Optimum Cyclic Redundancy Codes for Noisier Channels

Binary cyclic redundancy codes for feedback communication over noisy digital links are considered. The standard 16 bit American Data and Computer Communication Protocol (ADCCP) polynomial is designed for digital links which already have a low input bit error probability. For file transfer between personal computers over telephone circuits, the quality of resulting digital circuit may be much lower. The 3 byte (24 bit) and 4 byte (32 bit) polynomials are considered. Generator polynomials of a certain class have minimum weight and yet achieve the bound on minimum distance for arbitrary codes. Particular choices for 24 bit and 32 bit redundancies are exhibited: of weight and distance 6 in the 24-bit case; and weight 10 and distance 8 in the 32-bit case.

Analysis of a Coded, M-ary Orthogonal Input Optical Channel with Random-gain Photomultiplier Detection

Performance of two coding systems is analyzed for a noisy optical channel with M(=2(L)-ary orthogonal signaling and random gain photomultiplier detection. The considered coding systems are the Reed Solomon (RS) coding with error only correction decoding and the interleaved binary convolutional system with soft decision Viterbi decoding. The required average number of received signal photons per information bit, N sub b, for a desired bit error of 0.000001 is found for a set of commonly used parameters and with a high background noise level. We find that the interleaved binary convolutional coding system is preferable to the RS coding system in performance complexity tradeoffs.

A cascaded coding scheme for error control

A cascaded coding scheme for error control was investigated. The scheme employs a combination of hard and soft decisions in decoding. Error performance is analyzed. If the inner and outer codes are chosen properly, extremely high reliability can be attained even for a high channel bit-error-rate. Some example schemes are studied which seem to be quite suitable for satellite down-link error control.

Canonical Signed Digit Study: FIR Digital Filter Simulation Results - Part 2

Finite Impulse Response digital filter using Canonical Signed-Digit (CSD) number representation for the coefficients has been studied and its computer simulation results are presented here. Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) criterion is employed to optimize filter coefficients into the corresponding CSD numbers. To further improve coefficients optimization process, an extra non-zero bit is added for any filter coefficients exceeding 1/2. This technique improves frequency response of filter without increasing filter complexity almost at all. The simulation results show outstanding performance in bit-error-rate (BER) curve for all CSD implemented digital filters included in this presentation material.

Communications and information research: Improved space link performance via concatenated forward error correction coding

With the development of new advanced instruments for remote sensing applications, sensor data will be generated at a rate that not only requires increased onboard processing and storage capability, but imposes demands on the space to ground communication link and ground data management-communication system. Data compression and error control codes provide viable means to alleviate these demands. Two types of data compression have been studied by many researchers in the area of information theory: a lossless technique that guarantees full reconstruction of the data, and a lossy technique which generally gives higher data compaction ratio but incurs some distortion in the reconstructed data. To satisfy the many science disciplines which NASA supports, lossless data compression becomes a primary focus for the technology development. While transmitting the data obtained by any lossless data compression, it is very important to use some error-control code. For a long time, convolutional codes have been widely used in satellite telecommunications. To more efficiently transform the data obtained by the Rice algorithm, it is required to meet the a posteriori probability (APP) for each decoded bit. A relevant algorithm for this purpose has been proposed which minimizes the bit error probability in the decoding linear block and convolutional codes and meets the APP for each decoded bit. However, recent results on iterative decoding of 'Turbo codes', turn conventional wisdom on its head and suggest fundamentally new techniques. During the past several months of this research, the following approaches have been developed: (1) a new lossless data compression algorithm, which is much better than the extended Rice algorithm for various types of sensor data, (2) a new approach to determine the generalized Hamming weights of the algebraic-geometric codes defined by a large class of curves in high-dimensional spaces, (3) some efficient improved geometric Goppa codes for disk memory systems and high-speed mass memory systems, and (4) a tree based approach for data compression using dynamic programming.

Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

The performance anlaysis of NASA's telecommand systems was summarized. It is assumed that the decoded frames are scrambled prior to decoding by the outer code. The average decoded bit error rate are examined which allows the possibility of evaluating many different frame coding options. The capacity and cutoff rate of the outer channel formed by the combination of the actual physical channel and the inner encoder and decoder in a concatenated coding system were analyzed. The best combination of inner and outer codes to use in a concatenated coding system were determined. It was established that in general: (1) it is better not to interleave between the inner and outer codes; and (2) for a fixed overall code rate, it is better to use higher rate inner codes and lower rate outer codes. Inner convolutional codes are considered. The analysis is more difficult in this case because the inner decoder error events do not appear in blocks of fixed length but can be of many different lengths.

Error and erasure probabilities for Galileo uplink code

The Galileo uplink Frame Erasure probability and Undetected Frame Error probability are derived. The performance meets desired specification under normal operations. The Galileo command system will work well even in an emergency condition, where the bit error rate into the command decoder is 1.00 X 0.001 (although Galileo's command threshold error rate is 1.00 X 0.00001).

Performance Analysis of Direct-Sequence Code-Division Multiple-Access Communications with Asymmetric Quadrature Phase-Shift-Keying Modulation

This article considers a quaternary direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) communication system with asymmetric quadrature phase-shift-keying (AQPSK) modulation for unequal error protection (UEP) capability. Both time synchronous and asynchronous cases are investigated. An expression for the probability distribution of the multiple-access interference is derived. The exact bit-error performance and the approximate performance using a Gaussian approximation and random signature sequences are evaluated by extending the techniques used for uniform quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) and binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) DS-CDMA systems. Finally, a general system model with unequal user power and the near-far problem is considered and analyzed. The results show that, for a system with UEP capability, the less protected data bits are more sensitive to the near-far effect that occurs in a multiple-access environment than are the more protected bits.

