Search for two-neutrino double-beta decay of 136 Xe to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ excited state of 136 Ba with the complete EXO-200 dataset*

A new search for two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decay of 136 Xe to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ excited state of 136 Ba is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. A deep learning-based convolutional neural network is used to discriminate signal from background events. Signal detection efficiency is increased relative to previous searches by EXO-200 by more than a factor of two. With the addition of the Phase II dataset taken with an upgraded detector, the median 90% confidence level half-life sensitivity of 2νββ decay to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ state of 136 Ba is 2.9 x 10 24 yr using a total 136 Xe exposure of 234.1 kg yr. Furthermore, no statistically significant evidence for 2νββ decay to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ state is observed, leading to a lower limit of $T$$^{2v}_{1/2}$(0 + → $0$$^{+}_{1}$) > 1.4 x 10 24 yr at 90% confidence level, improved by 70% relative to the current world's best constraint.

Observation of a new isomer in {sup 185}Au

Delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of 185Au was studied at the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer. A new isomer at an excitation energy of 1504.2(4) keV with a half-life of 630(80) ns was identified via γ-γ coincidence analysis, decaying via a 294.8(3) keV transition. Based on Weisskopf estimates, the multipolarity of the 295 keV transition is assigned to be E1, M1, E2, or M2. Possible configurations for this new isomer are discussed based on configuration-constrained potential energy surface calculations.

Searching for New Physics in two-neutrino double beta decay with CUPID

In the past few years, attention has been drawn to the fact that a precision analysis of two-neutrino double beta decay (2υββ) allows the study of interesting physics cases like the emission of Majoron bosons and possible Lorentz symmetry violation. These processes modify the summed-energy distribution of the two electrons emitted in 2υββ. CUPID is a next-generation experiment aiming to exploit 100 Mo-enriched scintillating Li 2 MoO 4 crystals, operating as cryogenic calorimeters. Given the relatively fast half-life of 100 Mo 2υββ and the large exposure that can be reached by CUPID, we expect to measure with very high precision the 100 Mo 2υββ spectrum shape, reaching great sensitivities in the search for distortions induced by the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this contribution, we present the CUPID exclusion sensitivity for such New Physics processes, as well as the preliminary projected background of CUPID.

Investigation of ASIC-based signal readout electronics for LEGEND-1000

LEGEND, the Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless ββ Decay, is a ton-scale experimental program to search for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay in the isotope 76 Ge with an unprecedented sensitivity. Building on the success of the low-background 76 Ge-based GERDA and Majorana Demonstrator experiments, the LEGEND collaboration is targeting a signal discovery sensitivity beyond 10 28 yr on the decay half-life with approximately 10 t∙yr of exposure. Signal readout electronics in close proximity to the detectors plays a major role in maximizing the experiment's discovery sensitivity by reducing electronic noise and improving pulse shape analysis capabilities for the rejection of backgrounds. However, the proximity also poses unique challenges for the radiopurity of the electronics. Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology allows the implementation of the entire charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) into a single low-mass chip while improving the electronic noise and reducing the power consumption. In this work, we investigated the properties and electronic performance of a commercially available ASIC CSA, the XGLab CUBE preamplifier, together with a p-type point contact high-purity germanium detector. We show that low noise levels and excellent energy resolutions can be obtained with this readout. Moreover, we demonstrate the viability of pulse shape discrimination techniques for reducing background events.

Development of a 127 Xe calibration source for nEXO

Here, we study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a 127 Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in 136 Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of 127 Xe and its small Q-value compared to that of 136 Xe 0νββ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. We then use simulations to project the precision with which such a source could calibrate spatial corrections to the light and charge response of the nEXO TPC.

Flow and thermal modelling of the argon volume in the DarkSide-20k TPC

The DarkSide-20k dark matter experiment, currently under construction at LNGS, features a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC) with a ∼ 50 t argon target from an underground well. At this scale, it is crucial to optimise the argon flow pattern for efficient target purification and for fast distribution of internal gaseous calibration sources with lifetimes of the order of hours. To this end, we have performed computational fluid dynamics simulations and heat transfer calculations. The residence time distribution shows that the detector is well-mixed on time-scales of the turnover time (∼ 40 d). Notably, simulations show that despite a two-order-of-magnitude difference between the turnover time and the half-life of 83m Kr of 1.83 h, source atoms have the highest probability to reach the centre of the TPC 13 min after their injection, allowing for a homogeneous distribution before undergoing radioactive decay. We further analyse the thermal aspects of dual-phase operation and define the requirements for the formation of a stable gas pocket on top of the liquid. We find a best-estimate value for the heat transfer rate at the liquid-gas interface of 62 W with an upper limit of 144 W and a minimum gas pocket inlet temperature of 89 K to avoid condensation on the acrylic anode. This study also informs the placement of liquid inlets and outlets in the TPC. The presented techniques are widely applicable to other large-scale, noble-liquid detectors.

