An evaluation of the signature extension approach to large area crop inventories utilizing space image data

The author has identified the following significant results. Two examples of haze correction algorithms were tested: CROP-A and XSTAR. The CROP-A was tested in a unitemporal mode on data collected in 1973-74 over ten sample segments in Kansas. Because of the uniformly low level of haze present in these segments, no conclusion could be reached about CROP-A's ability to compensate for haze. It was noted, however, that in some cases CROP-A made serious errors which actually degraded classification performance. The haze correction algorithm XSTAR was tested in a multitemporal mode on 1975-76 LACIE sample segment data over 23 blind sites in Kansas and 18 sample segments in North Dakota, providing wide range of haze levels and other conditions for algorithm evaluation. It was found that this algorithm substantially improved signature extension classification accuracy when a sum-of-likelihoods classifier was used with an alien rejection threshold.

Thick section aluminum weldments for SRB structures

The Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) forward and aft skirts were designed with fracture control considerations used in the design data. Fracture control is based on reliance upon nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques to detect potentially critical flaws. In the aerospace industry, welds on aluminum in the thicknesses (0.500 to 1.375 in.) such as those encountered on the SRB skirts are normally welded from both sides to minimize distortion. This presents a problem with the potential presence of undefined areas of incomplete fusion and the inability to detect these potential flaws by NDE techniques. To eliminate the possibility of an undetectable defect, weld joint design was revised to eliminate blind root penetrations. Weld parameters and mechanical property data were developed to verify the adequacy of the new joint design.

Postural effects on the noninvasive baselines of ventricular performance

The effects of posture on time-based noninvasive measurements were determined utilizing the sequence supine-sitting-standing in a formal protocol in which observer biases were eliminated by blinding the measurement and calculation phases. Compared to the supine posture, the sitting and standing postures produced significant increases in heart rate, isovolumic contraction time, pre-ejection period and pre-ejection period/left-ventricular ejection time and significant decreases in ejection time and ejection time index. The response patterns are consistent with the hemodynamic correlates cited in the literature which show increased adrenergic activity and decreased venous return in the sitting and standing postures, the effect on venous return being dominant.

Crater morphometry from bistatic radar

In the present paper, bistatic radar techniques are discussed which can be used to identify and measure the dimensions of anomalously scattering regions on planetary surfaces. The morphometric potential of the bistatic radar is demonstrated by an example in which spectral features in Apollo 14 echoes are correlated with parts of the lunar crater Lansberg. Crater dimensions, including width of interior walls and extent of the ejecta blanket, are determined from a quantitative analysis. It is shown that the technique can be generalized for scattering areas at arbitrary positions with respect to the ground track, and could easily be inverted for characterization of a 'blind' target, such as Venus.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). LACIE third interim phase 3 accuracy assessment report

The author has identified the following significant results. An accuracy of 90/85 was achieved with the October estimates which had a relative bias of -9.9 percent and a coefficient of variation of 5.2 percent for the total wheat production in the USGP. The probability was 0.9 that the LACIE estimate was within + or - 15 percent of true wheat production for the USGP. The LACIE spring wheat production underestimates in August, September, and October were the results of area underestimates for spring wheat in the USNGP region. The winter wheat blind study showed that the average proportion estimates were significantly different from the average dot-count, ground truth proportions at the USSGP and USGP-7 levels.

Evaluation of Bayesian Sequential Proportion Estimation Using Analyst Labels

The author has identified the following significant results. A total of ten Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment Phase 3 blind sites and analyst-interpreter labels were used in a study to compare proportional estimates obtained by the Bayes sequential procedure with estimates obtained from simple random sampling and from Procedure 1. The analyst error rate using the Bayes technique was shown to be no greater than that for the simple random sampling. Also, the segment proportion estimates produced using this technique had smaller bias and mean squared errors than the estimates produced using either simple random sampling or Procedure 1.

Longitudinal variability of methane and ammonia bands on Jupiter

Results of a quantitative study of the longitudinal variations of methane and ammonia absorption on Jupiter are presented. A total of 78 high signal-to-noise ratio photoelectric spectra in the range 6000 to 6600 A were obtained on two consecutive nights, with complete longitudinal equatorial coverage each night through 9-min exposures covering a total of over 9 h. Analysis of the equivalent widths of the CH4 6190 A and NH3 6450 A absorption bands by means of a blind, automated, self-consistent method of continuum determination reveals large equivalent widths in both bands near longitudes of 35 and 340 deg and small equivalent widths near 150 deg, with a high degree of correlation between the equivalent widths of the bands. Continuum molecular absorption is found to be slightly negatively correlated with band equivalent widths. Radiative transfer calculations based on the model of Sato and Hansen (1979) using a doubling and adding technique indicate that the observed longitudinal variables of equivalent widths and continuum reflectivity are the results of longitudinal variations in ammonia cloud altitude.

