Fastening hardware to honeycomb panels

Adhesive bonding reduces likelihood of skin failure due to excessive forces or torques by utilizing an adhesive to honeycomb skin. Concept is useful in other applications of composites such as aircraft, automobiles, and home appliances.

Retaining Ring Fastener for Solar Panels

Simple articulating linkage secures solar panels into supporting framework. Five element linkage collapses into W-shape for easy placement into framework, then expands to form rectangle of same dimensions as those of panel.

Padded Allen Wrench Grips Fastener

Addition of PTFE pressure pad increases utility of hexagonal socket wrench. Pad presses against opposing inside socket walls, causing frictional force that retains socket-head screw against gravitational and handling forces. Developed for spacecraft repairs, tool is useful wherever tight clearance prevents insertion or removal of screw by hand.

Blind-Side, High-Temperature Fastener Lock

Formed-in-place staple provides positive mechanical lock. Post-supported, advanced carbon/carbon standoff panels, currently under consideration as alternate thermal protection system for Shuttle orbiter, locking feature applicable to temperatures of 1,600 degrees F (870 degrees C) and higher and employable after panel installed, resulting in blind application. Blind-side locking technique employs wire staple inserted into grooves in post, formed in place by ramped portion of post grooves. This splays out wire ends that move into castellated end of grommet, mechanically locking post and grommet against relative rotation. Splayed ends provide mechanical lock to prevent wire from falling out.

Quick-Connect Heavy-Duty Fastener

Attaching device combines fast connection and disconnection with high strength. T-shaped stud engages groove in receptacle after one-quarter turn. Further turning tightens nut on receptacle. Like quarter-turn attaching devices, connected and disconnected quickly. Like threaded devices, adjusted to desired preload, withstand high loads, and accommodate wide range of grip lengths.

Dimpling Tools Would Form Fastener Neatly

Proposed set of tools neatly dimple cup washer to prevent screw from turning in mounting hole. Two dimples required, one leaning outward to grip recess in mounting hole and one leaning inward to grip recess in screw-head. Tools do not cause cracks and tears. Substitute die-forming process for hammer-and-center-punch process. De-forming process requires less skill and gives results of greater quality and consistency.

Spline screw payload fastening system

A system for coupling an orbital replacement unit (ORU) to a space station structure via the actions of a robot and/or astronaut is described. This system provides mechanical and electrical connections both between the ORU and the space station structure and between the ORU and the ORU and the robot/astronaut hand tool. Alignment and timing features ensure safe, sure handling and precision coupling. This includes a first female type spline connector selectively located on the space station structure, a male type spline connector positioned on the orbital replacement unit so as to mate with and connect to the first female type spline connector, and a second female type spline connector located on the orbital replacement unit. A compliant drive rod interconnects the second female type spline connector and the male type spline connector. A robotic special end effector is used for mating with and driving the second female type spline connector. Also included are alignment tabs exteriorally located on the orbital replacement unit for berthing with the space station structure. The first and second female type spline connectors each include a threaded bolt member having a captured nut member located thereon which can translate up and down the bolt but are constrained from rotation thereabout, the nut member having a mounting surface with at least one first type electrical connector located on the mounting surface for translating with the nut member. At least one complementary second type electrical connector on the orbital replacement unit mates with at least one first type electrical connector on the mounting surface of the nut member. When the driver on the robotic end effector mates with the second female type spline connector and rotates, the male type spline connector and the first female type spline connector lock together, the driver and the second female type spline connector lock together, and the nut members translate up the threaded bolt members carrying the first type electrical connector up to the complementary second type connector for interconnection therewith.

Probe-And-Socket Fasteners For Robotic Assembly

Self-alignment and simplicity of actuation make mechanism amenable to robotic assembly. Includes socket, mounted on structure at worksite, and probe, mounted on piece of equipment to be attached to structure at socket. Probe-and-socket mechanism used in conjunction with fixed target aiding in placement of end effector of robot during grasping, and with handle or handles on structure. Intended to enable robot to set up workstation in hostile environment. Workstation then used by astronaut, aquanaut, or other human, spending minimum time in environment. Human concentrates on performing quality work rather than on setting up equipment, with consequent reduction of risk.

Quality Audit in the Fastener Industry

Both the financial and quality communities rely on audits to verify customers records. The financial community is highly structured around three categories of risk, INHERENT RISK, CONTROL RISK, and DETECTION RISK. Combined, the product of these three categories constitute the AUDIT RISK. The financial community establishes CONTROL RISK based in large part on a systems level understanding of the process flow. This system level understanding is best expressed in a flowchart. The quality community may be able to adopt this structure and thereby reduce cost while maintaining and enhancing quality. The quality community should attempt to flowchart the systems level quality process before beginning substantive testing. This theory needs to be applied in several trial cases to prove or disprove this hypothesis

Random Vibration and Torque Tests of Fasteners Secured With Locking Cable, Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) Rubber, and Closed Cell Foam to Support the Launch of STS-82

During a walkdown of the Space Transportation System (STS) orbiter for the 82nd Space Shuttle flight (STS-82), technicians found several safety cables for bolts with missing or loose ferrules. Typically, two or three bolts are secured with a cable which passes through one of the holes in the head of each bolt and a ferrule is crimped on each end of the cable to prevent it from coming out of the holes. The purpose of the cable is to prevent bolts from rotating should they become untightened. Other bolts are secured with either a locking cable or wire which is covered with RTV and foam. The RTV and foam would have to be removed to inspect for missing or loose ferrules. To determine whether this was necessary, vibration and torque test fixtures and tests were made to determine whether or not bolts with missing or loose ferrules would unloosen. These tests showed they would not, and the RTV and foam was not removed.

A Faster Fastener

A licensing agreement between Marshall Space Flight Center and M&A Screw and Machineworks has brought the quick connect nut to the commerical market. Originally designed as part of a project seeking in-space assembly techniques, the quick connect nut is secured around a bolt merely by pushing it onto the bolt and giving it a single twist. Applications for the nuts include oil drilling platforms, mining industry, and other practices that rely on speedy assembly for success.

Vibration-Resistant Fastener

An engineer at Philips Broadband Networks (PBN) tested the Spiralock thread based on information he found in NASA Tech Briefs. After testing the product, PBN began to use it in most of its products, eliminating an installation problem and reducing production costs. Spiralock, manufactured by Detroit Tool Industries, is a superfastener NASA tested for use in the Space Shuttle engines that resists great shock and vibration.

Preparation Torque Limit for Composites Joined with Mechanical Fasteners

Current design guidelines for determining torque ranges for composites are based on tests and analysis from isotropic materials. Properties of composites are not taken into account. No design criteria based upon a systematic analytical and test analyses is available. This paper is to study the maximum torque load a composite component could carry prior to any failure. Specifically, the torque-tension tests are conducted. NDT techniques including acoustic emission, thermography and photomicroscopy are also utilized to characterize the damage modes.

Reduced Dependence on Redundant Fasteners in Secondary-Bonded Composite Structures Using Modified Epoxy Matrix Resins

This report describes a sub-set of over 20 experiments conducted to optimize materials and processes to maximize mechanical properties of the assembled joint. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to measure the chemical state of the ER surface after primary cure. Laminates were fabricated with various HR and ER layer thicknesses, inspected using ultrasonic testing, and mechanically tested to measure fracture toughness.
