High-efficiency silicon solar cells

Fabrication and characterization of high-efficiency metal insulator, n-p (MINP) cells is described. Particular attention was paid to development of measurement methods for surface recombination and density of surface states. A modified Rosier test structure was used successfully for density of surface states. Silicon oxide and silicon nitride passivants were studied. Heat treatment after plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of silicon nitride was shown to be beneficial. A more optimum emitter concentration profile was modeled.

A high-efficiency acoustic chamber and the anomalous sample rotation

A high efficiency acoustic chamber for the levitation and manipulation of liquid or molten samples in a microgravity environment has been developed. The chamber uses two acoustic drivers that are mounted at opposite corners of the chamber; by driving these at the same frequency, with 18-deg phase shifts, an increase in force of a factor of 3-4 is obtainable relative to the force of a single-driver system that is operated at the same power level. This enhancement is due to the increased coupling between the sound driver and the chamber. An anomalous rotation is noted to be associated with the chamber; this is found to be eliminated by a physically as-yet inexplicable empirical solution.

High Efficiency End-Pumped Ho:Tm:YLF Disk Amplifier

Space based coherent lidar for global wind measurement requires an all solid state laser system with high energy, high efficiency and narrow linewidth that operates in the eye safe region. A Q-switched, diode pumped Ho:Tm:YLF 2 micrometer laser with output energy of as much as 125 mJ at 6 Hz with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 3% has been reported. Single frequency operation of the laser was achieved by injection seeding. The design of this laser is being incorporated into NASA's SPARCLE (SPAce Readiness Coherent Lidar Experiment) wind lidar mission. Laser output energy ranging from 500 mJ to 2 J is required for an operational space coherent lidar. We previously developed a high energy Ho:Tm:YLF master oscillator and side pumped power amplifier system and demonstrated a 600-mJ single frequency pulse at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. Although the output energy is high, the optical-to-optical efficiency is only about 2%. Designing a high energy, highly efficient, conductively cooled 2-micrometer laser remains a challenge. In this paper, the preliminary result of an end-pumped amplifier that has a potential to provide a factor 3 of improvement in the system efficiency is reported.

Towards the Quantum Internet: Entanglement Rate Analysis of High-Efficiency Electro-Optic Transducer

Coherent microwave-optical photon conversion is a key enabling technology for the Quantum Internet, since it allows entanglement distribution among superconducting-based network nodes. A high-efficiency electro-optic transducer based on three-dimensional superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology has recently been proposed at Fermilab. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of Fermilab's transduction hardware on the entanglement generation probability and the entanglement rate, which are two critical metrics from a communication engineering perspective. Furthermore, we provide some guidelines to increase the direct entanglement rate, i.e., the rate before any entanglement purification process. Our analysis shows that, through high-efficiency transduction, it is possible to reduce the network overhead. This preliminary work paves the way toward distantly interconnected superconducting quantum processors.

Wind Tunnel Testing of High Efficiency Low Power (HELP) Actuation for Active Flow Control

A High Efficiency Low Power (HELP) methodology has been successfully developed and tested on an active flow control (AFC) version of the 10%-scale high-lift Common Research Model (CRM-HL) at the NASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel (14x22). The AFC variant of the CRM-HL, designated as CRM-SHL-AFC, was integrated with modular HELP actuator cartridges on the shoulder of its highly deflected (≥50°) simplehinged flaps. A reference conventional CRM-HL configuration equipped with Fowler flaps and a nacelle chine was chosen to provide the targeted lift enhancement goals and for comparison with the results of the CRM-SHL-AFC. The current data are presented with the Transonic Wall Interference Correction System (TWICS) method applied. The HELP actuators, which use a combination of unsteady sweeping jets and steady discrete jets in tandem, were designed to overcome strong adverse pressure gradients, while minimizing the pneumatic power usage. The power coefficient (C(sub π)), which takes account of both supply air pressure and mass flow usage for the AFC actuators, is a useful parameter for judging the actuators’ performance efficiency and perhaps for scaling-up of the AFC system. Full HELP actuation coverage with a constant spanwise nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) was able to achieve the lift enhancement goals for the entire lift curve and was found to be the most effective AFC case. For the most effective case, mass flow rates greater than ~0.91 lbm/s and NPR values greater than ~1.8 (corresponding to C(sub π) = 0.18) are needed to achieve the lift enhancement goal at α = 9°, whereas mass flow rates greater than ~1.23 lbm/s and NPR values greater than ~2.3 (corresponding to C(sub π) = 0.3) are needed to achieve the lift enhancement goal at α = 17°. Surface pressure distributions indicate that the HELP actuation on the flap shoulder increased the suction pressures (and flow circulation) globally in both the streamwise and the spanwise directions, and thereby enhanced the lift over the entire high-lift system. The CRM-SHLAFC configuration equipped with HELP actuation was able to match or exceed the lift performance of the reference conventional CRM-HL, thus meeting the objective of the research.

