Using Tabulated Experimental Data to Drive an Orthotropic Elasto-Plastic Three-Dimensional Model for Impact Analysis

An orthotropic elasto-plastic-damage three-dimensional model with tabulated input has been developed to analyze the impact response of composite materials. The theory has been implemented as MAT 213 into a tailored version of LS-DYNA being developed under a joint effort of the FAA and NASA and has the following features: (a) the theory addresses any composite architecture that can be experimentally characterized as an orthotropic material and includes rate and temperature sensitivities, (b) the formulation is applicable for solid as well as shell element implementations and utilizes input data in a tabulated form directly from processed experimental data, (c) deformation and damage mechanics are both accounted for within the material model, (d) failure criteria are established that are functions of strain and damage parameters, and mesh size dependence is included, and (e) the theory can be efficiently implemented into a commercial code for both sequential and parallel executions. The salient features of the theory as implemented in LS-DYNA are illustrated using a widely used composite - the T800S/3900-2B[P2352W-19] BMS8-276 Rev-H-Unitape fiber/resin unidirectional composite. First, the experimental tests to characterize the deformation, damage and failure parameters in the material behavior are discussed. Second, the MAT213 input model and implementation details are presented with particular attention given to procedures that have been incorporated to ensure that the yield surfaces in the rate and temperature dependent plasticity model are convex. Finally, the paper concludes with a validation test designed to test the stability, accuracy and efficiency of the implemented model.

Design of Modular Test Facility for Particle/sCO2 Heat Exchanger Evaluation

Heliogen has designed a 1.3 MW particle and supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) test loop to retire technical and manufacturing risks. The data from this facility will be used to validate near commercial-scale particle heat exchanger modules. The heat exchanger is scaled to capture all features of the full-scale modules. Testing will be conducted with CARBOBEAD HSP 16/30, a larger particle size than other recent testing. The system was designed to ASME codes with the constraint that sCO2 piping and other major components are stainless steels.

New Stagnation Arc Jet Model Design for Testing ADEPT 3-D Carbon Cloth

The ADEPT concept has been considered as an entry, descent and landing system to enable Human Mars class missions. Ground rules for the Mars studies required aerocapture, orbit, and then entry. The design utilizes a 3-D woven carbon cloth fabric as both heatshield and primary structure and design guidelines required 6 layers remaining after all entry events. The peak heating predicted for the ADEPT carbon cloth was 35 Wcm2 and resulting temperatures were predicted to be 1400K. Predictions for carbon mass loss were performed using equilibrium thermochemistry, which is only accurate for T2000K. Carbon oxidation is kinetically controlled at T2000K, and mass loss drops off considerably from equilibrium values. Design of the cloth thickness and mass would be significantly reduced if kinetics were considered. This effort was to design a stagnation test article design that could be used in the AHF with varying levels of oxygen where the results could be used to develop an engineering model to describe the recession rate of the carbon as a function of the partial pressure of monotomic oxygen.

Preliminary EDS Liquid Sample Adapter Design Assurance Testing

A new liquid sample adapter design for the Explosive Destruction Systems has been developed. The design features a semi-transparent fluoropolymer tube coupled to the vessel high pressure sample valve with a closing quick connect fitting. The sample tubes are the pressure-limiting component. The tubes were hydrostatically tested to establish failure characteristics and pressure limits at ambient and operational temperatures. A group of tubes from two manufacturing lots were tested to determine the consistency of the commercial part. An upper pressure limit was determined for typical operations.

Design and test of a four channel motor for electromechanical flight control actuation

To provide a suitable electromagnetic torque summing approach to flight control system redundancy, a four channel motor capable of sustaining full performance after any two credible failures was designed, fabricated, and tested. The design consists of a single samarium cobalt permanent magnet rotor with four separate three phase windings arrayed in individual stator quadrants around the periphery. Trade studies established the sensitivities of weight and performance to such parameters as design speed, winding pattern, number of poles, magnet configuration, and strength. The motor electromagnetically sums the torque of the individual channels on a single rotor and eliminate complex mechanical gearing arrangements.

X-29 flight - Acid test for design predictions

The X-29 flight test data are being disseminated to interested industrial and military users as fast as it becomes available. The aircraft is extensively instrumented with accelerometers and pressure sensors and optical sensors for measuring wing deflection. The thoroughness of preflight preparations permitted a rapid advance through initial test checkpoints, which have both confirmed many predictions and revealed several discrepancies. The flight envelope had been expanded to Mach 1.1 and an altitude of 40,000 ft by December 1985. Notably, the X-29 has provided in-flight data which could not be faithfully depicted in a simulator, e.g., flare procedures during landing, and has shown that the stability adjustments, although adequate for controlling the aircraft, are not rapid enough to offer a satisfactory margin of harmony. The tests are now being performed in the transonic regime, where supercritical airfoil and forward swept wing drag reduction become significant factors.

Drive-train dynamics technology - State-of-the-art and design of a test facility for advanced development

A program for the development and verification of drive-train dynamic technology is described along with its basis and the results expected from it. A central feature of this program is a drive-train test facility designed for the testing and development of advanced drive-train components, including shaft systems, dampers, and couplings. Previous efforts in designing flexible dynamic drive-train systems are reviewed, and the present state of the art is briefly summarized. The design of the test facility is discussed with major attention given to the formulation of the test-rig concept, dynamic scaling of model shafts, and the specification of design parameters. Specific efforts envisioned for the test facility are briefly noted, including evaluations of supercritical test shafts, stability thresholds for various sources and types of instabilities that can exist in shaft systems, effects of structural flexibility on the dynamic performance of dampers, and methods for vibration control in two-level and three-level flexible shaft systems.

Optical test unit design for the direct detection laser tranceiver program

The Optical Test Unit (OTU) for the NASA Direct Detection Laser Tranceiver (DDLT) Experiment was designed to perform a wide variety of electrical and optical tests with minimum cost and risk. Choosing instruments that could do their own processing and carefully examining each step of the integration and test sequence helped reduce the cost and complexity of the system, allowing us to meet a very ambitious schedule. For some tests, less elegant schemes can be used than the traditional system test methods, while still maintaining the integrity of the test system. This paper explores the problems encountered and options that were available in designing the system test equipment for this optical communication system.
