Data Analytics and Visualization of Energy Systems for Critical Infrastructure Insights

Modernization of energy systems including transportation facilities provides opportunities for increased efficiency, expansion of commerce and meeting industry and federal goals. A significant increase in electrical demand is projected to meet these needs, which concentrates at facilities such as airports. For example, Xcel Energy working with two airports in their service area recently published information projecting an up to fivefold increase in electricity demand in the next 25 years [1]. Concurrently, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently surveyed 30 commercial service airports identifying more than 300 outages of more than 5 minutes between 2015 and 2022 [2]. Power, reliability, and resilience planning becomes more important to safely maintain operations and the flow of commerce with fewer energy carriers providing necessary energy to safely move passengers and goods. NREL proposes to develop methodologies to allow owners, utilities, and federal agencies to dynamically analyze, forecast, and manage energy loads at airports, focused upon maintaining the flow of commerce in an efficient, sustainable, and resilient way. To address these energy challenges, a suite of technologies and methodologies can be leveraged to validate concepts, inform design, de-risk solutions and optimize energy management during deployment. These technologies include digitalization of energy systems, microgrid methodologies, and related energy technologies for building and vehicle loads. Automated pipeline processing X-ray diffraction data from dynamic compression experiments on the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III

Presented and discussed here is the implementation of a software solution that provides prompt X-ray diffraction data analysis during fast dynamic compression experiments conducted within the dynamic diamond anvil cell technique. It includes efficient data collection, streaming of data and metadata to a high-performance cluster (HPC), fast azimuthal data integration on the cluster, and tools for controlling the data processing steps and visualizing the data using the DIOPTAS software package. This data processing pipeline is invaluable for a great number of studies. The potential of the pipeline is illustrated with two examples of data collected on ammonia–water mixtures and multiphase mineral assemblies under high pressure. The pipeline is designed to be generic in nature and could be readily adapted to provide rapid feedback for many other X-ray diffraction techniques, e.g. large-volume press studies, in situ stress/strain studies, phase transformation studies, chemical reactions studied with high-resolution diffraction etc.

RCSB Protein Data bank: Tools for visualizing and understanding biological macromolecules in 3D

Abstract Now in its 52nd year of continuous operations, the Protein Data Bank (PDB) is the premiere open‐access global archive housing three‐dimensional (3D) biomolecular structure data. It is jointly managed by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB) partnership. The Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data Bank (RCSB PDB) is funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and US Department of Energy and serves as the US data center for the wwPDB. RCSB PDB is also responsible for the security of PDB data in its role as wwPDB‐designated Archive Keeper. Every year, RCSB PDB serves tens of thousands of depositors of 3D macromolecular structure data (coming from macromolecular crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and micro‐electron diffraction). The RCSB PDB research‐focused web portal ( RCSB.org ) makes PDB data available at no charge and without usage restrictions to many millions of PDB data consumers around the world. The RCSB PDB training, outreach, and education web portal ( PDB101.RCSB.org ) serves nearly 700 K educators, students, and members of the public worldwide. This invited Tools Issue contribution describes how RCSB PDB (i) is organized; (ii) works with wwPDB partners to process new depositions; (iii) serves as the wwPDB‐designated Archive Keeper; (iv) enables exploration and 3D visualization of PDB data via RCSB.org ; and (v) supports training, outreach, and education via PDB101.RCSB.org . New tools and features at RCSB.org are presented using examples drawn from high‐resolution structural studies of proteins relevant to treatment of human cancers by targeting immune checkpoints.

Visualization for Insight and Data Analysis in Energy Research

This talk explores how advanced visualization technologies are transforming analytical reasoning and knowledge discovery in energy research, drawing on recent work at the National Laboratory of the Rockies' Computational Science Center. Through a series of scientific case studies, we demonstrate how immersive and high-resolution visualization environments enable scientists and engineers to identify previously unseen patterns and features - insights that often remain hidden in traditional desktop-based analysis. By embedding richer information into interactive analytics tools, these approaches support the exploration of complex, multivariate parameter spaces, where interaction itself catalyzes understanding. Beyond capability, we emphasize the critical role of visualization design grounded in perception and cognition, showing how visual encodings directly influence analytical outcomes. Spanning applications from materials science to integrated energy systems, these visualization approaches accelerate innovation and improve decision-making by enabling deeper, more reliable insight into increasingly complex energy data.

