Electrocatalytic grafting of polyvinyl chloride plastics

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics require high loadings of plasticizers and stabilizers to achieve commercially useful bulk properties. However, these non-covalent additives leach from PVC over time, resulting in the loss of their tailored functionality. This work details the electrocatalytic functionalization of PVC to covalently graft plasticizing additives directly onto the polymer backbone. Here, mechanistic insights guided the design of electrocatalysts capable of modifying C–Cl bonds of PVC under mild conditions with high selectivity while suppressing side reactions such as elimination and chain scission. Functional groups that mimic PVC plasticizers are covalently installed into the backbone of PVC to create new materials with distinct bulk properties from the original polymer. The degree of polymer grafting is easily controlled by simply changing the redox capacity that is passed during electrolysis. This strategy is employed to create chemically- and leach-resistant PVC materials by directly electrolyzing mixtures of consumer PVC products

Characterization of two types of polysaccharides from Eremurus hissaricus roots growing in Tajikistan

Eremurus Hissaricus (E.hissaricus) is a native plant of Tajikistan that has been used in traditional medicine and whose raw components have been identified as having potential for the domestic economy. We have found that carbohydrates comprise 80–85% of the root biomass, from which we have characterized two types of polysaccharides: A water-soluble polysaccharide (WSP) and an acid-soluble polysaccharide (ASP), with 23% and 8% yields, respectively. The results from FTIR, HPAEC-PAD, HPSEC, methylation linkage analysis and NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H, 13 C, zTOCSY, HSQC, HSQCTOXY and HMBC) demonstrated that WSP has a backbone of (1 → 4)-linked β-d-mannopyranosyl and β-d-glucopyranosyl residues in a 1.5:1 M ratio, having acetylated groups, with weight-average molecular weights of 495 kDa. Analyses of ASP indicate that it is comprised of d-galactose, d-mannose, and d-glucose in a molar ratio of 1.8: 1.6: 1.0, which is consistent with a branched galactoglucomannan polysaccharide with (1 → 4)-linked β-pyranose configurations, and weight-average molecular weight of 179 kDa. The FTIR absorption bands in the region of 875–890 cm 1 and NMR spectroscopy data confirm the presence of β-pyranose configuration of main polysaccharide backbone in the both ASP and WSP samples. These polysaccharides are an available raw material with the potential for use in a number of industrial applications.

Physical structure of constitutional isomers influences antiproliferation activity of thiosemicarbazone-alkylthiocarbamate copper complexes

A series of hybrid thiosemicarbazone-alkylthiocarbamate copper complexes with similar electronic environments but distinct physical structures have been prepared, characterized, and evaluated for antiproliferation activity. The complexes include the constitutional isomers (1-phenylpropane-1-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato)-2-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato))copper(II) (CuL 1 ) and (1-phenylpropane-1-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato)-2-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato))copper(II) (CuL 2 ) along with (1-propane-1-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato)-2-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato))copper(II) (CuL 3 ). Complexes CuL 1 and CuL 2 differ in the positions of the pendent thiosemicarbazone (TSC) and alkylthiocarbamate (ATC) moieties on the 1-phenylpropane backbone. Complex CuL 3 employs a propane backbone with the TSC in the 2-position as in CuL 1 . The isomer pair CuL 1 and CuL 2 have equivalent electronic environments with indistinguishable Cu II/I potentials (E 1/2 = -0.86 V vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra (g ∥ = 2.26, g ⊥ = 2.08). The electronic structure of CuL 3 has a similar E 1/2 of -0.84 V and identical EPR parameters to CuL 1, 2 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm a consistent donor environment with no substantial variation in the Cusingle bondN or Cusingle bondS bond distances and angles between the complexes. The antiproliferation activities of the CuL 1–3 were evaluated against the lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549) and nonmalignant lung fibroblast cell line (IMR-90) using the MTT assay. CuL 1 had the highest A549 activity ( A549 EC 50 = 0.065 μM) and selectivity ( IMR-90 EC 50 / A549 EC 50 = 20). The constitutional isomer CuL 2 displayed decreased A549 activity (0.18 μM) and selectivity (10.6). The complex CuL 3 displayed activity (0.009 μM) similar to CuL 1 but with a lack of selectivity (1.0). Cellular copper loading determined by ICP-MS was consistent with the activity and selectivity trends. The complexes CuL 1–3 did not induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation.