Tuning the Intermolecular Electrostatic Interaction toward High-Efficiency and Low-Cost Organic Solar Cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved much progress with rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). It should be noted that the top-performance OSCs are generally consisted of active materials with complex chemical structures, resulting in high costs. Here, combining the material design and morphology control, high-efficiency OSCs are fabricated by a low-cost donor: acceptor blend. A completely non-fused electron acceptor named Tz is designed and synthesized via introducing thiazole units on both sides of a bithiophene core, which shows an outstanding PCE of 13.3% with a typical polythiophene donor. More importantly, optimization guidelines are presented to get excellent morphology for low-cost donor:acceptor systems. Three polythiophenes are selected, poly(3-hexylthiophene) and its two derivatives with electron-withdrawing substitutions (PDCBT and PDCBT-2F), as donors to fabricate the cell devices. The computational and experimental data reveal that decreasing the electrostatic interaction between polythiophene and Tz is the key to getting a suppressed miscibility and thus a high phase purity. Finally, this study provides insight into the molecular design and donor:acceptor matching requirements for high-efficiency and low-cost OSCs.

Potential high efficiency solar cells: Applications from space photovoltaic research

NASA involvement in photovoltaic energy conversion research development and applications spans over two decades of continuous progress. Solar cell research and development programs conducted by the Lewis Research Center's Photovoltaic Branch have produced a sound technology base not only for the space program, but for terrestrial applications as well. The fundamental goals which have guided the NASA photovoltaic program are to improve the efficiency and lifetime, and to reduce the mass and cost of photovoltaic energy conversion devices and arrays for use in space. The major efforts in the current Lewis program are on high efficiency, single crystal GaAs planar and concentrator cells, radiation hard InP cells, and superlattice solar cells. A brief historical perspective of accomplishments in high efficiency space solar cells will be given, and current work in all of the above categories will be described. The applicability of space cell research and technology to terrestrial photovoltaics will be discussed.

Center for High-Efficiency Electrical Technologies for Aircraft: Phase I Final Report

Under the University Leadership Initiative (ULI), the Center for High-Efficiency for Electrical Technologies (CHEETA) was established to develop and mature early-stage technologies pertaining to hydrogen-electric power and energy systems for aircraft. In particular, integration of these technologies on an aircraft system is envisioned to leverage the high specific energy content of liquid hydrogen (LH2) with fuel cell energy conversion and an electrically driven ducted fan system to provide an ultra-efficient propulsion drivetrain. For this concept, the LH2 system is not just used as an energy storage mechanism, but also as a cryogen to enable highly efficient superconducting electric systems. The end result of this concept is an integrated aircraft system with a quiet, efficient propulsion architecture that produces zero CO2, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter emissions at the vehicle level.

High efficiency thin-film GaAs solar cells

The paper demonstrates the feasibility of producing high-efficiency GaAs solar cells with high power-to-weight ratios by organic metallic chemical vapor deposition (OM-CVD) growth of thin epi-layers on suitable substrates. An AM1 conversion efficiency of 18% (14% AM0), or 17% (13% AM0) with a 5% grid coverage is achieved for a single-crystal GaAs n(+)/p cell grown by OM-CVD on a Ge wafer. Thin GaAs epi-layers OM-CVD grown can be fabricated with good crystallographic quality using a Si-substrate on which a thin Ge epi-interlayer is first deposited by CVD from GeH4 and processed for improved surface morphology

Catalyzing the Mass Adoption of High Efficiency Technologies in the Multifamily Housing Market

ICAST’s objective was to catalyze the adoption of very-high-efficiency (VHE) heat pump HVAC (mini-splits) and water heaters (HPWH) in multifamily (MF), especially affordable housing (MFAH). Nationally, the market penetration of ENERGY STAR-certified ASHPs is estimated at 43%, and for HPWHs it’s 3% (ENERGY STAR, 2022). Note that mini-splits are a much more practical choice for MF units than ducted systems and their adoption is only a portion of the number provided above, but isolating the market penetration data for mini-split systems is difficult. Both the heat pump-based HVAC and water heater systems can be approx. three times more efficient than their conventional counterparts for space and water heating. While awareness and adoption of VHE heat pumps has been growing nationally, and electric heat pump systems have outsold gas furnaces for two years in a row, the MF segment continues to lag behind single-family. MF constitutes almost a third of the housing in the U.S., so scaling up VHE adoption in this segment can assist in achieving critical climate change goals, while preserving housing affordability for the low-to-moderate income (LMI) population (historically, 85% of residents of MF are LMI).

