Abstract The interaction between creep and fatigue damage in Ni‐base superalloy CMSX‐8 was explored using a sequential workflow that decouples creep and fatigue steps to quantify how accumulated creep damage interacts with subsequent isothermal low‐cycle fatigue (LCF) and vice versa. Two workflows were considered: creep followed by LCF and LCF followed by creep. For the first workflow, the subsequent LCF was evaluated at temperatures of 20°C, 750°C, and 1100°C. It was found that the extent of deleterious interaction of prior creep on LCF depended on increasing subsequent fatigue test temperature. For the LCF followed by creep, fatigue tests were first conducted at 20°C and 1100°C to 60% of life, and then creep was conducted at 800°C, where primary creep is promoted, or 900°C, where primary creep is absent. LCF damage accumulated at 1100°C accelerated creep and decreased ductility, while fatigue damage at room temperature had minimal effect on the creep behavior.
Summary We aimed to identify genomic traits of transitions to ectomycorrhizal ecology within the Boletales by comparing the genomes of 21 symbiotrophic species with their saprotrophic brown‐rot relatives. Gene duplication rate is constant along the backbone of Boletales phylogeny with large loss events in several lineages, while gene family expansion sharply increased in the late Miocene, mostly in the Boletaceae. Ectomycorrhizal Boletales have a reduced set of plant cell‐wall‐degrading enzymes (PCWDEs) compared with their brown‐rot relatives. However, the various lineages retain distinct sets of PCWDEs, suggesting that, over their evolutionary history, symbiotic Boletales have become functionally diverse. A smaller PCWDE repertoire was found in Sclerodermatineae. The gene repertoire of several lignocellulose oxidoreductases (e.g. laccases) is similar in brown‐rot and ectomycorrhizal species, suggesting that symbiotic Boletales are capable of mild lignocellulose decomposition. Transposable element (TE) proliferation contributed to the higher evolutionary rate of genes encoding effector‐like small secreted proteins, proteases, and lipases. On the other hand, we showed that the loss of secreted CAZymes was not related to TE activity but to DNA decay. This study provides novel insights on our understanding of the mechanisms influencing the evolutionary diversification of symbiotic boletes.

Aging-related yield decline in Miscanthus × giganteus (miscanthus) remains a major constraint to sustainable biomass production. This study evaluated how nitrogen (N) management and soil fertility influence yield-component traits and productivity in aging miscanthus. Trials were conducted at two sites established in 2008 at the University of Illinois Energy Farm, Urbana, IL. (i) The Sun Grant trial received 0, 60, and 120 kg N ha−1 annually until 2015. Starting 2021, half of each plot received 60 or 120 kg N ha−1, resulting in six legacy-contemporary treatments: 0N–0N, 0N–120N, 60N–0N, 60N–60N, 120N–0N, 120N–120N. (ii) The Energy Farm trial remained unfertilized until 2014, when one half of each plot received 56 kg N ha−1, forming two treatments: 0N–0N, 0N–56N. Sun Grant trial results showed N fertilization increased tiller density (tillers m−2) and tiller weight (g tiller−1) in juvenile to early-mature miscanthus (2011–2015). After N withdrawal, both traits declined (20 % and 40 %), though legacy effects persisted in tiller weight in the aging stands (2020–2023). Contemporary N had little effect on tiller density but increased tiller weight by 34 %–77 %, resulting in 23 %–106 % higher machine-harvested biomass yield in 0–120N, 60-60N, and 120-120N plots. At the Energy Farm trial, 0N–56N plots yielded 59 %–108 % more biomass than 0N–0N. Soil total N increased (Sun Grant: 47 % by 2020; Energy Farm: 58 % by 2023), while Mehlich-3 P (42 %–44 %) and K (21 %–46 %) declined. These findings identify tiller weight as a key determinant of biomass yield in aging miscanthus and highlight the need for P and K management for long-term productivity.
Here, we present a study of the temporal pre-pulse contrast degradation of high focused intensity pulses produced in CPA laser systems due to imperfections in amplifier design, alignment of amplifier components, and crystal inhomogeneity. Using an extended cross-polarized imaging technique, we demonstrate the presence of multiple crystal domains inside Ti:sapphire slabs with ≈10 cm diameter. Furthermore, the results of our numerical calculations show that crystalline c-axis orientation inhomogeneity caused by these crystal domains can lead to generation of pre-pulses with relative contrast >10 -10 within several picoseconds before the main pulse. In a multiple-slab amplifier head configuration sometimes used in high repetition rate systems, the misalignment of the amplifier slabs crystalline c-axes with respect to each other can lead to the generation of pre-pulses with relative contrast as high as 10 -6 , depending on the magnitude of misalignment.
The planned Electron Ion Collider (EIC) has an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) which provides Strong Hadron Cooling (SHC) in order to control the beam quality of the hadrons. This requires that the electron beam delivered to the cooling section be minimally perturbed by the preceding bunch stretcher necessary in the 100 GeV configuration. This paper evaluates different stretcher designs for the SHC ERL, based on current design requirements.