Durable and Highly Selective Ion Transport of a Sulfonated Diels Alder Poly(phenylene) for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

In order to improve the durability and ion selectivity of a hydrocarbon membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) a polymer was rationally designed with an external hydrophobic shell and internal hydrophilic core. The polymer was designed to prevent hydrophilic polymer chain aggregation by functionalizing the external polymer shell with hydrophobic side chains and attaching acid moieties onto the polymer backbone. The hydrophobic shell is the result of pentafluorobenzoyl group functionalization on the pendent aryl rings in a Diels Alder poly(phenylene) backbone. The internal polymer chain contains sulfonic acid moieties to impart hydrophilic character. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of the membrane were systematically studied and compared with widely used Nafion-212. The synthesized membranes were found to be superior to Nafion-212 not only in terms of lower vanadium ion permeability (4.25 x 10 -8 vs. Nafion-212: 6.0 x 10 -6 cm 2 min -1 ) but also in higher VRFB performance (EE = 89% and vs. Nafion-212: 85.5% at 40 mA/cm 2 ). The membrane also showed over three times higher capacity retention than Nafion-212 (0.075 % vs. 0.25 % capacity loss per cycle respectively) and excellent ex situ and in situ chemical stability.

Role of side-chain length on gas transport of CO 2 /CH 4 mixtures in polymers with side-chain porosity

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are traditionally formed from ladder backbones, but recent synthetic advances have allowed for the formation of non-traditional PIMs using a poly(ladder) motif, whereby rigid PIM-like sidechains are appended onto more flexible backbones. The effect of side-chain length on free volume and gas transport properties was recently evaluated for a methoxy-functionalized poly(ladder) (OMe-ROMP). In this study, we elaborate on the role of side-chain length and its influence on mixed-gas performance and plasticization stability for OMe-ROMP. Pure-gas sorption results are also reported, including hysteresis effects from CO 2 conditioning. Taken together, this study reveals the role of side-chain length on gas sorption, diffusion, and plasticization for CO 2 /CH 4 separations. Finally, we conclude that the length of a rigid side chain in the poly(ladder) motif is a valuable structural parameter to control sorption, diffusion, and stability towards plasticization for gas separation membrane materials.

On electron beam-induced degradation of vinyl ester thermosets

We have demonstrated that electron beam radiolysis induces scissions of the C-O-C bonds along the backbone of the chains of unsaturated polyester thermosets of different compositions based on dicyclopentadiene, isophthalic acid, epoxy vinyl ester, and terephthalic acid. The radiolysis is imminent irrespective of the degree of crosslinking in the thermosets both in neat resins and in the presence of solvents. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) results show the formation of the alkoxyl radicals and C-centered radicals as the primary intermediate products of the C-O-C scissions. While the alkoxyl radicals of these resins exhibit very good stability even six months after the irradiation, the C-centered radicals decay very rapidly via their reactions with oxygen that is available either as adsorbed in the resins, dissolved in solvents or from the environment. The radiolytically produced •OH radicals in the unsaturated-ester aqueous solutions play a major role in inducing scissions on the backbone of the polymer chains. The solvated electrons (e s ) from organic solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropyl alcohol, also induce direct scission of the C-O-C bonds, giving rise to the formation of alkoxyl radicals and C-centered radicals. However, a considerable fraction of es is scavenged by the dissolved O 2 to produce O 2 - . Despite the radiation-induced scissions, irradiation of the resins at a dose level of 1000 kGy results in an increase of the glass transition temperature, Tg. This is due to the simultaneous radiation-induced polymerization of the vinyl monomers, toluene, and styrene that are present in the resins. The increase in Tg is observed in all the resins except for the terephthalic polyester resin in aqueous solution, in which the absence of these monomers results in Tg decreasing sharply with irradiation. This work demonstrates that ionizing radiation triggers continuous free radical-chain reactions that lead to the formation of recyclable oligomers.

