at an interelectrode distance of 1.7 mm) and produced a minimum barrier index of 1.96 eV at an emitter temperature of 1500 K. The arc drop was calculated to be 0.14 eV, using the published results for a molybdenum collector. On the other hand, the nickel collector converter was operated in a conventional ignited mode (at an interelectrode distance of 0.5 mm) and produced a minimum barrier index of 2.1 eV at an emitter temperature of 1700 K. It is tentatively concluded that a large-gap operation of the hybrid mode converter permits the diffusion of cesium ions to a distance in the order of one millimeter for an effective neutralization of electron space charge. By employing a low work function collector (1.55 eV) in a hybrid mode converter with an arc drop of 0.14 eV, it appears that a barrier index as low as 1.69 eV could be achieved.

Muscle metaboreceptor modulation of cutaneous active vasodilation

PURPOSE: Isometric handgrip exercise in hyperthermia has been shown to reduce cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) by inhibiting the cutaneous active vasodilator system. METHODS: To identify whether this response was initiated by muscle metaboreceptors, in seven subjects two 3-min bouts of isometric handgrip exercise in hyperthermia were performed, followed by 2 min of postexercise ischemia (PEI). An index of forearm skin blood flow (laser-Doppler flowmetry) was measured on the contralateral arm at an unblocked site and at a site at which adrenergic vasoconstrictor function was blocked via bretylium iontophoresis to reveal active cutaneous vasodilator function unambiguously. Sweat rate was measured via capacitance hygrometry, CVC was indexed from the ratio of skin blood flow to mean arterial pressure and was expressed as a percentage of maximal CVC at that site. In normothermia, neither isometric exercise nor PEI affected CVC (P > 0.05). RESULTS: The first bout of isometric handgrip exercise in hyperthermia reduced CVC at control sites and this reduction persisted through PEI (pre-exercise: 59.8 +/- 5.4, exercise: 49.8 +/- 4.9, PEI: 49.7 +/- 5.3% of maximum; both P < 0.05), whereas there were no significant changes in CVC at the bretylium treated sites. The succeeding bout of isometric exercise in hyperthermia significantly reduced CVC at both untreated (pre-exercise: 59.0 +/- 4.8, exercise: 47.3 +/- 4.0, PEI: 50.1 +/- 4.1% of maximum; both P < 0.05) and bretylium treated sites (pre-exercise: 61.4 +/- 7.3, exercise: 50.6 +/- 5.1, PEI: 53.9 +/- 6.0% of maximum, both P < 0.05). At both sites, CVC during PEI was lower than during the pre-exercise period (P < 0.05). Sweat rate rose significantly during both bouts of isometric exercise and remained elevated during PEI. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the reduction in CVC during isometric exercise in hyperthermia, including the inhibition of the active vasodilator system, is primarily mediated by muscle metaboreceptors, whereas central command or muscle mechanoreceptors have less influence.

Evaluating the impacts of Variable Message Signs on Airport Curbside Performance Using Microsimulation