Scoreboard

Emerging HPC machines have given rise to enhanced compute power that far outstrips the machine's ability to save large scale results for post-processing. To combat this, in situ data analysis techniques are slowly being adopted. With in situ data management favoring workflows composed of multiple simulations and analyses connected in transit on heterogeneous machines, scientists and engineers need a tool that enables them to create data extracts, visualizations, and interactively monitor and steer their simulations. Scoreboard Phase II is a next generation analysis software that supports composite in transit workflows on heterogeneous architectures and restores interactivity to in situ data analysis through simulation monitoring and computational steering. Scoreboard provides a simulation dashboard with graphs of metrics over time, controls for setting custom simulation steering parameters, controls for managing the set of data extracts being produced in the simulation, as well as the ability to explore data extracts, all from a web browser. Realizing the vision outlined in this project required research into making a system that integrates end to end from simulations all the way to the user. In situ tools generally suffer from complexity and excessive software dependencies. Scoreboard, by contrast, is easy to build and integrate into simulation codes and it provides first class FORTRAN support. The Scoreboard library is capable of in situ and in transit data analysis that can produce data extracts commonly needed for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. Simulations can transparently stage data in transit to a Scoreboard Endpoint program, which can accept their data and produce the requested data extracts. This lets simulations return to their work while the Endpoint works on the analysis. Efficiently staging the data at scale was a topic of this research. Scoreboard provides the means to let the user manage data extracts and monitor/steer many simulations from a web browser. This area of the research focused on discovery of in transit network components to expose and control their steering parameters within an interactive browser-based user interface that includes: system topology, gathered metrics, notifications, dynamically-generated steering controls, and exploration of visualization data products.

Uncertainty Visualization Challenges in Decision Systems with Ensemble Data & Surrogate Models: Preprint

Uncertainty visualization is a key component in translating important insights from ensemble data into actionable decision-making by visually conveying various aspects of uncertainty within a system. With the recent advent of fast surrogate models for computationally expensive simulations, users can interact with more aspects of data spaces than ever before. However, the integration of ensemble data with surrogate models in a decision-making tool brings up new challenges for uncertainty visualization, namely how to reconcile and communicate the new and different types of uncertainties brought in by surrogates and how to utilize these new data estimates in actionable ways. In this work, we examine these issues as they relate to high-dimensional data visualization, the integration of discrete datasets and the continuous representations of those datasets, and the unique difficulties associated with systems that allow users to iterate between input and output spaces. We assess the role of uncertainty visualization in facilitating intuitive and actionable interaction with ensemble data and surrogate models, and highlight key challenges in this new frontier of computational simulation.

Alternatives to Contour Visualizations for Power Systems Data

Electrical grids are geographical and topological structures whose voltage states are challenging to represent accurately and efficiently for visual analysis. The current common practice is to use colored contour maps, yet these can misrepresent the data. We examine the suitability of four alternative visualization methods for depicting voltage data in a geographically dense distribution system-Voronoi polygons, H3 tessellations, S2 tessellations, and a network-weighted contour map. We find that Voronoi tessellations and network-weighted contour maps more accurately represent the statistical distribution of the data than regular contour maps.

Web-based Preprocessing and Visualization of 3D FIB Tomography Data for Nuclear Fuel Characterization

Three-dimensional (3D) focused ion beam (FIB) tomography enables reconstruction of internal nuclear fuel features that can't be fully evaluated through surface imaging alone. This capability supports characterization of fuel constituents and defects under thermal and irradiation conditions relevant to microreactor development. However, large tomography datasets can create data-handling, loading, and visualization challenges, especially when image-stack preparation and file conversion must be completed with separate tools. The Computational Ultraspatial Tomography Toolkit for High-Resolution Object Analysis Tools (CUTTRHOAT) is an open-source web application being developed to display FIB tomography datasets available through the Nuclear Research Data System (NRDS). The current alpha version requires prepared HDF5 datasets and has limited integrated data-preparation capabilities. This project improves CUTTHROAT by adding dataset-folder selection, automatic input detection, dataset scanning, missing-slice identification, blank-slice insertion, and image-stack-to-HDF5 conversion. Two applications will be compared: the baseline CUTTHROAT alpha workflow and the updated application containing the integrated data-handling and preprocessing functions. Evaluation will consider dataset detection accuracy, conversion success, loading time, rendering responsiveness, application stability, and user interaction. Preliminary results demonstrate successful loading of existing HDF5 files and converted image stacks, while testing also identified performance reductions caused by excessive blank-slice generation. The updated workflow reduces reliance on external preparation tools and supports more direct movement from image stacks to color-code 3D visualization. Future work includes refining missing-slice handling, integrating additional preprocessing functions, like a denoising feature, parsing TIFF metadata for automatic voxel scaling, and adding manual X, Y, and Z voxel-spacing inputs for PNG and JPEG.
