Direct geometric probe of singularities in band structure

A quantum system’s energy landscape may have points where multiple energy surfaces are degenerate and that exhibit singular geometry of the wave function manifold, with major consequences for the system’s properties. Ultracold atoms in optical lattices have been used to indirectly characterize such points in the band structure. Here we measured the non-Abelian transformation produced by transport directly through the singularities. We accelerated atoms along a quasi-momentum trajectory that enters, turns, and then exits the singularities at linear and quadratic band-touching points of a honeycomb lattice. Measurements after transport identified the topological winding numbers of these singularities to be 1 and 2, respectively. Our work introduces a distinct method for probing singularities that enables the study of non-Dirac singularities in ultracold-atom quantum simulators.

Polar state reversal in active fluids

Spontaneous emergence of correlated states such as flocks and vortices is a prime example of collective dynamics and self-organization observed in active matter. In geometrically confined systems, the formation of globally correlated polar states proceeds through the emergence of a macroscopic steadily rotating vortex, which spontaneously selects a clockwise or counterclockwise global chiral state. In this work, we reveal that a global vortex formed by colloidal rollers exhibits polar state reversal and that a subsequent formation of the collective states upon re-energizing the system is not random. We combine experiments and simulations to elucidate how a combination of hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions leads to hidden asymmetries in the local particle positional order, reflecting the chiral state of the system. These asymmetries can be exploited to systematically command subsequent polar states of active liquids through temporal control of the activity.

Time-series forecasting using manifold learning, radial basis function interpolation, and geometric harmonics

We address a three-tier numerical framework based on nonlinear manifold learning for the forecasting of high-dimensional time series, relaxing the “curse of dimensionality” related to the training phase of surrogate/machine learning models. At the first step, we embed the high-dimensional time series into a reduced low-dimensional space using nonlinear manifold learning (local linear embedding and parsimonious diffusion maps). Then, we construct reduced-order surrogate models on the manifold (here, for our illustrations, we used multivariate autoregressive and Gaussian process regression models) to forecast the embedded dynamics. Finally, we solve the pre-image problem, thus lifting the embedded time series back to the original high-dimensional space using radial basis function interpolation and geometric harmonics. The proposed numerical data-driven scheme can also be applied as a reduced-order model procedure for the numerical solution/propagation of the (transient) dynamics of partial differential equations (PDEs). In conclusion, we assess the performance of the proposed scheme via three different families of problems: (a) the forecasting of synthetic time series generated by three simplistic linear and weakly nonlinear stochastic models resembling electroencephalography signals, (b) the prediction/propagation of the solution profiles of a linear parabolic PDE and the Brusselator model (a set of two nonlinear parabolic PDEs), and (c) the forecasting of a real-world data set containing daily time series of ten key foreign exchange rates spanning the time period 3 September 2001–29 October 2020.

Noise-resistant Landau-Zener sweeps from geometrical curves

Landau-Zener physics is often exploited to generate quantum logic gates and to perform state initialization and readout. The quality of these operations can be degraded by noise fluctuations in the energy gap at the avoided crossing. We leverage a recently discovered correspondence between qubit evolution and space curves in three dimensions to design noise-robust Landau-Zener sweeps through an avoided crossing. In the case where the avoided crossing is purely noise-induced, we prove that operations based on monotonic sweeps cannot be robust to noise. Hence, we design families of phase gates based on non-monotonic drives that are error-robust up to second order. In the general case where there is an avoided crossing even in the absence of noise, we present a general technique for designing robust driving protocols that takes advantage of a relationship between the Landau-Zener problem and space curves of constant torsion.

Partial charge transfer and absence of induced magnetization in EuS(111)/Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructures

We report that heterostructures made from topological and magnetic insulators promise to form excellent platforms for new electronic and spintronic functionalities mediated by interfacial effects. We report the results of a first-principles density functional theory study of the geometric, electronic structure, and magnetic properties of the EuS( 111 )/Bi 2 Se 3 interface, including van der Waals and relativistic spin-orbit effects. In contrast to previous theoretical studies, we find no appreciable magnetic anisotropy in such a heterostructure. We also do not see additional induced magnetization at the interface or the magnetic proximity effect on the topological states. This is due to the localized nature of Eu moments and because of a partial charge transfer of ~ 0.5 electron from Eu to Se. The formation of the surface dipole shifts the Dirac cone about 0.4 eV below the chemical potential, and the associated electrostatic screening moves the topological state from the first to the second quintuple layer of Bi 2 Se 3 .