Curbs play a vital role in facilitating vehicle access and egress for individuals at airports. Inefficiently allocating this resource hinders airport accessibility and productivity, resulting in congestion, longer travel times, and increased pollution. As airport demand fluctuates throughout the day and grows over time, airports face intensified curbside pressure. Yet, curb management research is significantly less robust at airports than in urban areas. Given the unbalanced nature of airport demand—riders tend to arrive simultaneously at specific entrances at certain hours—Variable Message Sign (VMS) arises as a cost-effective technology to divert vehicles from congested to underutilized curbs. Still, VMS implementation faces a significant challenge. Historically, airports have managed VMS heuristically and by intuition rather than an evidence-based approach. This research investigates the impacts of implementing VMS on curb performance at airports. By considering different driver compliance rates (DCR), we aim to determine when the sign should be turned on and off to diverge traffic to avoid undesired externalities while enhancing curb performance. Using a validated agent-based microsimulation model, VISSIM, we analyzed the Seattle-Tacoma (SeaTac) Airport as a case study. We modeled sixteen VMS management scenarios and a baseline where the message sign is not displayed, diverging vehicles between the departures and arrivals access levels at four different moments (early morning, morning, afternoon, and late night). We quantified the effects of VMS using seven metrics, including curb productivity index (CPI), curb accessibility (CA), queue length, queue duration, delay, vehicle counts, and emissions. The results of each scenario were compared against the baseline using absolute and relative changes and Repeated Measures ANOVA. Overall, VMS improved curb performance and traffic conditions at the airport, reducing emissions by 14.8% to 8.9%. Moreover, significant reductions in queue length (1,150 ft to 100 ft) and duration (15 to 144 minutes) were observed in the sending link under all VMS policies. However, impacts on the receiving link varied based on congestion, with significant increases in queue duration (9.8 to 24 min) when congested but no substantial changes in free flow. Notably, diverging vehicles to congested links resulted in non-significant results, and activating late and deactivating late VMS affected curb productivity (-5.8% to -61.4%), curb accessibility (-16.5% to -25.8%), cumulative counts (-33.4% to -59.4%), and vehicle delay (95.98% to 594.3%). Activating VMS before congestion begins in the sending link and deactivating before a queue forms in the receiving link yield the most significant improvements: 8.1% to 10.1% in CPI, 9.4% to9.6% in CA, -29.3% to -77.9% in total delay, -11.6% to -13.9% in total emissions, and 101% to 103% in cumulative counts. As the analysis was made with a wide range of time periods, access levels, driver compliance rates, and scenarios, we believe our findings can provide valuable insights into how airports should manage VMS. Our work introduces a novel approach to the scientific airport literature, as some of our metrics were previously unexplored. Additionally, we propose a methodology that other airports can adopt to maximize their curb performance.

Integrin α5 mediates intrinsic cisplatin resistance in three-dimensional nasopharyngeal carcinoma spheroids via the inhibition of phosphorylated ERK /caspase-3 induced apoptosis

Highlights: • Highly expressed integrin α5 was observed in in vitro three-dimensional NPC spheroids. • The overexpression of integrin α5 in NPC spheroids demonstrated a correlation with intrinsic cisplatin resistance. • The integrin α5-induced intrinsic cisplatin resistance was mediated by an inactivation of ERK/caspase-3-induced apoptosis. • ATN-161, an integrin α5β1 inhibitor, reduced integrin α5 expression and increased sensitization to cisplatin in NPC spheroids. • ATN-161 reversed the intrinsic cisplatin resistance in NPC spheroids by reactivating ERK/caspase-3-induced apoptosis. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) originates in the nasopharynx epithelium. Although concurrent chemoradiation therapy followed by chemotherapy is considered as an effective treatment, there is substantial drug resistance in locally advanced NPC patients. One major contributor to the chemoresistance includes aberrant expression of cell adhesion molecules, such as integrin α and β subunits, giving rise to cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of integrin α5 on the development of intrinsic cisplatin resistance in NPC and the associated underlying mechanisms using in vitro three-dimensional (3D) spheroid models, as well as induced cisplatin-resistant NPC (NPCcisR). We demonstrated that established 3D highly- (5-8F) and lowly- (6-10B) metastatic NPC spheroids overexpressed integrin α5 and aggravated their resistance to cisplatin. Besides, enhanced integrin α5 resulted in substantially reduced growth, corresponding to G{sub 0}/G{sub 1} and G{sub 2}/M cell cycle arrest. In addition, 5-8FcisR and 6-10BcisR cells in 3D forms synergistically strengthened endurance of their spheroids to cisplatin treatment as observed by increased resistance index (RI) and decreased apoptosis. Mechanistically, the aberrantly expressed integrin α5 decreased drug susceptibility in NPC spheroids by inactivating ERK and inhibition of caspase-3 inducing apoptosis. Furthermore, the effect of integrin α5 inducing intrinsic resistance was verified via treatment with ATN-161, a peptide inhibitor for integrin α5β1. The results showed dramatic reduction in integrin α5 expression, reversal of ERK phosphorylation and caspase-3 cleavage, together with elevated cisplatin sensitivity, indicating regulation of innate drug resistance via integrin α5. Taken together, our findings suggest that integrin α5 could act as a promising target to enhance the chemotherapeutic sensitivity in NPC.

