Melt Processing Pretreatment Effects on Enzymatic Depolymerization of Poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a common thermoplastic material, used in a wide variety of applications (i.e., bottles, fabrics, packaging, electronics, and automotive components). Increasing demand for PET has precipitated a need for improved recycling technology, especially for single-use PET waste. Recently, enzymatic depolymerization has shown promise as an environmentally responsible alternative for PET chemical recycling that yields economically useful products (e.g., terephthalic acid, adipic acid, and ethylene glycol). However, the depolymerization system still suffers from low rates on crystalline PET substrates, and effects of realistic waste streams are not known. In our work, PET waste is pretreated using an ultra-high-speed twin-screw extruder system. PET substrates were modified by various processing pretreatments to allow enzymes better access to depolymerize substrate materials. The effect of varying throughput and mechanical shear on structural properties of the PET waste was analyzed using molecular weight and thermal characterizations. These pretreated samples exhibit modifications in molecular weight, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, and specific surface area. The unpurified leaf-branch compost cutinase enzyme produced from the fed-batch fermentation of Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) was used in enzymatic depolymerization, where a faster reaction was observed as crystallinity was decreased and the specific surface area was increased. The rate of terephthalic acid production was also significantly higher for samples processed at lower mechanical shear with higher throughputs. As a result, this work demonstrates the potential for tailoring pretreatments in pursuit of faster and more energy efficient PET recycling using enzymes, with facile adaptation to the industrial scale for the circular economy.

Precision measurements of Higgs hadronic decay modes at the FCC-ee

The expected precision at the FCC-ee on the product $σ$ x $\mathcal{B} \large{(}H → b\bar{b}, c\bar{c}, s\bar{s}, gg\large{)}$ of Higgs boson production cross sections times branching ratios of hadronic decays is presented. This study provides the first comprehensive determination of all major hadronic Higgs decay modes in a combined fit at future $e^+e^−$ colliders, using both Higgs-strahlung $(ZH)$ and Vector boson fusion $(v\bar{v}H)$ production processes, with a full treatment of interference effects in the $v\bar{v}jj$ final state. It assumes four identical IDEA detectors collecting $e^+e^−$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 240 and 365 GeV. The combination of all channels across both energies, with full covariance between production and decay modes, yields a production cross-section times branching-ratio precision at the percent to per-mil level for the dominant hadronic final states $(b\bar{b}, c\bar{c}, gg)$. These results provide a comprehensive input to the determination of Higgs coupling projections at the FCC-ee, and they establish for the first time sensitivity to the rare decay $H → s\bar{s}$, demonstrating that FCC-ee has the potential to provide evidence of the strange-quark Yukawa coupling.

Measurements of the branching fractions of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( P 1 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events, we investigate four hadronic decay modes of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( 1 P 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η ( h = π or K ) via the process ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c at BESIII. The h c → π + π − π 0 decay is observed with a significance of 9.6 σ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. Evidences for h c → K + K − π 0 and h c → K + K − η are found with significances of 3.5 σ and 3.3 σ , respectively, after considering the systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions of these decays are measured to be B ( h c → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 1.36 ± 0.16 ± 0.14 ) × 10 − 3 , B ( h c → K + K − π 0 ) = ( 3.26 ± 0.84 ± 0.36 ) × 10 − 4 , and B ( h c → K + K − η ) = ( 3.13 ± 1.08 ± 0.38 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. No significant signal of h c → π + π − η is found, and the upper limit of its decay branching fraction is determined to be B ( h c → π + π − η ) < 4.0 × 10 − 4 at the 90% confidence level. Impact of Radiolysis on Iodine Speciation in a Variety of Matrices

This report details the work conducted in fiscal year 2023 with the aim of providing a better understanding of the speciation of iodine in support of domestic 99 Mo production Shine who uses a sulfate matrix in their process. Laboratory experiments to study the behavior of iodine speciation were conducted using spectroscopic methods including UV-vis and Raman as well as electrochemical studies. Radiolysis occurring in solution presents a unique challenge that is largely unaddressed with thermodynamic modeling, therefore a kinetic model was developed to address these issues. The focus of the studies conducted this year used surrogate radiolytic conditions induced by hydrogen peroxide for comparison to radiolytic conditions from direct gamma irradiation and neat acid solutions. For each case a model incorporating the kinetics was used to predict iodine speciation in the defined conditions where the output was directly compared to the experimental conditions. Further modeling was conducted incorporating the process conditions that are specific to Shine with incorporation of radiolysis and gas sparging.

