A GaN-based Four-Switch Buck-Boost Converter using Ripple Correlation Control for Maximum Power Point Tracking in Dynamic Deep Space Environments

As the demand for high-performance power conversion in spacecraft continues to grow and spacecraft mass and volume budgets become increasingly tight, it is essential to design DC-DC converters with higher efficiency and power density. Although photovoltaic (PV) efficiency has increased over time, solar irradiance and temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in deep space. This causes significant variations in the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array, which can decrease the overall system efficiency unless accounted for. Thus, it is imperative to track the MPP of the PV panels to maintain optimal efficiency. This paper presents the experimental development of a four-switch, GaN-based buck-boost converter with an implementation of the Ripple Correlation Control (RCC) MPPT algorithm for dynamic deep space environments. Due to the use of GaN HEMTs, the experimental system achieves better efficiency and power density compared to the previous state of the art implementations. A simulation of the prototype buck-boost converter was implemented in SaberRD (Synopsis), and a digital design of the RCC-based MPPT controller utilizing the StateAMS tool is presented. The simulation results show that this controller swiftly and precisely converged to the MPP of the source PV panels in a dynamic solar irradiance condition.

Low dose failures of hardened DC-DC power converters

Box-level total dose testing of the FOG (Fiber Optic Gyro) by IXSEA at ESA's GammabeamFacility were abruptly terminated at 8krad (Si) due to catastrophic failure (complete shutdown). This was unexpected because all components within the gyro were supposedly radiation tolerant. Further testing showed that the components responsible for the failure were two DC-DC converters, manufactured by Interpoint, that stopped regulating shortly before shutdown. This paper summarizes diagnostic test results for the converters to determine the underlying cause of the unexpected failure at low levels of radiation.

Total Ionizing Dose Effects on High Resolution (12-/14-bit) Analog-to-Digital Converters

This paper reports total dose radiation test results for high resolution 12-/14-bit A/D converters. Small changes in internal components can cause these devices to fail their specifications at relatively low total dose levels. Degradation of signal-to-noise ratio becomes increasingly importamt for high accuracy converters. Rebound effects in the thick-oxide MOS devices causes these responses to be different at low and high dose rates, which is a major concern for space applications.

Data Converters Performance at Extreme Temperatures

Space missions often require radiation and extreme-temperature hardened electronics to survive the harsh environments beyond earth's atmosphere. Traditional approaches to preserve electronics incorporate shielding, insulation and redundancy at the expense of power and weight. However, a novel way of bypassing these problems is the concept of evolutionary hardware. A reconfgurable device, consisting of several switches interconnected with analog/digital parts, is controlled by an evolutionary processor (EP). When the EP detects degradation in the circuit it sends signals to reconfgure the switches, thus forming a new circuit with the desired output. This concept has been developed since the mid-90s, but one problem remains - the EP cannot degrade substantially. For this reason, extensive testing at extreme temperatures (-180' to 120(deg)C) has been done on devices found on FPGA boards (taking the role of the EP) such as the Analog to Digital and the Digital to Analog Converter. Analysis of the results has shown that FPGA boards implementing EP with some compensation may be a practical solution to evolving circuits. This paper describes results on the tests of data converters at extreme temperatures.

Modeling and Mitigation of Multi-Loops Related Device Overvoltage in Three Level Active Neutral Point Clamped Converter

This paper establishes an analytical model for the device drain-source overvoltage related to the two loops in three level active neutral point clamped (3L-ANPC) converters. Taking into account the non-linear device output capacitance, two commonly used modulations are investigated in detail. The result shows that the line switching frequency device usually has higher overvoltage, and the switching speed of the high switching frequency device is not strongly influenced by the multiple loops. By keeping the non-active clamping switch off, the effect of the non-linear device output capacitance can be significantly mitigated, which helps reduce the overvoltage. Moreover, the loop inductance can be reduced with vertical loop layout and magnetic cancellation in PCB and busbar design. A 500 kVA 3L-ANPC converter using SiC MOSFETs is built and tested. The experimental results validate the overvoltage model of the two modulations as well as the busbar design. With the non-active clamping switch off, the overvoltage of both the high and line switching frequency devices is significantly reduced, which helps achieve higher switching speed.

Investigation into High Power Converter Topologies

The NESC commissioned NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to perform a study of high-power DC-DC converter topologies Why perform the study? • Several past contractor-led converter development programs have been plagued with development delays and cost overruns due to: • Poor initial design decisions • Complex requirements driving designs • Better inform government engineers about strengths and weaknesses of various topologies, learn about new topologies/design strategies. • Allow NASA to be better prepared for upcoming high power/high voltage power conversion systems work, such as Lunar and Martian surface missions, high power electric propulsion, as well as terrestrial systems, such as electrified aircraft. • Contractors often do not have the option to restart poor decisions – allows NASA to be better informed at the start of programs.

NASA's SUb-sonic Single Aft eNgine (SUSAN) aircraft is a concept aircraft whose architecture is that of a subsonic regional jet transport aircraft. SUSAN contains a single turbofan engine coupled to an electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP) system. To provide a path towards this goal, a 25% scale version of the SUSAN aircraft is being researched. A main component of the 25% power train is the Motor And Generator Intelligent Converter (MAGIC).