Chain rigidity controlled aggregation ability and solid-state microstructures for efficient stretchable conjugated polymer films

Stretchable conjugated polymer films with good electrical performance under mechanical deformation are highly desirable for soft electronics. However, the mechanical and electrical properties of these films, particularly in conjugated polymer:elastomer blends, are not fully understood at molecular level. Here, this study explores the relationships among molecular structure, aggregation ability, film microstructure, and the electrical/mechanical properties of three diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers (P1, P2, P3) with decreasing backbone rigidity and their corresponding polymer:elastomer blends. The most flexible polymer P3 shows strong aggregation, which forms highly crystalline fibers to produce fragile neat film and produces large isolated crystallites restricting charge transport in blend film. As chain rigidity increases, the P1 and P2 polymers show weaker aggregation, and produce smaller crystallites in neat films with enhanced ductility. P1 and P2 based blend films display nanocrystallites polymer networks with dispersed elastomer domains. As a result, we achieved near-constant charge mobility before and after stretching under 50 % strain for P2-based blend films with well-controlled pathways for both charge transport and energy dissipation. This study demonstrates the critical role of backbone rigidity in regulating the properties of stretchable conjugated polymer films, paving the way for more reliable and deformable materials in soft electronics.

Capacity contributions of Southern Oregon offshore wind to the Pacific Northwest and California

Variable renewable energy generation poses unique capacity challenges, which increasingly depend on weather events at varying timescales. Facilitated by transmission planning, geographic and technological diversity of the generation fleet may provide a mitigation to capacity shortfalls. In this work, offshore wind (OSW) energy is sited in the areas off the West Coast between Coos Bay, Oregon, and Crescent City, California. Three generation and transmission scenarios are modeled within the Western Interconnection: (i) 3.4 gigawatts (GW) of installed OSW capacity connected to Southern Oregon through a High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) Radial Topology in 2030; (ii) 12.9 GW of installed OSW capacity connected to Washington, Oregon, and California through a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Radial Topology post-2030, and (iii) the same 12.9 GW connected to the same locations through a Multi-terminal DC (MTDC) Backbone Topology post-2030. Zonal dispatch simulations assuming coincident wind, solar, and hydropower production and loads over 18 meteorological years, accounting for temperature-dependent equipment derating and forced outages, serve as inputs to the Associated System Capacity Contribution (ASCC) methodology. The capacity credit is 33%, 25% and 34% for the 2030 HVAC Radial Topology, 2030+ HVDC Radial Topology, and 2030+ MTDC Backbone Topology, respectively. Transmission design is shown to mitigate the typical erosion of marginal capacity contribution as more OSW is developed, underscoring the opportunity for grid modernization while decarbonizing the generation mix.

Exploration of Tertiary Structure in Sequence-Defined Polymers Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Peptoids are a class of sequence-defined biomimetic polymers with peptide-like backbones and side chains located on backbone nitrogens rather than alpha carbons. These materials demonstrate a strong ability for precise control of single-chain structure, multiunit self-assembly, and macromolecular assembly through careful tuning of sequence due to the diversity of available side chains, although the driving forces behind these assemblies are often not understood. Prior experimental work has shown that linked 15mer peptoids can mimic the protein helical hairpin structure by leveraging the chirality-inducing nature of bulky side chains and hydrophobicity, but there are still gaps in our understanding of the relationship between sequence, stability, and particular secondary or tertiary structure. Here, we present a molecular dynamics (MD) study on the folding behavior of these polymers into hairpins, discussing the differences in structure from sequences with various characteristics in water and acetonitrile, and then compare the handedness preference of common helical motifs between solvents.

Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Copolymers Containing Transition-Metal Complex: Intrachain Magnetic Exchange Interactions and Magneto-Optical Activity

A donor-acceptor conjugated copolymer containing thienothiophene (TT) (Donor) units and Co(II) complexes (Acceptor) has been synthesized and characterized. The studies of magnetic properties of the polymers by SQUID and EPR measurements showed antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between neighboring spin centers along with the polymer backbone through intrachain in-teractions. It is the first time that D-A conjugated polymer backbone serving as bridging ligands for magnetic couplings, making this type of polymers promising as magnetic materials. Moreover, the magneto-optical activity (MOA) of polymer LCP1 was char-acterized using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. It was found that the material exhibits a large magneto-optic rotation with a peak Verdet constant of 2980 deg*T -1 *m -1 at 590 nm.

Preprocessing Affords 3D Crystalline Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Structure

The aggregation and crystallization of poly(3-hexylthiophene- 2,5-diyl) (P3HT), a representative active layer material used for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) applications, are influenced by the solution pretreatment and deposition process. This study explores vibration-assisted convective deposition for the fabrication of OFETs in comparison to spin coating, blade coating, and convective deposition without vibration. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopic analysis demonstrates that convective deposition, especially assisted with vibration, leads to a greater degree of intrachain interactions, longer conjugation length, and enhanced polymer backbone planarization. When the P3HT solution is preprocessed via sonication and aging, the P3HT films exhibit J-like aggregation, and (h11) peaks can be observed through grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, suggesting an ordered 3D crystalline structure. OFETs based on such films exhibit high mobilities (up to 0.14 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ). The results point to the sensitivity of P3HT charge transport behavior to the intramolecular interactions and backbone planarity and further deepen our understanding of the relationship between processing, aggregates, molecular ordering, and resultant device properties.

Data-Driven Discovery of Linear Molecular Probes with Optimal Selective Affinity for PFAS in Water

Approaches to tackle the wide and growing variety of highly persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of pressing global need because of their detrimental human health effects, such as cancer, birth defects, and hormone imbalance. Sensitive, selective, and easy-to-use real-time sensors to monitor and detect PFAS and sorbents to extract them are critical to meeting government-mandated environmental concentrations. In this work, we combine all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, enhanced sampling, deep representational learning, and Bayesian optimization to perform high-throughput virtual screening for highly sensitive and selective molecular probes. Our molecular design space consists of 3850 linear hydrocarbon chains with varying degrees of halogenation with and without amine- and phosphine-based headgroups. By employing a data-driven search process, we efficiently explore the molecular design space to optimize the sensitivity to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) as a prototypical PFAS analyte and selectivity relative to a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) interferent. We calculate 504 Gibbs free energies of probe-analyte and probe-interferent interactions and identify probes with PFOS association free energies of up to (-ΔG PFOS ) = 9.8 ± 0.2 kJ/mol and selectivities relative to SDS of (-ΔΔG PFOS–SDS ) = 3.1 ± 1.5 kJ/mol. A C 11 Br 23 P(CH 3 ) 2 probe containing 11 backbone brominated carbons and a tertiary phosphine headgroup possesses the most sensitive binding constant to PFOS within the defined search space of K b PFOS = 177.4 ± 12.7, and a semibrominated probe C 5 H 11 C 7 Br 14 N(CH 3 ) 2 containing 12 backbone carbons and a tertiary amine headgroup possesses the highest selectivity relative to SDS of K b PFOS /K b SDS = 4.6 ± 1.7. A retrospective analysis of our data to extract interpretable design rules reveals that the sensitivity of linear hydrogenated probes increases by approximately 1 kJ/mol per C–C bond. The addition or removal of halogen atoms and amine or phosphine headgroups produces nonmonotonic changes in both sensitivity and selectivity with changes to the sensitivity of up to 2.5 kJ/mol. Finally, this work places empirical limitations on the performance of a wide range of linear probes for PFOS detection and offers a generic strategy for high-throughput computational screening to promote selective and sensitive binding.

