Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3

The honeycomb magnet α-RuCl 3 has attracted considerable interest because it is proximate to the Kitaev Hamiltonian whose excitations are Majoranas and vortices. The thermal Hall conductivity κ xy of Majorana fermions is predicted to be half-quantized. Half-quantization of κxy/T (T, temperature) was recently reported, but this observation has proven difficult to reproduce. Here, we report detailed measurements of κ xy on α-RuCl3 with the magnetic field B ∥ a (zigzag axis). In our experiment, κ xy /T is observed to be strongly temperature dependent between 0.5 and 10 K. We show that its temperature profile matches the distinct form expected for topological bosonic modes in a Chern-insulator-like model. Our analysis yields magnon band energies in agreement with spectroscopic experiments. At high B, the spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of ~1. In conclusion, the bosonic character is incompatible with half-quantization of κ xy /T.

Phase separation, edge currents, and Hall effect for active matter with Magnus dynamics

Here we examine run-and-tumble disks in two-dimensional systems where the particles also have a Magnus component to their dynamics. For increased activity, we find that the system forms a motility-induced phase-separated (MIPS) state with chiral edge flow around the clusters, where the direction of the current is correlated with the sign of the Magnus term. The stability of the MIPS state is non-monotonic as a function of increasing Magnus term amplitude, with the MIPS region first extending down to lower activities followed by a break up of MIPS at large Magnus amplitudes into a gel-like state. We examine the dynamics in the presence of quenched disorder and a uniform drive and find that the bulk flow exhibits a drive-dependent Hall angle. This is a result of the side jump effect produced by scattering from the pinning sites and is similar to the behavior found for skyrmions in chiral magnets with quenched disorder.

Weyl semimetal in the rare-earth hexaboride family supporting a pseudonodal surface and a giant anomalous Hall effect

Rare-earth hexaborides offer a rich tapestry for exploring the interplay of topological orders, magnetism, and electron-correlation effects associated with protected quantum phenomena. Using first-principles modeling, we identify in cerium hexaboride (CeB 6 ) a topological state that harbors a pseudonodal surface (PNS) along with double-Weyl fermions. An analysis of the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level reveals the presence of M z -mirror-symmetry-protected band crossings that involve itinerant (d) and localized (f) states of Ce. These band crossings are found to remain nearly gapless as one goes away from the mirror plane, driving the formation of PNS states. We also demonstrate the presence of coexisting double-Weyl fermions with chiral charges of ±2 on the C 4z rotational axis. By analyzing the Berry curvature field associated with the topological states, we predict that CeB 6 supports a giant anomalous Hall conductivity of -1840Ω -1 cm -1 in the slightly electron-doped regime, which would be larger than the values reported to date in magnetic Weyl semimetals. Our study thus indicates that CeB 6 , which combines ferromagnetic order with topological physics in a heavy-fermion matrix, would provide a promising playground for investigating topological magnetic states with giant anomalous Hall responses.

Plastic flow and the skyrmion Hall effect

Skyrmions in chiral magnets are a particle-like texture that has been attracting growing interest due to their novel dynamics and possible applications. Here, we discuss the role of disorder and skyrmion-skyrmion interaction in governing their motion under an external drive.

Intrinsic exchange biased anomalous Hall effect in an uncompensated antiferromagnet MnBi 2 Te 4

Achieving spin-pinning at the interface of hetero-bilayer ferromagnet/antiferromagnet structures in conventional exchange bias systems can be challenging due to difficulties in interface control and the weakening of spin-pinning caused by poor interface quality. In this work, we propose an alternative approach to stabilize the exchange interaction at the interface of an uncompensated antiferromagnet by utilizing a gradient of interlayer exchange coupling. We demonstrate this exchange interaction through a designed field training protocol in the odd-layer topological antiferromagnet MnBi 2 Te 4 . Our results reveal a remarkable field-trained exchange bias of up to ~ 400 mT, which exhibits high repeatability and can be easily reset by a large training field. Notably, this field-trained exchange bias effect persists even with zero-field initialization, presenting a stark contrast to the traditional field-cooled exchange bias. The highly tunable exchange bias observed in this single antiferromagnet compound, without the need for an additional magnetic layer, provides valuable insight into the exchange interaction mechanism. These findings pave the way for the systematic design of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics.