Estimates of leaf area index from spectral reflectance of wheat under different cultural practices and solar angle

The influence of management practices and solar illumination angle on the leaf area index (LAI) was estimated from measurements of wheat canopy reflectance evaluated by two methods, a regression formula and an indirect technique. The date of planting and the time of irrigation in relation to the stage of plant growth were found to have significant effects on the development of leaves in spring wheat. A reduction in soil moisture adversely affected both the duration and magnitude of the maximum LAI for late planting dates. In general, water stress during vegetative stages resulted in a reduction in maximum LAI, while water stress during the reproductive period shortened the duration of green LAI in spring wheat. Canopy geometry and solar angle also affected the spectral properties of the canopies, and hence the estimated LAI. Increase in solar zenith angles resulted in a general increase in estimated LAI obtained from both methods.

Effects of forearm bier block with bretylium on the hemodynamic and metabolic responses to handgrip

We tested the hypothesis that a reduction in sympathetic tone to exercising forearm muscle would increase blood flow, reduce muscle acidosis, and attenuate reflex responses. Subjects performed a progressive, four-stage rhythmic handgrip protocol before and after forearm bier block with bretylium as forearm blood flow (Doppler) and metabolic (venous effluent metabolite concentration and (31)P-NMR indexes) and autonomic reflex responses (heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic nerve traffic) were measured. Bretylium inhibits the release of norepinephrine at the neurovascular junction. Bier block increased blood flow as well as oxygen consumption in the exercising forearm (P < 0.03 and P < 0.02, respectively). However, despite this increase in flow, venous K(+) release and H(+) release were both increased during exercise (P < 0.002 for both indexes). Additionally, minimal muscle pH measured during the first minute of recovery with NMR was lower after bier block (6.41 +/- 0.08 vs. 6.20 +/- 0.06; P < 0.036, simple effects). Meanwhile, reflex effects were unaffected by the bretylium bier block. The results support the conclusion that sympathetic stimulation to muscle during exercise not only limits muscle blood flow but also appears to limit anaerobiosis and H(+) release, presumably through a preferential recruitment of oxidative fibers.

Results of the NASA/General Electric Experimental Clean Combustor Program

The NASA/General Electric Experimental Clean Combustor Program is a multi-year, major contract effort. Primary program objectives are the generation of technology for development of advanced commercial CTOL engines with lower exhaust emissions than current aircraft and, demonstrations of this technology in a full-scale CF6-50C engine in 1976. This paper describes pollution and performance goals, Phase I and II test results and Phase III hardware, pollution sampling techniques and test plans. Pollution results are presented in emission index and Environmental Protection Agency 1979 Standard Parameters (EPAP). Best results were obtained with a double annular combustor concept. This concept, which incorporates multistage burning, produced EPAP values extrapolated to CF6-50C engine conditions for CO, HC, and NOx of 3.3, 0.3 and 4.5, respectively. These represent respective CO, HC and NOx percentage reductions of 69, 93 and 42%, compared to current CF6-50 engine values. The combustor also met development engine performance requirements.