Synthesis of Hangman Chlorins

Two complementary rational synthetic routes have been developed in order to synthesize hangman chlorins, which differ with regard to the order of the installation (pre- and post-formation of the chlorin macrocycle) and position of the xanthene backbone about the chlorin periphery. The versatility of the synthetic method is demonstrated with the preparation of ten new hangman chlorins bearing a xanthene backbone and a pendant carboxylic acid. Cyclic voltammograms of hangman chlorins exhibit a hangman effect derived from intermolecular proton transfer. In conclusion, this hangman effect is manifested in catalytic hydrogen evolution production.

Origin of Unusual Acidity and Li+ Diffusivity in a Series of Water-in-Salt Electrolytes.

Superconcentrated aqueous electrolytes ("water-in-salt" electrolytes, or WiSEs) enable various aqueous battery chemistries beyond the voltage limits imposed by the Pourbaix diagram of water. However, their detailed structural and transport properties remain unexplored and could be better understood through added studies. Here, we report on our observations of strong acidity (pH 2.4) induced by lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) at superconcentration (at 20 mol/kg). Multiple nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and pulsed-field gradient (PFG) diffusion NMR experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that such acidity originates from the formation of nanometric ion-rich structures. The experimental and simulation results indicate the separation of water-rich and ion-rich domains at salt concentrations >= 5 m and the acidity arising therefrom is due to deprotonation of water molecules in the ion-rich domains. As such, the ion-rich domain is composed of hydrophobic -CF3 (of TFSI-) and hydrophilic hydroxyl (OH-) groups. At 20 m concentration, the tortuosity and radius of water diffusion channels are estimated to be similar to 10 and similar to 1 nm, respectively, which are close to values obtained from hydrated Nafion membranes that also have hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) backbones and hydrophilic channels consisting of SO3- ion cluster networks providing for the transport of ions and water. Thus, we have discovered the structural similarity between WiSE and hydrated Nafion membranes on the nanometer scale.

Thermodynamic Basis for the Stabilization of Helical Peptoids by Chiral Sidechains

Peptoids are a class of highly customizable biomimetic foldamers that retain properties from both proteins and polymers. It has been shown that peptoids can adopt peptide-like secondary structures through the careful selection of sidechain chemistries, but the underlying conformational landscapes that drive these assemblies at the molecular level remain poorly understood. Given the high flexibility of the peptoid backbone, it is essential that methods applied to study peptoid secondary structure formation possess the requisite sensitivity to discriminate between structurally similar yet energetically distinct microstates. In this work, a generalizable simulation scheme is used to robustly sample the complex folding landscape of various 12mer polypeptoids, resulting in a predictive model that links sidechain chemistry with preferential assembly into one of 12 accessible backbone motifs. Using a variant of the metadynamics sampling method, four peptoid dodecamers are simulated in water: sarcosine, N-(1-phenylmethyl)glycine (Npm), (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl)glycine (Nspe), and (R)-N-(1-phenylethyl)glycine (Nrpe)–to determine the underlying entropic and energetic impacts of hydrophobic and chiral peptoid sidechains on secondary structure formation. Our results indicate that the driving forces to assemble Nrpe and Nspe sequences into polyproline type-I helices in water are found to be enthalpically driven, with small benefits from an entropic gain for isomerization and steric strain due to the presence of the chiral center. The minor entropic gains from bulky chiral sidechains in Nrpe- and Nspe-containing peptoids can be explained through increased configurational entropy in the cis state. However, overall assembly into a helix is found to be overall entropically unfavorable. Furthermore, these results highlight the importance of considering the many various competing interactions in the rational design of peptoid secondary structure building blocks.