Roadmap on spatiotemporal light fields

Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulse with ultimately sophisticated structures represents a major goal of the everlasting pursue of ultra-fast information transmission and processing as well as ultra-intense energy concentration and extraction. It also holds the key to unlock new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are always treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packet as solution of the Maxwell’s equations. In the past decade, however, more generalized forms of spatiotemporally nonseparable solution started to emerge with growing importance for their striking physical effects. This roadmap intends to highlight the recent advances in the creation and control of increasingly complex spatiotemporally sculptured pulses, from spatiotemporally separable to complex nonseparable states, with diverse geometric and topological structures, presenting a bird’s eye viewpoint on the zoology of spatiotemporal light fields and the outlook of future trends and open challenges.

Geometric origin of the intrinsic transverse spin transport in a canted-antiferromagnet/heavy-metal heterostructure

We theoretically study the conditions under which an intrinsic spin Nernst effect–a transverse spin current induced by an applied temperature gradient–can occur in a canted-antiferromagnet insulator, such as LaFeO 3 and other materials of the same family. The spin Nernst effect may provide a microscopic mechanism for an experimentally observed anomalous thermovoltage in LaFeO 3 /Pt heterostructures, where spin is transferred across the insulator/metal interface when a temperature gradient is applied to LaFeO 3 parallel to the interface. We find that LaFeO 3 exhibits an intrinsic spin Nernst effect when inversion symmetry is broken on the axes parallel to both the applied temperature gradient and the direction of spin transport, which can result in a spin injection across the insulator/metal interface. Furthermore, our paper provides a general derivation of a symmetry-breaking-induced spin Nernst effect, which may open a path to engineering a finite spin Nernst effect in systems where it would otherwise not arise.

Fibers add flavor. Part II. 5d SCFTs, gauge theories, and dualities

In [1, 2] we proposed an approach based on graphs to characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise as compactifications of 6d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1 , 0) SCFTs. The graphs, so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFDs), are derived using the realization of 5d SCFTs via M-theory on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with a canonical singularity. In this paper we complement this geometric approach by connecting the CFD of an SCFT to its weakly coupled gauge theory or quiver descriptions and demonstrate that the CFD as recovered from the gauge theory approach is consistent with that as determined by geometry. To each quiver description we also associate a graph, and the embedding of this graph into the CFD that is associated to an SCFT provides a systematic way to enumerate all possible consistent weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions of this SCFT. Furthermore, different embeddings of gauge theory graphs into a fixed CFD can give rise to new UV-dualities for which we provide evidence through an analysis of the prepotential, and which, for some examples, we substantiate by constructing the M-theory geometry in which the dual quiver descriptions are manifest.

Holographic thermal correlators: a tale of Fuchsian ODEs and integration contours

We analyze real-time thermal correlation functions of conserved currents in holographic field theories using the grSK geometry, which provides a contour prescription for their evaluation. We demonstrate its efficacy, arguing that there are situations involving components of conserved currents, or derivative interactions, where such a prescription is, in fact, essential. To this end, we first undertake a careful analysis of the linearized wave equations in AdS black hole backgrounds and identify the branch points of the solutions as a function of (complexified) frequency and momentum. All the equations we study are Fuchsian with only regular singular points that for the most part are associated with the geometric features of the background. Special features, e.g., the appearance of apparent singular points at the horizon, whence outgoing solutions end up being analytic, arise at higher codimension loci in parameter space. Using the grSK geometry, we demonstrate that these apparent singularities do not correspond to any interesting physical features in higher-point functions. We also argue that the Schwinger-Keldysh collapse and KMS conditions, implemented by the grSK geometry, continue to hold even in the presence of such singularities. For charged black holes above a critical charge, we furthermore demonstrate that the energy density operator does not possess an exponentially growing mode, associated with ‘pole-skipping’, from one such apparent singularity. Our analysis suggests that the connection between the scrambling physics of black holes and energy transport has, at best, a limited domain of validity.

Non-Richtmyer–Meshkov instability ejecta production based on shallow bubble collapse

The study of shock-driven ejecta production has focused on Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) growth from geometric features of the material surface. Extensive study of this mechanism under both single- and multiple-shock conditions has found that the ejected mass tends to be closely associated with the shocked surface phase, and its temperature is not dramatically greater than the hydrodynamic shock temperature of the bulk. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a new ejecta production mechanism that can occur under multiple-shock conditions based on the collapse of bubbles near the free surface of the material. This mechanism produces ejected mass that is much greater in quantity than observed in the RMI case. The particles are much hotter than predicted by the shock Hugoniot state, and the ejected mass does not appear to be strongly dependent upon initial surface finish. The ejecta source extends into the material with no clear remaining free surface. We name this mechanism Shallow Bubble Collapse (SBC) and discuss the conditions under which it activates. We demonstrate resolved modeling methods that enable the calculation, design, and study of SBC as a mechanism and perform a series of experiments to compare with the models. Under some multiple-shock conditions, SBC ejection produces ten times more ejected mass than RMI growth.