Machine learning-powered data cleaning for LEGEND: a semi-supervised approach using affinity propagation and support vector machines

Neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a rare nuclear process that, if observed, will provide insight into the nature of neutrinos and help explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay (LEGEND) will operate in two phases to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$. The first (second) stage will employ 200 (1000) kg of High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) enriched in 76 Ge to achieve a half-life sensitivity of 10 27 (10 28 ) years. In this study, we present a semi-supervised data-driven approach to remove non-physical events captured by HPGe detectors powered by a novel artificial intelligence model. We utilize affinity propagation to cluster waveform signals based on their shape and a support vector machine to classify them into different categories. We train, optimize, and test our model on data taken from a natural abundance HPGe detector installed in the Full Chain Test experimental stand at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We demonstrate that our model yields a maximum sacrifice of physics events of $0.024 ^{+0.004}_{-0.003} \%$ after data cleaning. Our model is being used to accelerate data cleaning development for LEGEND-200 and will serve to improve data cleaning procedures for LEGEND-1000.

Increased SUMOylation of TCF21 improves its stability and function in human endometriotic stromal cells

Abstract Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease. Our previous study demonstrated that elevated levels of transcription factor 21 (TCF21) in endometriotic tissues enhanced steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1) and estrogen receptor β (ERβ) expression by forming a heterodimer with upstream stimulatory factor 2 (USF2), allowing these TCF21/USF2 complexes to bind to the promoters of SF-1 and ERβ. Furthermore, TCF21 contributed to the increased proliferation of endometriotic stromal cells (ESCs), suggesting that TCF21 may play a vital role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. SUMOylation is a posttranslational modification that has emerged as a crucial molecular regulatory mechanism. However, the mechanism regulating TCF21 SUMOylation in endometriosis is incompletely characterized. Thus, this study aimed to explore the effect of TCF21 SUMOylation on its expression and regulation in ovarian endometriosis. We found that the levels of SUMOylated TCF21 were increased in endometriotic tissues and stromal cells compared with eutopic endometrial tissues and stromal cells and enhanced by estrogen. Treatment with the SUMOylation inhibitor ginkgolic acid (GA) and the results of a protein half-life assay demonstrated that SUMOylation can stabilize the TCF21 protein. A coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assay showed that SUMOylation probably increased its interaction with USF2. Further analyses elucidated that SUMOylation of TCF21 significantly increased the binding activity of USF2 to the SF-1 and ERβ promoters. Moreover, the SUMOylation motifs in TCF21 affected the proliferation ability of ESCs. The results of this study suggest that SUMOylation plays a critical role in mediating the high expression of TCF21 in ESCs and may participate in the development of endometriosis.

Coefficients for Estimating Prenatal Dose in Pregnant Workers from Acute Intakes

Inhalation and ingestion dose coefficients for the embryo and fetus from intakes of radionuclides by the mother are provided in the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 88 for intake of each of 74 radionuclides. To address the many other possible radionuclides to which workers may be exposed, effective dose coefficients were developed for the embryo/fetus for all additional radionuclides addressed in ICRP Publication 107 with half-life of 10 min or more. The general approach was to use the estimated dose to the mother’s uterus during pregnancy as a scalable proxy for the dose to the embryo/fetus. The set of scaling factors used in the study was derived from analyses of the relationships of the dose to the mother’s uterus and the effective dose to the embryo/fetus for the ~400 cases (considering two intake modes and multiple forms of many of the radionuclides) addressed in Publication 88.