Experimental motion sickness - Efficacy of transdermal scopolamine plus ephedrine

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study compared the efficacy of transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine administered alone and combined with ephedrine sulfate given orally in doses of 12.5, 25, and 50 mg. Eight normal male students were exposed to stressful accelerations in a slow-rotation room after receiving 10 apparently identical treatments comprising the four drugs and six placebos. Efficacy of the drug was defined in terms of the placebo range and categorized as beneficial, inconsequential, or detrimental. None of the effects was detrimental. Overall beneficial effects were 60% for transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine (plus placebo) and 57% for the three transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine plus ephedrine combinations.

Lyman-alpha fluorescence from hydrogen photofragments of CH4 and H2O

The process of H-Lyman-alpha fluorescence produced through photodissociation of CH4 and H2O provides an example for the usefulness of the detection of fluorescence of dissociation fragments as an aid in identifying some high lying Rydberg states. In the first experiment reported, an electron storage ring synchrotron radiation source was used. The fluorescence produced was detected with a solar blind photomultiplier and a Cs photocathode with a spectral sensitivity in the wavelength range from 1050 to 1950 A. In the second experiment considered, an intense atomic line source was employed.

Cross section for Ly-alpha emission by electron impact on methane

Utilizing Lyman-alpha emission cross sections for H2 as secondary standards, absolute values of Lyman-alpha emission cross sections for CH4 have been obtained for electron impact energies varying from threshold to 100 eV. A crossed electron beam-molecular beam geometry was employed and the Lyman-alpha radiation was detected at 90 deg and 45 deg with respect to the incident electron beam by a solar blind photomultiplier in tandem with an oxygen filter. The results are compared with previous measurements. Appreciable differences among the various experimental data are found.

Technical writing in America: A historical perspective

The standard distinction between poetic and referential language, the gulf between science and the humanities, and the distress many teachers of English feel when faced for the first time with the prospect of teaching technical writing are discussed. In the introduction of many technical writing textbooks. Technical communication is divorced from other forms of linguistic experience by making language limiting and reductive rather than creative and expansive. The emphasis on technical/scientific writing as radically different had blinded people to those traits it has in common with all species of composition and has led to a neglect of research, on fundamental rhetorical issues. A complete rhetorical theory of technical discourse should include information about the attitudes and motives of writers, the situations which motivate (or coerce) them to write, definitive features of technical style and form, interrelationship of expression and creativity, and functions of communication in shaping and preserving scientific networds and institutions. The previous areas should be explored with respect to contemporary practice and within an historical perspective.

Transition year labeling error characterization study

Labeling errors made in the large area crop inventory experiment transition year estimates by Earth Observation Division image analysts are identified and quantified. The analysis was made from a subset of blind sites in six U.S. Great Plains states (Oklahoma, Kansas, Montana, Minnesota, North and South Dakota). The image interpretation basically was well done, resulting in a total omission error rate of 24 percent and a commission error rate of 4 percent. The largest amount of error was caused by factors beyond the control of the analysts who were following the interpretation procedures. The odd signatures, the largest error cause group, occurred mostly in areas of moisture abnormality. Multicrop labeling was tabulated showing the distribution of labeling for all crops.

Longitudinal variability of methane and ammonia bands on Saturn

A total of 129 spectra of the center of the disk of Saturn were obtained in March 1980 in order to search for possible longitudinal variations in the CH4 6190 and NH3 6450 bands. The spectra were reduced to reflectivities, and the band equivalent widths were measured using a blind, automated continuum fitting technique. The methane and ammonia equivalent widths are well correlated with each other. There are some latitude regions in which both bands show enhanced absorption and some latitudes in which both bands are weaker than the average. The continuum reflectivity is quite constant with latitude and shows no apparent correlation with molecular band equivalent width. The observed variations may be explained by a longitudinal variation in the altitude of the top of the thick cloud of about + or - 2 km from the mean.

Antimotion-sickness efficacy of scopolamine 12 and 72 hours after transdermal administration

The antimotion sickness remedy, transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine, administered in this experiment was scheduled to deliver 1.0 mg of scopolamine over a period of 3 d, and this paper compares its efficacy 12 and 72 h after administration. In a double-blind study, six male college students were individually exposed to a standardized provocative test in a slow rotation room after six apparently identical treatments comprising four placebos and two medications. Efficacy was categorized as beneficial, inconsequential, or detrimental. None of the responses was detrimental. Following the first administration of the therapeutic system, there were four beneficial responses after 12 h but none was beneficial after 72 h. Following the second treatment regimen, there were four beneficial responses after 12 h and three beneficial responses after 72 h. Great individual differences were demonstrated, two subjects accounting for six beneficial responses and two accounting for only one beneficial response. The difference in efficacy after 12 and 72 h has practical and theoretical significance.