Majorana-based quantum computing in nanowire devices

The boundary of one-dimensional topological superconductors might lead to the appearance of Majorana zero modes, whose nontrivial exchange statistics can be used for quantum computing. In branched nanowire networks, one can exchange Majorana modes by time dependently tuning topologically nontrivial parameter regions. In this paper, we simulate the exchange of four Majorana modes in T-shaped junctions made out of $\textit{p}$-wave superconducting Rashba wires. Specifically, we derive concrete experimental predictions for (quasi-)adiabatic braiding times and determine geometric conditions for successful Majorana exchange processes. Moreover, we prove that, in the adiabatic limit, the gating time needs to be smaller than the inverse of the squared superconducting order parameter and scales linearly with the gating potential. Furthermore, we show how to circumvent the formation of additional Majorana modes in branched nanowire systems, arising at wire intersection points of narrow junctions. Finally, we propose a multiqubit setup, allowing for universal quantum computing.

Disentangling Sources of Gene Tree Discordance in Phylogenomic Data Sets: Testing Ancient Hybridizations in Amaranthaceae s.l

Gene tree discordance in large genomic data sets can be caused by evolutionary processes such as incomplete lineage sorting and hybridization, as well as model violation, and errors in data processing, orthology inference, and gene tree estimation. Species tree methods that identify and accommodate all sources of conflict are not available, but a combination of multiple approaches can help tease apart alternative sources of conflict. Here, using a phylotranscriptomic analysis in combination with reference genomes, we test a hypothesis of ancient hybridization events within the plant family Amaranthaceae s.l. that was previously supported by morphological, ecological, and Sanger-based molecular data. The data set included seven genomes and 88 transcriptomes, 17 generated for this study. We examined gene-tree discordance using coalescent-based species trees and network inference, gene tree discordance analyses, site pattern tests of introgression, topology tests, synteny analyses, and simulations. We found that a combination of processes might have generated the high levels of gene tree discordance in the backbone of Amaranthaceae s.l. Furthermore, we found evidence that three consecutive short internal branches produce anomalous trees contributing to the discordance. Overall, our results suggest that Amaranthaceae s.l. might be a product of an ancient and rapid lineage diversification, and remains, and probably will remain, unresolved. This work highlights the potential problems of identifiability associated with the sources of gene tree discordance including, in particular, phylogenetic network methods. Our results also demonstrate the importance of thoroughly testing for multiple sources of conflict in phylogenomic analyses, especially in the context of ancient, rapid radiations. We provide several recommendations for exploring conflicting signals in such situations.

Direct constraint on the Higgs–charm coupling from a search for Higgs boson decays into charm quarks with the ATLAS detector

A search for the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of charm quarks is presented. The analysis uses proton–proton collisions to target the production of a Higgs boson in association with a leptonically decaying W or Z boson. The dataset delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Flavour-tagging algorithms are used to identify jets originating from the hadronisation of charm quarks. The analysis method is validated with the simultaneous measurement of WW, WZ and ZZ production, with observed (expected) significances of 2.6 (2.2) standard deviations above the background-only prediction for the $(W/Z)Z( → c\bar{c})$ process and 3.8 (4.6) standard deviations for the $(W/Z)W(→cq)$ process. The $(W/Z)Z( → c\bar{c})$ search yields an observed (expected) upper limit of 26 (31) times the predicted Standard Model cross-section times branching fraction for a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV, corresponding to an observed (expected) constraint on the charm Yukawa coupling modifier |$k_c$| < 8.5 (12.4), at the 95% confidence level. A combination with the ATLAS $(W/Z)H,H → b\bar{b}$ analysis is performed, allowing the ratio $k_c/k_b$ to be constrained to less than 4.5 at the 95% confidence level, smaller than the ratio of the b- and c-quark masses, and therefore determines the Higgs-charm coupling to be weaker than the Higgs-bottom coupling at the 95% confidence level.

