Multiscale evolution of charmed particles in a nuclear medium
Parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) is a multiscale problem. In this work, we calculate the interaction of charm quarks with the QGP within the higher twist formalism at high virtuality and high energy using the Modular All Twist Transverse-scattering Elastic-drag and Radiation (MATTER) model, while the low-virtuality and high-energy portion is treated via a linearized Boltzmann transport formalism. Coherence effect that reduces the medium-induced emission rate in the MATTER model is also taken into account through a virtuality-dependent qˆ, leaving the simultaneous dependence of qˆ on heavy quark mass and virtuality for future studies. The interplay between these two formalisms is studied phenomenologically and used to produce a first description of the D-meson and charged hadron nuclear modification factor R AA across multiple centralities. As a result, all calculations were carried out utilizing the Jet Energy-loss Tomography with a Statistically and Computationally Advanced Program Envelope framework.
Measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in $pp$ and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = $5.02$ TeV
The production of electrons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity in proton-proton ($pp$) and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The cross section measured in p p collisions in the transverse momentum interval $2$ < $p_T$ < $26$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$ was compared with models based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The yield in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions, measured in the interval $2$ < $p_T$ < $26$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$, was used to compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$, extrapolating the $pp$ reference cross section to $p_T$ larger than 8 $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$. The measured $R_{AA}$ shows significant suppression of the yield of electrons from beauty-hadron decays at high $p_T$ and does not show a significant dependence above 8 $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$ within uncertainties. The results are described by several theoretical models based on different implementations of the interaction of heavy quarks with a quark-gluon plasma, which predict a smaller energy loss for beauty quarks compared to light and charm quarks.
Thermal photon production in Gubser inviscid relativistic fluid dynamics
The Gubser solution to inviscid relativistic fluid dynamics is used to examine the role of transverse expansion on the energy spectrum of photons radiated by quark-gluon plasma. Transverse flow is shown to be a modest effect on the energy spectrum of photons as a whole, despite its large effect on rare high-energy photons produced at low temperatures. An exact expression is derived for the volume of the plasma as a function of its temperature. Furthermore, a simple formula is obtained for the energy spectrum of high-energy thermal photons, which is used to relate the inverse slope T eff of the photon spectrum at energy E to the maximum temperature of the plasma T 0 , finding T eff ≈ T 0 / (1 + $\frac{5}{2}$ T 0 /E).
Baryon transport in color flux tubes
Color flux tubes are a standard perspective from which to understand stopping in high-energy collisions. Mechanisms for baryon transport and polarization within a tube are considered here, both in regards to the transport of baryons from the target and projectile toward midrapidity and in regards to the correlations of baryon-antibaryon pairs created in the tube. The roles of tube merging and gluon radiation within a tube are emphasized.
Coordinate versus momentum cuts and effects of collective flow on critical fluctuations
We analyze particle number fluctuations in the crossover region near the critical endpoint of a first-order phase transition by utilizing molecular dynamics simulations of the classical Lennard-Jones fluid. We extend our previous study [V. A. Kuznietsov , ] by incorporating longitudinal collective flow. The scaled variance of particle number distribution inside different coordinate and momentum space acceptances is computed through ensemble averaging and found to agree with earlier results obtained using time averaging, validating the ergodic hypothesis for fluctuation observables. Presence of a sizable collective flow is found to be essential for observing large fluctuations from the critical point in momentum space acceptances. We discuss our findings in the context of heavy-ion collisions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Fluctuations and correlations of baryonic chiral partners
The exploration of critical phenomena in phase transitions of strongly interacting matter governed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is one of the goals of present ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision experiments at BNL and CERN. The key research direction is to locate the putative critical point on the phase diagram of QCD linked to the chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature and/or density. One of the main theoretical tools used for this purpose is the fluctuations of conserved charges, such as the net-baryon number. However, due to experimental limitations, analyses of heavy-ion collision data suffer from a very doubtful basing of the net-proton number being a proxy for the total net-baryon number fluctuations. In this work, we use the parity doublet model to investigate the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in hot and dense hadronic matter. The model accounts for chiral criticality within the mean-field approximation. We focus on the qualitative properties and systematics of the first- and second-order susceptibility of the net-baryon number density, and their ratios for nucleons of positive and negative parity, as well as their correlator. We show that the fluctuations of the positive-parity nucleon do not necessarily reflect the fluctuations of the total net-baryon number density at the phase boundary of the chiral phase transition. We also investigate the nontrivial structure of the correlator. Furthermore, we discuss and quantify the differences between the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in the vicinity of the chiral and liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. We indicate a possible relevance of our results with the interpretation of the experimental data on net-proton number fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. Probing the Short-Distance Structure of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Energy Correlators
Energy-energy correlators (EECs) are promising observables to study the dynamics of jet evolution in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) through its imprint on angular scales in the energy flux of final-state particles. We carry out the first complete calculation of EECs using realistic simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions and dissect the different dynamics underlying the final distribution through analyses of jet propagation in a uniform medium. The EECs of γ -jets in heavy-ion collisions are found to be enhanced by the medium response from elastic scatterings instead of induced gluon radiation at large angles. In the meantime, EECs are suppressed at small angles due to energy loss and transverse momentum broadening of jet shower partons. These modifications are further shown to be sensitive to the angular scale of the in-medium interaction, as characterized by the Debye screening mass. Experimental verification and measurement of such modifications will shed light on this scale and the short-distance structure of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions. Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV
The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN
Forward production of protons in relativistic 12C-nucleus collisions
The production of protons in heavy ion collisions through the knockout mechanism (abrasion) is described using the Glauber model. The multiple knockouts from the projectile, including the inelastic collision series with the target, are considered using a closure approximation in treating energy conservation. Calculations for reactions of 12C projectiles with several targets at energies of 1 and 2A GeV arc compared to experiments. For large secondary proton momentum a strong dependence on the target mass is found and attributed to multiple scattering of the projectile knockouts.

Evidence for a QCD accelerator in relativistic heavy-ion collisions
Here, we report measurements of forward jets produced in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The jet-energy distributions extend to energies much larger than expected by Feynman scaling. This constitutes the first clear evidence for Feynman-scaling violations in heavy-ion collisions. Such high-energy particle production has been in models via QCD string interactions, but so far is untested by experiment. One such model calls this a hadronic accelerator. Studies with a particular heavy-ion event generator ( HIJING ) show that photons and mesons exhibit such very high-energy production in a heavy-ion collision, so a QCD accelerator appropriately captures the physics associated with such QCD string interactions. All models other than HIJING used for hadronic interactions in the study of extensive air showers from cosmic rays either do not include these QCD string interactions or have smaller effects from the QCD accelerator.