Review of 5 years of a combined dietary and physical fitness intervention for control of serum cholesterol

A chart review covering the first 5 years of clinical experience with a combined dietary and exercise intervention program for the reduction of hypercholesterolemia at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration headquarters demonstrated the program's success in maintaining high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels while significantly lowering total serum cholesterol levels. This combined program also resulted in improved ratios of total serum cholesterol to HDL-C and lowered levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, thus further reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program was developed after it was determined that although dietary intervention alone improved total cholesterol levels, it often resulted in a more than proportionate decrease in HDL-C and a worsening of the ratio of cholesterol to HDL-C. An approach was needed that would positively affect all factors of the lipid profile. The findings from the program indicate that reduction of cardiovascular risk can be accomplished easily and effectively at the worksite through dietary intervention, personal monitoring, and a reasonable exercise program.

Morphology‐controlled synthesis of multi‐metal‐based spinel oxide nanocatalysts and their performance for oxygen reduction

Abstract We present a one‐pot colloidal synthesis method for producing monodisperse multi‐metal (Co, Mn, and Fe) spinel nanocrystals (NCs), including nanocubes, nano‐octahedra, and concave nanocubes. This study explores the mechanism of morphology control, showcasing the pivotal roles of metal precursors and capping ligands in determining the exposed crystal planes on the NC surface. The cubic spinel NCs, terminated with exclusive {100}‐facets, demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media compared to their octahedral and concave cubic counterparts. Specifically, at 0.85 V, (CoMn)Fe 2 O 4 spinel oxide nanocubes achieve a high mass activity of 23.9 A/g and exhibit excellent stability, highlighting the promising ORR performance associated with {100}‐facets of multi‐metal spinel oxides over other low‐index and high‐index facets. Motivated by exploring the correlation between ORR performance and surface atom arrangement (active sites), surface element composition, as well as other factors, this study introduces a prospective approach for shape‐controlled synthesis of advanced spinel oxide NCs. It underscores the significance of catalyst shape control and suggests potential applications as nonprecious metal ORR electrocatalysts.

Processing Methods Established To Fabricate Porous Oxide Ceramic Spheres for Thermal Barrier Coating Applications

As gas turbine technology advances, the demand for efficient engines and emission reduction requires a further increase in operating temperatures, but combustion temperatures are currently limited by the temperature capability of the engine components. The existing thermal barrier coating (TBC) technology does not provide sufficient thermal load reduction at a 3000 F (1649 C) operating condition. Advancement in thermal barrier coating technology is needed to meet this aggressive goal. One concept for improving thermal barrier coating effectiveness is to design coating systems that incorporate a layer that reflects or scatters photon radiation. This can be achieved by using porous structures. The refractive index mismatch between the solid and pore, the pore size, and the pore density can be engineered to efficiently scatter photon radiation. Under NASA s Ultra-Efficient Engine Technology (UEET) Program, processing methods to fabricate porous ceramic spheres suitable for scattering photon radiation at elevated temperatures have been established. A straightforward templating process was developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center that requires no special processing equipment. The template was used to define particle shape, particle size, and pore size. Spherical organic cation exchange resins were used as a structure-directing template. The cation exchange resins have dual template capabilities that can produce different pore architectures. This process can be used to fabricate both metal oxide and metal carbide spheres.

Electrical injection and transport in Teflon-diluted hole transport materials

Diluting small molecule organic semiconductor hole transport materials with Teflon AF (TAF) dramatically increases their thermal/morphological stability while counterintuitively also increasing the current density in hole-only diodes. Here, we explore the origin of this current enhancement in co-evaporated blends of TAF and N,N'-Di(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPD) and find that it results from improved hole injection and not from a mobility enhancement due to semiconductor dilution effects. Whereas electroabsorption measurements indicate that an interface dipole shift of up to 0.5 eV (depending on TAF concentration) aides hole injection at the indium-tin-oxide anode, time-of-flight and temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements show that the mobility of 25 vol% TAF:NPD blends decreases by roughly an order of magnitude relative to neat NPD despite having slightly lower energetic disorder. For comparison, diluting with 25 vol% high density polyethylene achieves a similar reduction in energetic disorder but only decreases the mobility by a factor of two. Furthermore, these results highlight the tradeoff between reducing energetic disorder and frustrating percolation in diluted organic semiconductors, and represent a step toward thermally-evaporated polymer-small molecule composites that maintain high mobility while offering improved morphological stability and lower refractive index for organic light emitting diodes.