Theoretical study of CH 3 Cl-N 2 line shapes in the ν 1 band. Line mixing effects in QR doublets and QQ k sub-branches

Line coupling and line mixing effects of CH 3 Cl lines in the ν 1 band perturbed by N 2 have been investigated. We have taken into account the non-diagonality of the exp(–S 2 ) operator within specified line spaces as well as the k-degeneracy of the transitions (due to the double degeneracy of the j,k levels with k ≠ 0). These transitions should be considered as doublets coupled by the line mixing process. A new problem appears in the calculation when the atom-atom potential model is introduced. In order to overcome this difficulty, a pragmatic approach is proposed. Comparisons of theoretically calculated matrix elements of W with measurements of QR(j,k) doublets as well as some QQ k sub-branches, which are strongly affected by line mixing, have been made. Finally, the results show that the formalism improved in this way leads to rather accurate predictions.

Dispersion-enhanced sequential batch sampling for adaptive contour estimation

In computer simulation and optimal design, sequential batch sampling offers an appealing way to iteratively stipulate optimal sampling points based upon existing selections and efficiently construct surrogate modeling. Nonetheless, the issue of near duplicates poses tremendous quandary for sequential learning. It refers to the situation that selected critical points cluster together in each sampling batch, which are individually but not collectively informative towards the optimal design. Near duplicates severely diminish the computational efficiency as they barely contribute extra information towards update of the surrogate. To address this issue, we impose a dispersion criterion on concurrent selection of sampling points, which essentially forces a sparse distribution of critical points in each batch, and demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in adaptive contour estimation. Specifically, we adopt Gaussian process surrogate to emulate the simulator, acquire variance reduction of the critical region from new sampling points as a dispersion criterion, and combine it with the modified expected improvement (EI) function for critical batch selection. The critical region here is the proximity of the contour of interest. This proposed approach is vindicated in numerical examples of a two-dimensional four-branch function, a four-dimensional function with a disjoint contour of interest and a time-delay dynamic system.

Microphase Separation of Randomly Linked Branched Polystyrene/Polylactic Acid for Formation of Cocontinuous Nanostructures

Cocontinuous polymeric nanomaterials have gained attention for their ability to preserve distinct properties of constituent microphases within a single material. Randomly linked copolymer networks have shown very wide stability windows for disordered cocontinuous phases (extending over ≈ 30 wt % in composition), but the reliance on a network architecture prevents subsequent solution- or melt-processing. Furthermore, the key factors contributing to cocontinuity have remained unclear. We recently found that randomly linked star copolymers (RSCs) can exhibit a cocontinuous window as wide as 25 wt % in the case of 4-arm stars, suggesting that while a network architecture is not essential for the formation of disordered cocontinuous phases, the presence of random elastic forces in such architectures may indeed facilitate their formation. In addition, the behavior was found to be highly sensitive to arm number, with 6-arm RSCs exhibiting almost no cocontinuous phase. These results raised a key mechanistic question regarding the contribution of random elastic forces, originating from strands that bridge between junctions, in stabilizing disordered cocontinuous phases. In the current study, we synthesized randomly linked branched copolymers (RBCs) of polystyrene (PS) and poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PLA), which represent an intermediate architecture between networks and stars. This approach allows for the introduction of elastic contributions from strands bridging between different junctions, while still maintaining the processability advantages of a non-network architecture. The cocontinuous regions of the PS/PLA RBCs, with varying polymer and linker functionalities (f p and f l , respectively), were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering, gravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. We found that the cocontinuous windows of RBCs typically expanded with increasing elastic contributions and exhibited reduced sensitivity to junction-functionality compared to RSCs. Notably, RBCs with f p = 1.50 and f l = 3, which had large molecular weights due to proximity to the gel point, achieved a cocontinuous window of ≈ 34 wt %, which is almost twice as wide as analogous 3-arm RSCs and comparable to randomly linked networks. Leveraging this robust cocontinuity and solution-processability, we fabricated a film of interconnected nanoporous PS.