Particle dynamics and geometric optics in Chern–Simons black holes

Highlights: • Black holes in Chern–Simons modified gravity have been studied. • The effects of the coupling constant of the Chern–Simons gravity on some physical quantities have been investigated. • The dependence of Hawking mass and Penrose process on the coupling constant is studied. • Rotation of the polarization vector is also studied for dependence on the Chern–Simons coupling constant. In this paper we study the effects of the coupling constant of the Chern–Simons modified gravity on some physical properties of black holes. The Hawking mass is one of the proposed definitions of quasilocal mass. We find that, for slowly rotating Chern–Simons black holes, the Hawking mass is independent of the coupling constant. Next, we show the dependence on the centre of mass energy, for two neutral colliding particles, of coupling constant and the rotation parameter. We also investigate energy extraction through Penrose process and find that the energy gain and efficiency of the Penrose process are independent of this coupling constant. Rotation of the polarization vector is also studied for dependence on the Chern–Simons coupling constant.

Error-Detectable Bosonic Entangling Gates with a Noisy Ancilla

Bosonic quantum error correction has proven to be a successful approach for extending the coherence of quantum memories, but to execute deep quantum circuits, high-fidelity gates between encoded qubits are needed. To that end, we present a family of error-detectable two-qubit gates for a variety of bosonic encodings. From a new geometric framework based on a “Bloch sphere” of bosonic operators, we construct ZZ L ⁡(θ) and exponential-swap(θ) gates for the binomial, four-legged cat, dual-rail, and several other bosonic codes. The gate Hamiltonian is simple to engineer, requiring only a programmable beam splitter between two bosonic qubits and an ancilla dispersively coupled to one qubit. This Hamiltonian can be realized in circuit QED hardware with ancilla transmons and microwave cavities. The proposed theoretical framework was developed for circuit QED but is generalizable to any platform that can effectively generate this Hamiltonian. Crucially, one can also detect first-order errors in the ancilla and the bosonic qubits during the gates. We show that this allows one to reach error-detected gate fidelities at the 0.01% level with today’s hardware, limited only by second-order hardware errors.

A Review on Metallic Alloys Fabrication Using Elemental Powder Blends by Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition Process

The laser powder directed energy deposition process is a metal additive manufacturing technique, which can fabricate metal parts with high geometric and material flexibility. The unique feature of in-situ powder feeding makes it possible to customize the elemental composition using elemental powder mixture during the fabrication process. Thus, it can be potentially applied to synthesize industrial alloys with low cost, modify alloys with different powder mixtures, and design novel alloys with location-dependent properties using elemental powder blends as feedstocks. This paper provides an overview of using a laser powder directed energy deposition method to fabricate various types of alloys by feeding elemental powder blends. At first, the advantage of laser powder directed energy deposition in manufacturing metal alloys is described in detail. Then, the state-of-the-art research and development in alloys fabricated by laser powder directed energy deposition through a mix of elemental powders in multiple categories is reviewed. Finally, critical technical challenges, mainly in composition control are discussed for future development.

Exact Landau Level Description of Geometry and Interaction in a Flatband

Flatbands appear in many condensed matter systems, including the two-dimensional electron gas in a high magnetic field, correlated materials, and moiré heterostructures. They are characterized by intrinsic geometric properties such as the Berry curvature and Fubini-Study metric. The influence of the band geometry on electron-electron interaction is difficult to understand analytically because the geometry is in general nonuniform in momentum space. In this work, we study the topological flatband of Chern number C = 1 with a momentum-dependent but positive definite Berry curvature that fluctuates in sync with Fubini-Study metric. We derive an exact correspondence between such ideal flatbands and Landau levels and show that the band geometry fluctuation gives rise to a new type of interaction in the corresponding Landau levels that depends on the center of mass of two particles. We characterize such interactions by generalizing the usual Haldane pseudopotentials. This mapping gives exact zero-energy ground states for short-ranged repulsive generalized pseudopotentials in flatbands, in analogy to fractional quantum Hall systems. Driving the center-of-mass interactions beyond the repulsive regime leads to a dramatic reconstruction of the ground states towards gapless phases. The generalized pseudopotential could be a useful basis for future numerical studies.