Performance of the unique-word-reverse-modulation type demodulator for mobile satellite communications

This paper proposes a new type of coherent demodulator, the unique-word (UW)-reverse-modulation type demodulator, for burst signal controlled by voice operated transmitter (VOX) in mobile satellite communication channels. The demodulator has three individual circuits: a pre-detection signal combiner, a pre-detection UW detector, and a UW-reverse-modulation type demodulator. The pre-detection signal combiner combines signal sequences received by two antennas and improves bit energy-to-noise power density ratio (E(sub b)/N(sub 0)) 2.5 dB to yield 10(exp -3) average bit error rate (BER) when carrier power-to-multipath power ratio (CMR) is 15 dB. The pre-detection UW detector improves UW detection probability when the frequency offset is large. The UW-reverse-modulation type demodulator realizes a maximum pull-in frequency of 3.9 kHz, the pull-in time is 2.4 seconds and frequency error is less than 20 Hz. The performances of this demodulator are confirmed through computer simulations and its effect is clarified in real-time experiments at a bit rate of 16.8 kbps using a digital signal processor (DSP).

High Precision Ranging and Range-Rate Measurements over Free-Space-Laser Communication Link

We present a high-precision ranging and range-rate measurement system via an optical-ranging or combined ranging-communication link. A complete bench-top optical communication system was built. It included a ground terminal and a space terminal. Ranging and range rate tests were conducted in two configurations. In the communication configuration with 622 data rate, we achieved a two-way range-rate error of 2 microns/s, or a modified Allan deviation of 9 x 10 (exp -15) with 10 second averaging time. Ranging and range-rate as a function of Bit Error Rate of the communication link is reported. They are not sensitive to the link error rate. In the single-frequency amplitude modulation mode, we report a two-way range rate error of 0.8 microns/s, or a modified Allan deviation of 2.6 x 10 (exp -15) with 10 second averaging time. We identified the major noise sources in the current system as the transmitter modulation injected noise and receiver electronics generated noise. A new improved system will be constructed to further improve the system performance for both operating modes.

Time synchronization of a frequency-hopped MFSK communication system

In a frequency-hopped (FH) multiple-frequency-shift-keyed (MFSK) communication system, frequency hopping causes the necessary frequency transitions for time synchronization estimation rather than the data sequence as in the conventional (nonfrequency-hopped) system. Making use of this observation, this paper presents a fine synchronization (i.e., time errors of less than a hop duration) technique for estimation of FH timing. The performance degradation due to imperfect FH time synchronization is found in terms of the effect on bit error probability as a function of full-band or partial-band noise jamming levels and of the number of hops used in the FH timing estimate.

Performance measurements of a diode laser optical communications link with Q = 4 PPM signaling

The theoretical and measured performance characteristics of a direct detection optical communication system are reported. The system consisted of a semiconductor diode laser, silicon avalanche photodiode detector, and used Q = 4 optical pulse position modulation signaling to transmit binary source data at a rate of 25 megabits/sec. Operation at a receiver bit error probability of 10 to the -6th was demonstrated at received signal energies corresponding to an average of 160 detected photons per PPM symbol, or 80 photons per source bit.

Performance measurement results for a 220 Mbps QPPM optical communication receiver with an EG/G Slik APD

The performance of a 220 Mbps quaternary pulse position modulation (QPPM) optical communication receiver with a 'Slik' silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) and a wideband transimpedance preamplifier in a small hybrid circuit module was measured. The receiver performance had been poor due to the lack of a wideband and low noise transimpedance preamplifier. With the new APB preamplifier module, the receiver achieved a bit error rate (BER) of 10 exp -6 at an average received input optical signal power of 4.2 nW, which corresponds to an average of 80 received (incident) signal photons per information bit.

Pseudorandom noise for telemetry error rate measurement applications and limitations.

A pseudorandom noise (PRN) generator functional design has been developed which is superior to the commercially available instrument in usable bandwidth and in the closeness of fit to the gaussian probability distribution in the 'tails' of the curve. The principal disadvantage of PRN sources for bit error rate (BER) measurements is that the probability distribution is truncated in the tails. This truncation of the probability distribution results in a similar truncation of the BER curve - i.e., there is a minimum BER which can be measured, below which the only possible result is zero. The minimum nonzero BER actually computed with the PRN source developed was 0.00001 with a pseudorandom sequence of 131,071 bits. It is theoretically possible, with a longer sequence, to achieve a minimum BER of 0.000001 with the same design.

CMOS RAM cosmic-ray-induced-error-rate analysis

A significant number of spacecraft operational anomalies are believed to be associated with cosmic-ray-induced soft errors in the LSI memories. Test programs using a cyclotron to simulate cosmic rays have established conclusively that many common commercial memory types are vulnerable to heavy-ion upset. A description is given of the methodology and the results of a detailed analysis for predicting the bit-error rate in an assumed space environment for CMOS memory devices. Results are presented for three types of commercially available CMOS 1,024-bit RAMs. It was found that the HM6508 is susceptible to single-ion induced latchup from argon and krypton ions. The HS6508 and HS6508RH and the CDP1821 apparently are not susceptible to single-ion induced latchup.

A cascaded error control coding scheme for space and satellite communication

An error control coding scheme for space and satellite communications is presented. The scheme is attained by cascading two codes, the inner and outer codes. Error performance of the scheme is analyzed. It is shown that, if the inner and outer codes are chosen properly, extremely high reliability can be achieved even for a high channel bit-error-rate. Several exmple schemes are studied. One of the example schemes is proposed to NASA for satellite or spacecraft downlink error control.
