Landfill based microgrids powered by renewable energy aid reliability and resiliency while promoting environmental and energy justice. This paper aims to design a flexible boundary algorithm for a proposed Chattanooga landfill microgrid with the ability to shrink or expand its boundaries based on the available power from the solar PV and battery storage. This helps to improve resiliency unlike the conventional fixed boundary microgrids. The flexible boundary algorithm determines the combination and switching status of the intellirupter ® which changes the microgrid boundaries to achieve power balance by dropping or energizing specific load sections. Finally, the microgrid with flexible boundary was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and performed satisfactorily when tested under various scenarios.
Power system restoration is an important part of system planning. Power utilities are required to maintain black start capable generators that can energize the transmission system and provide cranking power to non-blackstart capable generators. Traditionally, hydro and diesel units are used as black start capable generators. With the increased penetration of bulk size solar farms, inverter based generation can play an important role in faster and parallel black start thus ensuring system can be brought back into service without the conventional delays that can be expected with limited black start generators. Inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) power plants have advantages that are suitable for black start. This paper proposes the modeling, control, and simulation of a grid-forming inverter-based PV-battery power plant that can be used as a black start unit. The inverter control includes both primary and secondary control loops to imitate the control of a conventional synchronous machine. The proposed approach is verified using a test system modified from the IEEE 9-bus system in the time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation tool PSCAD. The simulation results shows voltage and frequency stability during a multi-step black-start and network energization process.
Roadway grade is one of the major variables that affects a vehicle’s energy consumption. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of an eco look-ahead control for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The proposed eco look-ahead controller was developed for the lead vehicle of a platoon of BEVs. The eco look-ahead control predicts the optimum speed and acceleration levels within a preset speed window to minimize energy consumption considering the instantaneous energy used and the regenerated energy. The developed BEV eco look-ahead control system integrates a BEV energy consumption model and a powertrain model to save fuel while maintaining vehicle speed within a user-specified window. In addition, the study demonstrates the effects of roadway grade on BEV energy consumption. The results show that the energy consumption of BEVs are significantly reduced on downhill roads compared with internal combustion engine vehicles owing to regenerative braking. Specifically, testing showed that BEVs could even produce extra energy on downhill roads. The study also tested the eco look-ahead control on an 18-km section of I-81 and found that the system produced savings of 8.51% and 26.88% in the uphill and downhill directions, respectively. This study demonstrated that regenerative energy in BEVs is a critical factor in energy efficiency and the developed eco look-ahead control significantly improved the energy efficiency for BEVs.

A battery system utilizes a plurality of transformers interconnected with the battery cells. The transformers each have at least one transformer core operable for magnetization in at least a first magnetic state with a magnetic flux in a first direction and a second magnetic state with a magnetic flux in a second direction. The transformer cores retain the first magnetic state and the second magnetic state without current flow through said plurality of transformers. Circuitry is utilized for switching a selected transformer core between the first and second magnetic states to sense voltage and/or balance particular cells or particular banks of cells.
Batteries, component structures and manufacturing methods, in particular including a glassy embedded battery electrode assembly having a composite material structure composed of interpenetrating material components including a porous electroactive network including a solid electroactive material, and a continuous glassy medium including a Li ion conducting sulfide glass, can achieve enhanced power output, reduced charging time and/or improved cycle life.
Lithium-metal batteries with zero excess lithium on the anode side paired with a fully lithiated cathode are regarded as a form of the highest energy-density configuration. Unfortunately, the continuous lithium loss over cycling from a limited amount of lithium reservoir significantly degrades the overall cell performance in the anode-free system. To mitigate the deterioration, modifying the current collector for enhanced lithium cycling is an indispensable route. Here, we apply a Ag/Cu ion exchange to precipitate micro-sized Ag particles on the Cu current collector to enhance the lithium reversibility via (de)alloying process. Further, we show a smoother morphology of lithium upon alloying, which leads to a lowered nucleation potential as well as increased average Coulombic efficiency in Li||Cu cells regardless of electrolyte formulation. The preferred lithium adsorption on Ag and AgLi over Cu is demonstrated with density functional theory calculations, which supports that Li is forming a gamma-phase alloy in the last stage rather than being deposited beneath the alloy. Lastly, this simple Cu foil modification enhances lithium reversibility and reduces its nucleation barrier, thus mitigating the capacity fade of a Cu||LiFePO 4 with reduced polarization.

A rational compositional design of high-nickel, cobalt-free layered oxide materials for high-energy and low-cost lithium-ion batteries would be expected to further propel the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), yet a composition with satisfactory electrochemical properties has yet to emerge. The previous work has demonstrated a promising LiNi 0.883 Mn 0.056 Al 0.061 O 2 (NMA-89) composition that outperformed high-nickel, cobalt-containing analogs in cycling stability and maintained a comparable rate performance and thermal stability. Herein, the capacity fading mechanism of NMA-89 in a pouch full cell with a 4.2 V cutoff is compared to that of its cobalt-containing analogs. The results reveal that particle cracking in LiNi 0.89 Mn 0.055 Co 0.055 O 2 (NMC-89) and LiNi 0.883 Co 0.053 Al 0.064 O 2 (NCA-89) leads to a loss of active material and an increase in surface area, thereby exacerbating structural and surface instabilities, accelerating impedance and polarization growth, and ultimately reducing their capacity retentions. LiNi 0.89 Mn 0.044 Co 0.042 Al 0.013 Mg 0.011 O 2 (NMCAM-89) and NMA-89 experience subdued surface reactions and maintain spherical particle structures, both of which are conducive to their capacity retentions during long-term cycling. Furthermore, this investigation offers insights into how specific transition-metal ions dictate the electrochemical stability of high-Ni layered oxide cathode materials, highlights the benefit of Mn-Al combination in NMA-89, and presents potential strategies to further enhance the performance of this novel class of cathode materials.
Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) take a very important role for energy storage. LIBs are dominant in consumer electronics, and they have also entered the market of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in HEVs, and pure EVs. However, state-of-the-art LIBs are electrochemically intercalation-based and are still limited in energy density and power rates. To address these challenges and others (e. g. safety issues and cost), conversion-based copper sulfides (Cu x S, 1≤x≤2) have been investigated as alternative cathodes for improved electrochemical performance, that is, higher energy density, better cycling stability, and enhanced rate capability. In this paper, we summarize the recent research progress on Cu x S to gain a better understanding of the material's electrochemical mechanisms and develop feasible strategies for improving its performance.