Pharmacokinetics, Metabolite Measurement, and Biomarker Identification of Dermal Exposure to Permethrin Using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

Impregnating military uniforms and outdoor clothing with the insecticide permethrin is an approach to reduce exposure to insect borne diseases and to repel pests and disease vectors such as mosquitos and sandflies, but the practice exposes wearers to prolonged dermal exposure to the pesticide. Key metabolite(s) from a low dose dermal exposure of permethrin were identified using accelerator mass spectrometry. Metabolite standards were synthesized and a high performance liquide chromatography (HPLC) elution protocol to separate individual metabolites in urine was developed. Six human subjects were exposed dermally on the forearm to 25 mg of permethrin containing 1.0 µCi of 14 C for 8 h. Blood, saliva and urine samples were taken for 7d. Absorption/elimination rates and metabolite concentrations varied by individual. Average absorption was 0.2% of the dose. Serum concentrations rose until 12–24 h postdermal application then rapidly declined reaching predose levels by 72 h. Maximum saliva excretion occurred 6 h postdosing. The maximum urinary excretion rate occurred during 12–24 h; average elimination half-life was 56 h. 3-Phenoxybenzyl alcohol glucuronide was the most abundant metabolite identified when analyzing elution fractions, but most of the radioactivity was in still more polar fractions suggesting extensive degradative metabolism and for which there were no standards. Finally, analyses of archived urine samples with the ultra performance liquid chromatography-accelerator mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (UPLC-AMS-MS) system isolated a distinct polar metabolite but it was much diminished from the previous analyses a decade earlier.

Lifetimes of two- and four-neutron-hole states in 204 Pb and 206 Pb

The centroid-shift method was used to determine half-lives of excited levels in 204 Pb and 206 Pb. For the states with 𝐼 𝜋 = 12 + , 17 − , and 19 − in 204 Pb, values of 𝑇 1/2 = 4.9⁢(3), 3.9(3), and 0.9(3) ns, respectively, were determined. The half-life of the 𝐼 𝜋 = 9 − level in 206 Pb was measured to be 1.1(3) ns. In 204 Pb, the 12 + state arises from two neutron holes in the 𝑖 13/2 subshell, while the 17 − and 19 − levels are built on 𝜈⁡(𝑖$^{−3}_{13/2}$, 𝑝$^{−1}_{1/2}$) and 𝜈⁡(𝑖$^{−3}_{13/2}$, 𝑓$^{−1}_{5/2}$) four-neutron-hole configurations, respectively. The 9 − state in 206 Pb results from a 𝜈⁡(𝑖$^{−1}_{13/2}$, 𝑓${−1}_{5/2}$) excitation. As a result, the transition probabilities for the decay of these isomeric levels are reasonably consistent with the expected single-particle values, and these states are described well by shell-model calculations using the kshell code with the KHHE interaction.

First Evidence of Solar Neutrino Interactions on 13 C

The SNO+ Collaboration reports the first evidence of 8 B solar neutrinos interacting on 13 C nuclei. The charged current interaction proceeds through 13 C +𝜈 𝑒 → 13 N+𝑒 − which is followed, with a 10 minute half life, by 13 N → 13 C +𝑒 + +𝜈 𝑒 . The detection strategy is based on the delayed coincidence between the electron and the positron. Evidence for the charged current signal is presented with a significance of 4.2⁢𝜎. Using the natural abundance of 13 C present in the scintillator, 5.7 metric tons of 13 C over 231 days of data were used in this analysis. The 5.6$^{+3.0}_{−2.3}$ observed events in the data set are consistent with the expectation of 4.7$^{+0.6}_{−1.3}$ events. This result is the second real-time measurement of CC interactions of 8 B neutrinos with nuclei and constitutes the lowest energy observation of neutrino interactions on 13 C generally. This enables the first direct measurement of the CC 𝜈 𝑒 reaction to the ground state of 13 N , yielding an average cross section of (16.1$^{+8.5}_{−6.7}$⁢(stat.)$^{+1.6}_{−2.7}$⁢(syst.))×10 −43 cm 2 over the relevant 8 B solar neutrino energies.

First Results on the Search for Lepton Number Violating Neutrinoless Double-𝛽 Decay with the LEGEND-200 Experiment

The LEGEND Collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decay by operating high-purity germanium detectors enriched in 76 Ge in a low-background liquid argon environment. Building on key technological innovations from the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR experiment, LEGEND-200 has performed a first 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay search based on 61.0 kg yr of data. Over half of this exposure comes from our highest performing detectors, including newly developed inverted-coaxial detectors, and is characterized by an estimated background level of 0.5$^{+0.3}_{−0.2}$ ⁢cts/(keV ton yr) in the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay signal region. A combined analysis of data from GERDA, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, and LEGEND-200, characterized by a 90% confidence level exclusion sensitivity of 2.8 ×10 26 yr on the half-life of 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay, reveals no evidence for a signal and sets a new observed lower limit at 𝑇$^{⁢0𝜈}_{1/2}$ > 1.9 × 10 26 yr (90% confidence level). Assuming the decay is mediated by Majorana neutrinos, this corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 𝑚 𝛽⁢𝛽 < 75–200 meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element.