Interrupted DNA and Slow Silver Cluster Luminescence

A DNA–silver cluster conjugate is a hierarchical chromophore with a partly reduced silver core embedded within the DNA nucleobases that are covalently linked by the phosphodiester backbone. Specific sites within a polymeric DNA can be targeted to spectrally tune the silver cluster. Here, the repeated (C 2 A) 6 strand is interrupted with a thymine, and the resulting (C 2 A) 2 -T-(C 2 A) 4 forms only Ag 10 6+ , a chromophore with both prompt (~1 ns) green and sustained (~10 2 μs) red luminescence. Thymine is an inert placeholder that can be removed, and the two fragments (C 2 A) 2 and (C 2 A) 4 also produce the same Ag 10 6+ adduct. In relation to (C 2 A) 2 T(C 2 A) 4 , the (C 2 A) 2 + (C 2 A) 4 pair is distinguished because the red Ag 10 6+ luminescence is ~6× lower, relaxes ~30% faster, and is quenched ~2× faster with O 2 . These differences suggest that a specific break in the phosphodiester backbone can regulate how a contiguous vs broken scaffold wraps and better protects its cluster adduct.

Cyclic Topology Enhancing Structural Ordering and Stability of Comb-Shaped Polypeptoid Thin Films against Melt-Induced Dewetting

We investigated the effect of cyclic chain topology on the molecular ordering and thermal stability of comb-shaped polypeptoid thin films on silicon (Si) substrates. Cyclic and linear poly(N-decylglycine) (PNDG) bearing long n-decyl side chains were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of N-decylglycine-derived N-carboxyanhydrides. When the spin-coated thin films were subjected to thermal annealing at temperatures above the melting temperature (T > T m ), the cyclic PNDG films exhibited significantly enhanced stability against melt-induced dewetting than the linear counterparts (l-PNDG). When recrystallized at temperatures below the crystallization temperature (T < T c ), the homogeneous c-PNDG films exhibit enhanced crystalline ordering relative to the macroscopically dewetted l-PNDG films. Both cyclic and linear PNDG molecules adopt cis-amide conformations in the crystalline film, which transition into trans-amide conformations upon melting. A top-down solvent leaching treatment of both l/c-PNDG films revealed the formation of an irreversibly physisorbed monolayer with similar thickness (ca. 3 nm) on the Si substrate. The physisorbed monolayers are more disordered relative to the respective thicker crystalline films for both cyclic and linear PNDGs. Upon heating above T m , the adsorbed c-PNDG chains adopt trans-amide backbone conformation identical with the free c-PNDG molecules in the molten film. By contrast, the backbone conformations of l-PNDG chains in the adsorbed layers are notably different from those of the free chains in the molten film. We postulate that the conformational disparity between the chains in the physically adsorbed layers versus the free chains in the molten film is an important factor to account for the difference in the thermal stability of PNDG thin films. These findings highlight the use of cyclic chain topology to suppress the melt-induced dewetting in polymer thin films.

Self-Assembly of Flexible Linear–Semiflexible Bottlebrush–Flexible Linear Triblock Copolymers

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly is a fundamental process in which incompatible blocks spontaneously form organized microstructures with broad practical applications. Classical understanding is that the domain spacing is limited by the contour length of the polymer backbone. Here, using a combination of molecular design, chemical synthesis, small-/wide-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and electron tomography, we discover that this molecular picture does not hold for architecturally semiflexible BCPs. For strongly segregated linear–semiflexible bottlebrush–linear triblock copolymers, the size of the bottlebrush domain can be twice the bottlebrush backbone contour length. The mechanism of such anomalous self-assembly is likely that the interfacial repulsion between the incompatible blocks is large enough to pull a part of the linear end blocks into the bottlebrush domain. This effectively increases the bottlebrush domain size. Moreover, the semiflexible bottlebrush widens the regime for the cylinder morphology that is associated with the volume fraction of the end blocks fC SFB ∈ (0.10, >0.41). This window is much wider than that for flexible linear BCPs, fC F ∈ (0.14, 0.35), and that predicted by the recent self-consistent field theory for linear-bottlebrush BCPs of the same chemistry and molecular architecture. Finally, our experimental findings reveal previously unrecognized mechanisms for the self-assembly of architecturally complex BCPs.