Inventory of forest and rangeland and detection of forest stress

The author has identified the following significant results. Disturbances in a forest environment that cause reductions in forest area, timber volume, and timber growth can be detected on ERTS-1 combined color composites. However, detection depends on comparing a conventional aerial photograph taken at some base year with an ERTS-1 image taken in some subsequent year. In a test made on the Atlanta site, 1:63,360 scale aerial photo index sheets made in 1966 were compared with ERTS-1 image 1264-15445 (April 1973). Five factors were found important to detection reliability: (1) the quality of the imagery; (2) the season of the imagery; (3) the size of the disturbed area; (4) the number of years since the disturbances; and (5) the type of cutting treatment. Of 209 disturbances verified on aerial photography, 165 (or approximately 80%) were detected on the ERTS-1 image by one independent interpreter. Improved training and additional experience in using this low resolution imagery should improve detection. Of the two seasons of data studies (fall and early spring), early spring is the best for detecting land use changes. Generally speaking, winter, early spring, and early summer are the best times of year for detecting forest disturbances.

Impacts of corn intercropping with soybean, peanut and millet through different planting patterns on population dynamics and community diversity of insects under fertilizer reduction

Corn is one of the key grain crops in China and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides seriously damages the ecological environment in fields. To explore a more scientific and reasonable way to plant corn and simultaneously reduce the overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the impact of corn intercropping with soybean, peanut, and millet, respectively, through five planting patterns, including three intercropping patterns (2 corn rows to 2, 3 and 4 rows of soybean/peanut or 2, 4 and 6 millet rows, respectively) and two monoculture patterns of corn and soybean, peanut or millet under normal (600 kg/ha) and reduced (375 kg/ha) levels of NPK (N:P 2 O 5 :K 2 O = 15:15:15) fertilization on the population abundance and community diversity of insects, leaf nutrients, and induced plant hormones jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) was studied in 2018 and 2019. The results showed that the insect community indexes of the species number ( S ), the diversity index ( H ), and the uniformity index ( E ) generally increased under intercropping and were significantly higher than those under corn monoculture. The prevalence of Asian corn borer ( Ostrinia furnacalis ) on the intercropping corn plants decreased by based on the average of seven surveys per year for each treatment 2.9 to 17 heads per 30 plants compared with that on the monoculture corn plants. The number of natural enemy insect species on corn plants under intercropping was significantly higher than that under corn monoculture. That is, intercropping may decrease the population of Asian corn borers by increasing S , H , E , and natural enemy insect species (NEI). Moreover, intercropping type and fertilizer level significantly affected corn leaf nutrient contents. Compared with the normal fertilizer level, fertilizer reduction significantly reduced the foliar contents of amino acids, soluble protein, and soluble sugar in corn plants. In addition, corn–soybean and corn–peanut intercropping significantly increased the three nutrient contents in corn leaves compared with corn monoculture. In terms of corn nutrients, intercropping could compensate for the effects of fertilizer reduction. The foliar content of JA in corn–soybean intercropping was significantly higher than in corn monoculture. Under corn–soybean and corn–peanut intercropping, SA was significantly lower than under corn monoculture. Overall, intercropping, not fertilizer reduction, can significantly increase insect community diversity while reducing the population abundances of the key insect pest species on corn plants. Intercropping reduced the SA content, increased amino acids and thus reduced the susceptibility of corn to the pest insects.