Topographic Controls on the Distribution of Summer Monsoon Precipitation over South Asia

In this work, we use a high-resolution (9 km) one-way nested regional climate modeling framework to systematically evaluate individual and aggregate roles of various components of topography in the precipitation distribution during South Asian Summer Monsoon (SASM). While it is not the arrival but the north-northwestward extent of summer monsoon precipitation that is regulated by the presence of elevated surfaces in South Asia, both the thermal and mechanical topographic forcing play a role. Topography not only provides mechanical uplifting and prevents dry air entrainment, it also helps regulate the strength of upper level anticyclone and tropical easterly jet, all of which are necessary to sustain a conducive environment for monsoon precipitation in the South Asian summer. In turn, precipitation feedbacks positively by accelerating the tropospheric diabatic warming through atmospheric latent heating and by maintaining the moisture supply through local recycling. Modifications in the topography, particularly the removal of the Tibetan Plateau, substantially modulates the moist flow in the lower troposphere and the anticyclonic circulation in the upper troposphere to an extent that the northern branch of SASM becomes substantially weaker. These changes give way to negative precipitation anomalies and eventually to an environment where the cycle of feedbacks that runs the process of monsoon progression over land becomes inefficient. The design of topographic modification experiments can influence precipitation response; therefore, we advise caution in the interpretation of these and previously reported results.

Batch contact testing with variable Na AN-107 and AP-105

The Hanford Site stores an estimated 56 million gallons of mixed radioactive and chemically hazardous waste in large underground tanks. In support of the Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW) program for expediting Hanford tank waste supernate treatment, laboratory-scale ion exchange processing using prototypic unit operations was conducted on AW-105 tank waste at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Radiochemical Processing Laboratory. This report describes the batch contact testing for tanks AN-107 and AP-105 to help evaluate CST performance on tanks waste supernate after processing it in the ion exchange columns. Batch columns were performed with the wastes at six Na concentrations.

Uranium and Nickel Partitioning in a Contaminated Riparian Wetland

Uranium (U) and nickel (Ni) released 50 years ago have been immobilized in the Tims Branch wetlands located on the Savannah River Site in the United States. Sediments were collected from seven locations to identify the factors responsible for this attenuation. Ni and U contents in the solids were significantly correlated, suggesting that depositional as opposed to chemical processes contributed to their spatial distribution. Based on sequential extractions, 63 ± 16% of the U was partitioned into the organic fraction, whereas Ni was distributed between several sediment fractions. An inverse pH-organic matter (OM) correlation and positive correlations of OM with total U and organic-bound U/Ni suggest that increased OM preservation and binding to the mineral surfaces were likely responsible for Ni- and especially U-sediment retention (Tims Branch pH = 4.84 ± 0.68). EXAFS analysis indicated the predominance of U(VI) coordinated with clay minerals (~65%), together with ~35% coordinated to either OM (in areas with elevated OM levels) or iron oxides. The desorption-Kd coefficients of U (3972 ± 1370 L/kg) and Ni (30 ± 8 L/kg) indicate that dissolved Ni poses a greater long-term risk than dissolved U for migrating downstream. This study suggests that a delicate balance of geochemical properties controls whether wetlands behave as sinks or sources of contaminants.

