CMOS Active Pixel Sensors for Low Power, Highly Miniaturized Imaging Systems

The complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel sensor (APS) technology has been developed over the past three years by NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and has reached a level of performance comparable to CCDs with greatly increased functionality but at a very reduced power level.

Noise and Electrical Characteristics below 10 K of small CHFET Circuits and Discrete Devices

This paper discusses the lates results of a continuing study of the properties of the complementary heterojunction field-effect transistor (CHFET) at 4K. The electrical characteristics, including the gate leakage current and the subthreshold transconductance, and the input-referred noise voltage for a new lot of discrete CHFETs is presented and discussed.

Single Lens Dual-Aperture 3D Imaging System: Color Modeling

In an effort to miniaturize a 3D imaging system, we created two viewpoints in a single objective lens camera. This was accomplished by placing a pair of Complementary Multi-band Bandpass Filters (CMBFs) in the aperture area. Two key characteristics about the CMBFs are that the passbands are staggered so only one viewpoint is opened at a time when a light band matched to that passband is illuminated, and the passbands are positioned throughout the visible spectrum, so each viewpoint can render color by taking RGB spectral images. Each viewpoint takes a different spectral image from the other viewpoint hence yielding a different color image relative to the other. This color mismatch in the two viewpoints could lead to color rivalry, where the human vision system fails to resolve two different colors. The difference will be closer if the number of passbands in a CMBF increases. (However, the number of passbands is constrained by cost and fabrication technique.) In this paper, simulation predicting the color mismatch is reported.

Radiation Tolerance Studies of Long Wavelength Infrared InAs/GaSb Detectors

In this work we investigated the effect of proton irradiation on the performance of long wavelength infrared (LWIR) InAs/GaSb photodiodes (λ(sub c) = 10.2µm) based on the complementary barrier infrared detector (CBIRD) design. We found that irradiation with 68MeV protons up to the total ionizing dose TID = 200 kRad results in only small (about 15%) decrease of the Quantum Efficiency and does not increase the operational bias of the photodiodes. However, the irradiation causes a significant increase of the dark current from j(sub d) = 5x10(exp -5) A/sq cm at V(sub b) = 0.1V and T = 80K to j(sub d) = 6x10(exp -3) A/sq cm at TID = 200 kRad. This change in the dark current mechanism can be attributed to the onset of surface leakage current, generated by the trap assisted tunneling processes in the proton displacement damage areas near the device sidewalls.

NACA Conference on Helicopters a Compilation of the Papers Presented at Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, Langley Field, Va., May 12 and 13, 1954

This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented at the NACA Conference on Helicopters held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory May 12 and 13, 1954. The primary purpose of this conference was to convey to the military services, their contractors, and others concerned with the design of helicopters the results of NACA research on helicopters and to provide those attending an opportunity to discuss the results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were presented at the conference in order to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee's more complete and formal reports . A list of the conferees is included.

Wedge immersed thermistor bolometer measures infrared radiation

Wedge immersed-thermistor bolometer measures infrared radiation in the atmosphere. The thermistor flakes are immersed by optical contact on a wedge-shaped germanium lens whose narrow dimension is clamped between two complementary wedge-shaped germanium blocks bonded with a suitable adhesive.

Variable word length encoder reduces TV bandwith requirements

Adaptive variable resolution encoding technique provides an adaptive compression pseudo-random noise signal processor for reducing television bandwidth requirements. Complementary processors are required in both the transmitting and receiving systems. The pretransmission processor is analog-to-digital, while the postreception processor is digital-to-analog.

Convective and radiative heat transfer during reentry and advanced techniques for their simulation

The use of shock tubes, ballistic ranges, and combinations thereof in simulation of convective and radiative heat loads has been described. The complementary nature and the highly independent techniques used in these facilities lend great strength to the research results where they agree. The shortcomings of these facilities are such that, if possible, both should be applied to important problems. When all-out performance is required, the combination of the two can clearly provide advantages. That these advantages are becoming more widely recognized is demonstrated by the construction of new faculties at Arnold Engineering Development Center and Boeing Company, Seattle, similar to those in service at Ames Research Center since the late 1950's.

Low-power ring counter drives high-level loads

Ring counter dissipates very low power in standby conditions, yet drives high-current loads on a low duty-factor basis. Complementary transistors are used so that in one selected stage both transistors are conducting while the transistors of the other stage are cut off.

Polarizing keys prevent mismatch of connector plugs and receptacles

Keying prevents mismatching of plugs and receptacles in connector patching of instrumentation involving several thousand leads. Each receptacle and plug contains three polarizing keys that must mate in a complementary mode before the connector pins and sockets will engage.

Prospects for manned Mars missions

Studies called "EMPIRE" (standing for Early Manned Planetary-Interplanetary Roundtrip Expeditions) were initiated early in 1962 by the Future Projects Office for the Marshall Space Flight Center. These and related studies by other NASA centers were intended to bring to light the technical problems associated with such missions. The emphasis of these studies was on single and multiple planetary fty-bys, with some consideration given to planetary orbital and landing missions. The time period considered was the early 1970's. The contractors were Aeronutronic Division (Philco-Ford Motor Company), Lockheed Missiles and Space Company and General Dynamics/Astronautics. Studies relating to the time period 1975-85 were initiated in early 1963, by contracts with General Dynamics/ Fort Worth and Douglas Aircraft Company. Follow-on EMPIRE studies were carried out by Lockheed and General Dynamics/Astronautics. In addition, studies were made of a Mars Excursion Module by Aeronutronic, a Mars Mission Module (MMM) by North American Aviation's Space and Information Division, and an Earth Return Module (ERM) by Lockheed under the direction of the Manned Spacecraft Center. Complementary to these efforts were studies initiated by the Ames Research Center early in 1963 for a Manned Mars Landing and Return Mission. These studies were conducted by North American Aviation and by the TRW Space Technology Laboratories.