Mechanical suppression of invasive Northern Pike in Box Canyon Reservoir, Washington

Abstract Objective Northern Pike Esox lucius recently invaded Box Canyon Reservoir, Washington, expanding to over 10,000 individuals by 2011. To limit further impacts, a significant reduction in population abundance was required. Project objectives were to reduce relative abundance (catch per unit effort [CPUE]) to less than 1.7 Northern Pike/net (87% reduction) in the core area and to less than 0.5 Northern Pike/net in the northern reservoir section within 3 years and then maintain those abundance targets thereafter. Methods Using gill nets, we conducted intensive annual (2012–2018) suppression each spring, focusing on spawning aggregations in shallow (<2-m), flooded habitats. To evaluate CPUE, a standardized spring pike index netting (SPIN) survey was conducted annually in May and compared to suppression netting CPUE. Result In total, 17,464 Northern Pike were removed in 4868 net sets, with 92.9% captured in the first 3 years, limiting future recruitment. Mean SPIN CPUE in the core area declined from a presuppression (2011) high of 13.2 Northern Pike/net to less than 1.0 Northern Pike/net by 2014. Effort was reduced by up to 80% as the project transitioned from the initial suppression phase (2012–2014) to a control phase (2015–2018), which explored the minimum effort required to maintain abundance targets. A significant rebound in CPUE occurred from 2017 to 2018, indicating that over 267 net sets annually may be required for long-term control. Although the mean CPUE (±95% confidence interval) increased slightly in 2018 (0.6 ± 0.5 Northern Pike/net), the target abundance in the core area was achieved annually from 2013 to 2018. Changes in suppression CPUE reflected those observed in SPIN surveys, further validating the survey and corroborating abundance trends. Conclusion Results demonstrate that the suppression of Northern Pike in large, complex waters is feasible but requires a substantial long-term commitment. We expect the suppression of this invasive species to become standard practice outside of its native range. The methodology and equipment described here could be applied directly or modified by others to suppress Northern Pike.

Integration of polyurethane meniscus scaffold during ACL revision is not reliable at 5 years despite favourable clinical outcome

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome at 5‐year follow‐up of a one‐step procedure combining anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and partial meniscus replacement using a polyurethane scaffold for the treatment of symptomatic patients with previously failed ACL reconstruction and partial medial meniscectomy. Moreover, the implanted scaffolds have been evaluated by MRI protocol in terms of morphology, volume, and signal intensity. Methods Twenty patients with symptomatic knee laxity after failed ACL reconstruction and partial medial meniscectomy underwent ACL revision combined with polyurethane‐based meniscal scaffold implant. Clinical assessment at 2‐ and 5‐year follow‐ups included VAS, Tegner Activity Score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and the Lysholm Score. MRI evaluation of the scaffold was performed according to the Genovese scale with quantification of the scaffold’s volume at 1‐ and 5‐year follow‐ups. Results All scores revealed clinical improvement as compared with the preoperative values at the 2‐ and 5‐year follow‐ups. However, a slight, but significant reduction of scores was observed between 2 and 5 years. Concerning the MRI assessment, a significant reduction of the scaffold’s volume was observed between 1 and 5 years. Genovese Morphology classification at 5 years included two complete resorptions (Type 3) and all the remaining patients had irregular morphology (Type 2). With regard to the Genovese Signal at the 5‐year follow‐up, three were classified as markedly hyperintense (Type 1), 15 as slightly hyperintense (Type 2), and two as isointense (Type 1). Conclusion Simultaneous ACL reconstruction and partial meniscus replacement using a polyurethane scaffold provides favourable clinical outcomes in the treatment of symptomatic patients with previously failed ACL reconstruction and partial medial meniscectomy at 5 years. However, MRI evaluation suggests that integration of the scaffold is not consistent. Level of evidence Level IV.