A canonical purification for the entanglement wedge cross-section

In AdS/CFT we consider a class of bulk geometric quantities inside the entanglement wedge called reflected minimal surfaces. The areas of these surfaces are dual to the entanglement entropy associated to a canonical purification (the GNS state) that we dub the reflected entropy. From the bulk point of view, we show that half the area of the reflected minimal surface gives a reinterpretation of the notion of the entanglement wedge cross-section. We prove some general properties of the reflected entropy and introduce a novel replica trick in CFTs for studying it. The duality is established using a recently introduced approach to holographic modular flow. We also consider an explicit holographic construction of the canonical purification, introduced by Engelhardt and Wall; the reflected minimal surfaces are simply RT surfaces in this new spacetime. We contrast our results with the entanglement of purification conjecture, and finally comment on the continuum limit where we find a relation to the split property: the reflected entropy computes the von Neumann entropy of a canonical splitting type-I factor introduced by Doplicher and Longo.

Durability of plasma sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings with controlled properties part Ⅱ: Effects of geometrical curvature

The present investigation elucidates the effects of substrate curvature on the durability of Air Plasma Sprayed (APS) Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs). Traditionally, planar disk specimens are utilized in Furnace Cycle Testing (FCT). In most cases, delamination is initiated at the disk's free edge and then propagates along the TBC-bond coat interface. However, in turbine components (e.g., blades/vanes), they lack significant free edges and the coatings are deposited on non-flat surfaces of varying radii of curvature. These geometrical discrepancies imply significant differences in the stress states as compared to planar disk specimens. Therefore, the part geometry inevitably affects the TBC failure mechanisms in the turbine system, and consequently influences TBC durability. Nevertheless, these effects have not been fully explored in the past, despite the anecdotal knowledge which suggests the leading edge of turbine blades to be one of the most common failure/spallation locations. Here in this study, representative TBC systems were deposited onto superalloy disks with flat substrate and rods with curved substrate. The experimental results from FCT suggest TBC durability on rods is significantly lower than when sprayed on disks. Furthermore, the durability of TBCs on rods appears to increase with higher porosity, which is contradictory to reported trends for TBCs on disks. In addition, the effects of various bond coats are not consistent with those observed in disks. To clarify the underlying effects of curved geometries, detailed stress analyses were performed. They revealed a state of thermal stresses which is unique to curved geometries. It was found that TBC on rods experience tensile radial stresses as well as tensile hoop stresses during the cooling. These stresses result in a complex interplay in failure processes in rods, which explains the different observed trends in the durability from those obtained with disks.

Quantum Effect on the Ground State of the Triple-Perovskite Ba 3 MNb 2 O 9 (M = Co, Ni, and Mn) with Triangular-Lattice

As the simplest example of geometrical frustration, the two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet exhibits the mismatch between the lattice geometry and spin-exchange interaction, which has been the subject of intensive studies due to its exotic quantum phenomena. In this work, we performed detailed studies of the magnetic structures and spin wave excitations by neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the triple-perovskite oxides Ba 3 MNb 2 O 9 (M = Co, Ni, and Mn) with triangular-lattice geometry. The interplay between the frustrated interaction and easy-plane/axis anisotropy gives rise to two magnetic phase transition temperatures for Ba 3 CoNb 2 O 9 (Ba 3 MnNb 2 O 9 ) and only one for Ba 3 NiNb 2 O 9 . The linear spin-wave theory +1/S calculations indicate that both spatial dimensionality and the spin size have a significant impact on the strength of quantum fluctuations, which lead to their different magnetic ground states and exotic physical properties. Moreover, the effects of the thermal fluctuations are presented for Ba 3 NiNb 2 O 9 .

Coarse grained simulation of convectively driven turbulent mixing, transition, and turbulence decay

Accurate predictions with quantifiable uncertainties are essential to many practical turbulent flow applications exhibiting extreme geometrical complexity and broad ranges of length and time scales. Under-resolved computer simulations are typically unavoidable in such applications, and implicit large-eddy simulation (ILES) often becomes the effective strategy. In this work, we focus on assessing ILES initialized with well-characterized 25 6 3 homogeneous isotropic turbulence datasets generated with direct numerical simulation (DNS). ILES solutions based on the LANL xRAGE code are studied as function of resolution for 6 4 3 , 12 8 3 , 25 6 3 , and 51 2 3 grids. ILES performance of new directionally-unsplit high-order numerical hydrodynamics algorithms in xRAGE is examined in this context. Compared to the initial 25 6 3 DNS, we find longer inertial subranges and higher turbulence Reynolds number (Re) for 25 6 3 and 51 2 3 xRAGE — attributed to having linked DNS (Navier–Stokes based) solutions to nominally inviscid (higher Re) Euler based ILES solutions. For fixed 25 6 3 resolution, we find that significantly larger simulated turbulence Re can be achieved with the higher-order unsplit (vs. split) discretizations.