Contrasting effects of glutamate and branched-chain amino acid metabolism on acid tolerance in a Castellaniella isolate from acidic groundwater

Groundwater acidification co-occurring with nitrate pollution is a common, global environmental health hazard. Denitrifying bacteria have been leveraged for the in situ removal of nitrate in groundwater. However, co-existing stressors—such as low pH—reduce the efficacy of biological removal processes. Castellaniella sp. str. MT123 is a complete denitrifier that was isolated from acidic, nitrate-contaminated groundwater. The strain grows robustly by nitrate respiration at pH < 6.0, completely reducing nitrate to dinitrogen gas. Genomic analyses of MT123 revealed few previously characterized acid tolerance genes. Thus, we utilized a combination of proteomics, metabolomics, and competitive mutant fitness to characterize the genetic mechanisms of MT123 acclimation to growth under mildly acidic conditions. We found that glutamate accumulation is critical in the acid acclimation of MT123, possibly through consumption of intracellular protons via glutamate decarboxylation to GABA. This is despite the fact that MT123 lacks the canonical glutamate decarboxylase-glutamate/GABA antiporter system implicated in acid tolerance in other bacteria. In contrast, branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) accumulation was detrimental to cell growth at lower pHs, possibly through indirect mechanisms impacting the cellular glutamate pool. Genetic analysis previously linked MT123 to a population of Castellaniella that bloomed—concurrent to nitrate removal—during a biostimulation effort to reduce groundwater nitrate concentrations at MT123’s location of origin. Thus, our analyses provide novel insight into mechanisms of acclimation to acidic conditions in a strain with significant potential for nitrate bioremediation.

Crystal dissolution by particle detachment

Crystal dissolution, which is a fundamental process in both natural and technological settings, has been predominately viewed as a process of ion-by-ion detachment into a surrounding solvent. Here we report a mechanism of dissolution by particle detachment (DPD) that dominates in mesocrystals formed via crystallization by particle attachment (CPA). Using liquid phase electron microscopy to directly observe dissolution of hematite crystals — both compact rhombohedra and mesocrystals of coaligned nanoparticles — we find that the mesocrystals evolve into branched structures, which disintegrate as individual sub-particles detach. The resulting dissolution rates far exceed those for equivalent masses of compact single crystals. Applying a numerical generalization of the Gibbs-Thomson effect, we show that the physical drivers of DPD are curvature and strain inherently tied to the original CPA process. Based on the generality of the model, we anticipate that DPD is widespread for both natural minerals and synthetic crystals formed via CPA.

Search for the decay of the Higgs boson to a $Z$ boson and a light pseudoscalar particle decaying to two photons

A search for the decay of the Higgs boson to a Z boson and a light, pseudoscalar particle, a, decaying respectively to two leptons and to two photons is reported. The search uses the full LHC Run 2 proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector. This is one of the first searches for this specific decay mode of the Higgs boson, and it probes unexplored parameter space in models with axion-like particles (ALPs) and extended scalar sectors. The mass of the $a$ particle is assumed to be in the range 0.1–33 GeV. The data are analysed in two categories: a merged category where the photons from the $a$ decay are reconstructed in the ATLAS calorimeter as a single cluster, and a resolved category in which two separate photons are detected. The main background processes are from Standard Model Z boson production in association with photons or jets. The data are in agreement with the background predictions, and upper limits on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson decay to $Za$ times the branching ratio $a → γγ$ are derived at the 95% confidence level and they range from 0.08% to 2% depending on the mass of the $a$ particle. The results are also interpreted in the context of ALP models.

Novel symmetry-preserving neural network model for phylogenetic inference

Abstract Motivation Scientists world-wide are putting together massive efforts to understand how the biodiversity that we see on Earth evolved from single-cell organisms at the origin of life and this diversification process is represented through the Tree of Life. Low sampling rates and high heterogeneity in the rate of evolution across sites and lineages produce a phenomenon denoted “long branch attraction” (LBA) in which long nonsister lineages are estimated to be sisters regardless of their true evolutionary relationship. LBA has been a pervasive problem in phylogenetic inference affecting different types of methodologies from distance-based to likelihood-based. Results Here, we present a novel neural network model that outperforms standard phylogenetic methods and other neural network implementations under LBA settings. Furthermore, unlike existing neural network models in phylogenetics, our model naturally accounts for the tree isomorphisms via permutation invariant functions which ultimately result in lower memory and allows the seamless extension to larger trees. Availability and implementation We implement our novel theory on an open-source publicly available GitHub repository: https://github.com/crsl4/nn-phylogenetics.