Highly efficient organic solar cells with superior deformability enabled by diluting the small molecule acceptor content

Developing efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) with strong mechanical deformability is important to be addressed to ensure their operational reliability in wearable electronics. However, it is challenging to achieve mechanically robust polymer/small molecule OSCs with an efficiency over 17% due to the abundant brittle donor/acceptor (D/A) interface. Decreasing the small molecule content can reduce the brittle D/A interface area to enhance deformability, but it may also cause discontinuous electron-conducting regions and thus deteriorate photovoltaic performance. Here, we incorporate a polymer donor (D18) into a binary PTQ10cm-BTP-PhC6 system at a constant PTQ10:m-BTP-PhC6 ratio of 1 : 1.2 to minimize the D/A interfacial area and modulate phase separation, and subsequently fabricate mechanically reliable OSCs with high efficiency. The large incorporation of D18 molecules increases the crystallinity of m-BTP-PhC6 molecules because of the poor interaction between D18 and the two host materials, affording sufficient pathways for efficient charge percolation at a large D/A ratio. More importantly, highly aggregated m-BTP-PhC6 molecules help to minimize the D/A interfacial area, enabling ternary films with better deformability than their binary counterparts. As a result, ternary OSCs with a large D/A ratio of 1.5 : 1.2 exhibit a high efficiency of 17.3% with a crack-onset strain (COS) of 8.8%, which significantly outperforms their binary counterparts with an efficiency of 13.8% and a COS of 4.4%. Finally, diluting the content of small molecules and controlling intermolecular interaction through the introduction of the second polymer donor represents a promising strategy to fabricate efficient OSCs with superior deformability.

AbacusHOD : a highly efficient extended multitracer HOD framework and its application to BOSS and eBOSS data

ABSTRACT We introduce the AbacusHOD model and present two applications of AbacusHOD and the AbacusSummit simulations to observations. AbacusHOD is a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) framework written in Python that is particle-based, multitracer, highly generalized, and highly efficient. It is designed specifically with multitracer/cosmology analyses for next-generation large-scale structure surveys in mind, and takes advantage of the volume and precision offered by the new state-of-the-art AbacusSummit cosmological simulations. The model is also highly customizable and should be broadly applicable to any upcoming surveys and a diverse range of cosmological analyses. In this paper, we demonstrate the capabilities of the AbacusHOD framework through two example applications. The first example demonstrates the high efficiency and the large HOD extension feature set through an analysis of full-shape redshift-space clustering of BOSS galaxies at intermediate to small scales ($\lt 30\, h^{-1}$ Mpc), assessing the necessity of introducing secondary galaxy biases (assembly bias). We find strong evidence for using halo environment instead of concentration to trace secondary galaxy bias, a result which also leads to a moderate reduction in the ‘lensing is low’ tension. The second example demonstrates the multitracer capabilities of the AbacusHOD package through an analysis of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey cross-correlation measurements between three different galaxy tracers: luminous red galaxies, emission-line galaxies, and quasi-stellar objects. We expect the AbacusHOD framework, in combination with the AbacusSummit simulation suite, to play an important role in a simulation-based analysis of the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument data sets.

High Efficiency OLED Light Engine

LED Specialists has accomplished the program objective in designing a high efficiency OLED light engine combining high-performance OLED panels in the 5W-8W range. We achieved our goal by using an Active-Clamp Flyback circuit topology using state-of-the-art electronics. Evaluation testing of our second-generation prototype PC board has demonstrated an efficiency rating of 93% and dimming capability between 100% and 5% of OLED brightness. A reliability analysis of the design shows it to have a predicted Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of approximately 1,000,000 hours.

Highly Efficient Nd:yag Lasers for Free-space Optical Communications

A highly efficient Nd:YAG laser end-pumped by semiconductor lasers as a possible free-space optical communications source is discussed. Because this concept affords high pumping densities, a long absorption length, and excellent mode-matching characteristics, it is estimated that electrical-to-optical efficiencies greater than 5% could be achieved. Several engineering aspects such as resonator size and configuration, pump collecting optics, and thermal effects are also discussed. Finally, possible methods for combining laser-diode pumps to achieve higher output powers are illustrated.