Beta-Decay Half-Lives beyond 54 Ca: A Systematic Survey of Decay Properties Approaching the Neutron Dripline

In an experiment performed at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) using the FRIB Decay Station initiator, 15 new half-lives of isotopes near 54 Ca were measured. A new method of extracting lifetimes from experimental data, taking into account the unknown 𝛽-delayed neutron emission branches of very neutron-rich nuclei, was developed to enable systematic uncertainty analysis. The experiment observed a dramatic change in the half-life systematics for the isotopes with neutron number 𝑁 = 34. Beyond 𝑁 = 34, the decline of nuclear lifetime is much slower, leading to longer than anticipated lifetimes for near-dripline nuclei. State-of-the-art shell-model calculations can explain the experimental results, revealing the imprint of shell effects and the need for modification of single-particle neutron states. In conclusion, the results from a newly developed quasiparticle random phase approximation model with potential for making global predictions were also tested against the experimental results and good agreement was found.

Core-excited microsecond isomer in 207 Pb

An isomeric state with T 1/2 = 1.46(10) μs and E x = 8835 keV has been established in 207 Pb. Here, this state likely arises from the occupation of neutron holes in the high-j i 13/2 and j 15/2 subshells following the excitation of the 208 Pb core. The high-spin excited level structure of 207 Pb has been extended beyond the previously known states up to E x ≈ 6 MeV. Additionally, a more precise value of the half-life of the I π = 10 + isomer in 208 Pb has been obtained. Shell-model calculations provide a good account of the structure up to the 31/2 + level in 207 Pb, while the energies of higher-spin states built from exclusively high-j nucleons are considerably underestimated.

Measurements of Short-Lived Isomers from Photofission as a Method of Active Interrogation for Special Nuclear Materials

Isomeric fission products, such as 134m Te (T 1/2 = 164 ns) and 136m Xe (T 1/2 = 2.95 μs), are proposed as a signature of special nuclear materials in active interrogation applications. To test this conjecture, monoenergetic 9, 11, and 13 MeV photons from the HIγS facility are used to induce fission of 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu targets. The de-excitation γ rays of the isomers are measured using time-gated spectroscopy with high-purity germanium detectors. The 134m Te and 136m Xe isomers are detected and identified by the energy and decay half-life of their characteristic γ-ray transitions. The ratio of yields for these two signature γ rays, corresponding to 134m Te/( 136m Xe + 136 I), is found to be strongly correlated with the identity of the fissioning nuclei. These results show that fission-product isomers may be used in active interrogation to detect and identify special nuclear materials, even providing information on the isotopic enrichment. In conclusion, the feasibility of an active interrogation scenario using a bremsstrahlung beam is discussed.

γ-ray measurements in fast-neutron-induced reactions on 203 Tl

Fast-neutron-induced reactions can be used to characterize reaction mechanisms, investigate nuclear structure, and impose constraints on nuclear models. Because of the difficulty in predicting such effects, experimental data are important to constrain models. Thallium isotopes located close to the doubly magic Pb 208 nucleus are important for comparison with shell-model calculations. Study the population of excited states in Tl 203 and lighter isotopes in such reactions. Our methods are as follows. γ -ray cross sections were measured. The data were taken by using the Germanium Array for Neutron-Induced Excitations spectrometer. The pulsed neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's Weapons Neutron Research facility provided neutrons in the energy range from 1 to 300 MeV. The time-of-flight technique was used to determine the incident neutron energies. Cross sections for emission of several γ rays in 20 reaction channels were determined. Candidates for the intruder 9 / 2 - state in Tl 203 , from the odd proton in the h 9 / 2 orbital, and the first 5 + states in Tl 202 , 204 , from admixture of configurations, were identified. The excitation energy of the candidate 9 / 2 - , π h 9 / 2 state is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction from a semi-empirical weak-coupling model and its half-life is in the range of tens of nanoseconds. The feeding of a previously known isomer in Tl 202 exhibits similarities with the feeding of other isomers in this mass region.

After 1000 live-days, the median exclusion sensitivity to the half-life of Xe136 is projected to be 1.06×1026 years (90% confidence level), similar to existing constraints. We also report the expected sensitivity of a possible subsequent dedicated exposure using 90% enrichment with Xe136 at 1.06×1027 years.
