Tectonic wedging in the forearc basin - Accretionary prism transition, Lesser Antilles forearc

This paper describes regional structure of the inner forearc of the southern Lesser Antilles, which contains an extensive 50-70 km wide inner forearc deformation belt (IFDB) developed above crystalline basement of the undeformed forearc basin (FAB), close to and perhaps above its probable subduction trace with Atlantic lithosphere. The IFDB is analyzed, with emphasis placed on five transects across the belt, using mainly migrated seismic sections and balanced model cross sections. The IFDB features and its evolution are discussed, with special attention given to the major structures divided by early and late stages of development, paleobathymetric history, event timing, displacement and strain, and alternative tectonic explanations.

A Body Modification to Reduce Drag Due to Wedge Angle of Wing with Unswept Trailing Edge

Ward's slender-body-theory formula for zero-lift drag contains three integrals plus a base-drag term. Two of these integral terms depend only upon the cross-sectional area distribution of the body. The third integral term depends only upon the body shape and axial slopes at the base of the body. This term is neglected in the transonic area rule because in many cases it is zero; however, there are also many cases in which it is not zero. This paper examines the term for the possibility of drag reduction for a particular case. The model considered consists of a body of revolution in combination with any wing that has an unswept trailing edge and a constant trailing-edge angle along its span. It is found that (neglecting any change in base drag) a drag reduction is obtainable which, for the case considered, is an additional 12 percent of that obtained with the area-rule modification. The probable effect of viscosity on this theoretical result is discussed.

On dipolarization and its relation to the substorm current wedge

The near-earth properties of magnetospheric substorms are investigated using the Hesse and Birn (1991) self-consistent 3D MHD model of magnetotail activity. The simulation shows that an increase of Bz, a decrease of the cross-tail current, and an increase of region-1 field-aligned currents occurs roughly simultaneously, consistent with the empirical picture described by McPherron et al. (1973). It was also found that the region where the cross-tail current is reduced and diverted is located tailward from the dipolarization region. The results indicate that the apparent tailward propagation of the dipolarization effects does not support an earlier suggestion that the underlying process is initiated further earthward.

Mixing and combustion effects in a sliding-wedge ram accelerator with hydrogen injection

The ram accelerator concept has been envisioned as the basis of a ground-based flight-test facility concept in which the test section follows the ram-accelerated projectile, and allows hydrogen mixing/combustion experiments to be conducted when hydrogen carried by the projectile is injected into the freestream. A numerical simulation is presently conducted for such mixing and combustion; the chemical reactions in question are modeled using a seven-step, seven-species model. A grid-adaptation procedure is used to resolve flow features in areas of high fluid and species gradients.
