Atmospheric-Fade-Tolerant Tracking and Pointing in Wireless Optical Communication

An acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) system, under development at the time of reporting the information for this article, is intended to enable a terminal in a free-space optical communication system to continue to aim its transmitting laser beam toward a receiver at a remote terminal when the laser beacon signal from the remote terminal temporarily fades or drops out of sight altogether. Such fades and dropouts can be caused by adverse atmospheric conditions (e.g., rain or clouds). They can also occur when intervening objects block the line of sight between terminals as a result of motions of those objects or of either or both terminals

Design of a 2.5 Gbps Optical Transmitter for the International Space Station

A high data rate laser transmitter assembly (LTA) has been designed as the source for an optical free-space communication link between the International Space Station and the 1-meter Optical Communications Telescope Laboratory (OCTL) to be built at the Table Mountain Facility (TMF, Wrightwood, CA).

Dissipation Enables Strongly Detuning-Dependent Interference in Pulsed Dynamical Decoupling

One of the defining features of pulsed dynamical decoupling is its suppression of a driven qubit's sensitivity to static detuning errors between the drive field and qubit resonance. In this paper, we show that dissipation, in the form of excited-state decay, can change this behavior entirely, producing an interference signal with a strong detuning dependence. This signal arises from decay during driven evolution and relies on coherence retained by the qubit after such a decay event. We develop analytical and numerical models that capture the underlying mechanism and observe this same dissipation-induced detuning dependence experimentally in both a free-space strontium atom interferometer and a superconducting transmon qubit system. We also use this dissipation-induced detuning dependence as the basis for a new spectroscopic technique called Dissipative Carr-Purcell Spectroscopy (DCPS) and compare it with a traditional Ramsey sequence. Our results establish a regime of pulsed dynamical decoupling in which dissipation reshapes, rather than merely degrades, coherent control, and we expect these dynamics to be relevant to a wide range of quantum systems.

Acquisition, Tracking, and Pointing Using Earth Thermal Images for Deep Space Optical Communications

The feasibility of using long wavelength Earth thermal (infrared) images for telescope tracking/pointing application. for both Deep Space Free- pace Optical Communications has been investigated and is reported her. The advantage of this technology rests on using full Earth images in this band, which yield more accurate estimates of geometric centroids than that of Earth images in the visible band. Another major advantage is that these images are nearly independent of Earth phase angle. The results of the study show that at a Mars range, with currently available sensors, a noise equivalent angle of 10 to 150 nanoradians and a bias error of better than 80 nanoradians can be obtained. This enables precise pointing of the optical communications beam for high data rate links.