Combining field and remote sensing data to estimate forest canopy damage and recovery following tropical cyclones across tropical regions

Abstract As tropical forests cycle the most water and carbon, it is crucial to understand the short- and long-term effects of intensifying cyclones on these ecosystems. Soil nutrient status has been shown to moderate forest cyclone responses using field litterfall measurements, but litterfall is one of the multiple cyclone impact metrtics, which may or may not be correlated with one another or with site nutrients. We used remotely sensed vegetation indices to quantify immediate damage and two-year recovery for 42 cases across nine tropical forests in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Australia, and Taiwan affected by 12 cyclones between 2004 and 2017. We tested whether changes in leaf area index (LAI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) correlated with changes in litterfall observations and how changes varied with total soil phosphorus (P) concentrations across regions. We compared cyclone-induced changes and recovery of LAI and EVI to litterfall observations compiled in a pantropical meta-analysis. We found large variation in changes in LAI and EVI across forests, with the greatest reductions in LAI (−77%) and EVI (−77%) in Mexico (Jalisco) and Puerto Rico, respectively. LAI ( r = −0.52) and EVI ( r = −0.60) changes correlated with those in litterfall across cases. Post-cyclone data showed recovery of LAI by four months, EVI by two months, and litterfall by ten months. We detected larger changes in LAI and EVI in forests with higher soil P, but these relationships were not significant when accounting for cyclone and site as random effects. Principal component analyses indicated a regional clustering of cases related to their contrasting cyclone regimes, with the frequency and intensity of cyclone events negatively correlated. Overall, remote sensing observations complement but do not substitute for ground observations that reveal cyclone damage and post-cyclone recovery in tropical forests, and soil phosphorus moderates some but not all metrics of stability in response to cyclones.

Asymmetric response of Amazon forest water and energy fluxes to wet and dry hydrological extremes reveals onset of a local drought-induced tipping point

Understanding the effects of intensification of Amazon basin hydrological cycling—manifest as increasingly frequent floods and droughts—on water and energy cycles of tropical forests is essential to meeting the challenge of predicting ecosystem responses to climate change, including forest “tipping points”. Here, we investigated the impacts of hydrological extremes on forest function using 12+ years of observations (between 2001–2020) of water and energy fluxes from eddy covariance, along with associated ecological dynamics from biometry, at the Tapajós National Forest. Measurements encompass the strong 2015–2016 El Niño drought and La Niña 2008–2009 wet events. We found that the forest responded strongly to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO): Drought reduced water availability for evapotranspiration ( ET ) leading to large increases in sensible heat fluxes ( H ). Partitioning ET by an approach that assumes transpiration ( T ) is proportional to photosynthesis, we found that water stress-induced reductions in canopy conductance ( G s ) drove T declines partly compensated by higher evaporation ( E ). By contrast, the abnormally wet La Niña period gave higher T and lower E , with little change in seasonal ET . Both El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events resulted in changes in forest structure, manifested as lower wet-season leaf area index. However, only during El Niño 2015–2016, we observed a breakdown in the strong meteorological control of transpiration fluxes (via energy availability and atmospheric demand) because of slowing vegetation functions (via shutdown of G s and significant leaf shedding). Drought-reduced T and G s , higher H and E , amplified by feedbacks with higher temperatures and vapor pressure deficits, signaled that forest function had crossed a threshold, from which it recovered slowly, with delay, post-drought. In conclusion, identifying such tipping point onsets (beyond which future irreversible processes may occur) at local scale is crucial for predicting basin-scale threshold-crossing changes in forest energy and water cycling, leading to slow-down in forest function, potentially resulting in Amazon forests shifting into alternate degraded states.

Simple descriptor for contextual classification of hyperdimensional remotely sensed spectral data

An extended CIE transformation was employed to deal with data reduction problems of hyperdimensional spectral data for NASA airborne and Shuttle imaging spectrometers. A simple descriptor was found to be very effective in analyzing spectral data covers from 0.4 to 2.4 microns. Results reveal contextual properties of minerals, vegetation, and crops. It provides a means to monitor seasonal growth variations for crops. It can also serve as pseudocolor indexing for imaging spectrometer imagery extended beyond the visible range.
