Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton from ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production in association with jets

This article presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, AT-LASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The new data sets considered are the measurements of W + and W - boson and Z boson production in association with jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8TeV performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with integrated luminosities of 20.2 fb -1 and 19.9 fb -1 , respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb -1 and deep-inelastic-scattering data from e ± p collisions at the HERA accelerator. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken x is shown, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities in the range x ≲ 0.02 found by previous ATLAS analyses.

Shock-induced phase transitions and stacking fault formation in additively manufactured eutectic high-entropy alloy Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2

Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2 additively manufactured using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is among the toughest as-built alloys reported and is a promising candidate for use in extreme environments. However, its behavior under multi-megabar pressure regimes remains unexplored. We used femtosecond in situ X-ray diffraction to investigate the shock response of LPBF Ni40Co20Fe10Cr10Al18W2 under laser-driven shock compression and release. Our results reveal that the initial dual-phase face-centered + body-centered structure transforms to a single face-centered phase over a wide pressure range of 84±10 to 277±55 GPa, followed by a transition to a single body-centered phase at 431±48 GPa. We establish the Hugoniot equation-of-state of LPBF Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2 and compare it to the benchmark alloy AlCoCrFeNi 2.1 , demonstrating the effects of W-doping and increased Al content. High stacking fault probabilities, close to those measured in Au and Ag, are observed upon compression. A portion of the stacking faults are annihilated upon release to ambient pressure.

The effects of composition on mechanical properties of W-4Re-Hf-C alloys

Studies were made of the effects of alloy composition on the mechanical behavior of as-worked W-4Re-Hf-C alloys containing up to about 0.8 mol % Hfc. Extracted second-phase particles were analyzed and related to alloy composition and creep strength. While strengthening is attributed to HfC particles, the presence of excess hafnium or carbon (above the calculated amounts for stoichiometric HfC) in swaged W-4Re-Hf-C alloys generally causes a reduction of the high-temperature (1930 C) tensile strength; maximum creep strength is, however, indicated for alloys with a slight (about 0.05 to 0.1 at. %) excess of hafnium. Particle strengthening is reduced by WC in solid solution with HfC for allow compositions with an excess of carbon. The low-temperature ductility of worked W-4Re-Hf-C alloys appears to be far more dependent on the amount of excess C or Hf present than on the HfC particle content in the range studies.

Tropospheric Ozone Over a Tropical Atlantic Station in the Northern Hemisphere: Paramaribo, Surinam (6 deg N, 55 deg W)

We present an analysis of 2.5 years of weekly ozone soundings conducted at a new monitoring station in Paramaribo, Surinam (6 deg N,55 deg W). This is currently one of only three ozone sounding stations in the northern hemisphere (NH) tropics, and the only one in the equatorial Atlantic region. Paramaribo is part of the Southern Hemisphere ADditional Ozone Sounding program (SHADOZ). Due to its position close to the equator, the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) passes over Paramaribo twice per year, which results in a semi-annual seasonality of many parameters including relative humidity and ozone. The dataset from Paramaribo is used to: (1) evaluate ozone variability relative to precipitation, atmospheric circulation patterns and biomass burning; (2) contrast ozone at the NH equatorial Atlantic with that at nearby southern hemisphere (SH) stations Natal (6 deg S,35 deg W) and Ascension (8 deg S,14 deg W); (3) compare the seasonality of tropospheric ozone with a satellite-derived ozone product: Tropical Tropospheric Ozone Columns from the Modified Residual method (MR-TTOC). We find that Paramaribo is a distinctly Atlantic station. Despite its position north of the equator, it resembles nearby SH stations during most of the year. Transport patterns in the lower and middle troposphere during February and March differ from SH stations, which leads to a seasonality of ozone with two maxima. MR-TTOC over Paramaribo does not match the observed seasonality of ozone due to the use of a SH ozone sonde climatology in the MR method. The Paramaribo ozone record is used to suggest an improvement for northern hemisphere MR-TTOC retrievals. We conclude that station Paramaribo shows unique features in the region, and clearly adds new information to the existing SHADOZ record.

Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

A search for a heavy Higgs boson in the mass range from 0.2 to 3.0 TeV, decaying to a pair of W bosons, is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The W boson pair decays are reconstructed in the 2$\ell$2$\nu$ and $\ell\nu$2q final states (with $\ell =$ e or $\mu$). Both gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production of the signal are considered. Interference effects between the signal and background are also taken into account. The observed data are consistent with the standard model (SM) expectation. Combined upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction exclude a heavy Higgs boson with SM-like couplings and decays up to 1870 GeV. Exclusion limits are also set in the context of a number of two-Higgs-doublet model formulations, further reducing the allowed parameter space for SM extensions.

Model-independent measurement of the Higgs boson associated production with two jets and decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A model-independent measurement of the differential production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of W bosons, with a final state including two jets produced in association, is presented. In the analysis, events are selected in which the decay products of the two W bosons consist of an electron, a muon, and missing transverse momentum. The model independence of the measurement is maximized by employing a discriminating variable, developed through machine learning, that is agnostic to the signal hypothesis. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected with the CMS detector from 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The production cross section is measured as a function of the difference in azimuthal angle between the two jets. The differential cross section measurements are used to constrain Higgs boson couplings within the standard model effective field theory framework.

Search for a heavy resonance decaying into a top quark and a W boson in the lepton+jets final state at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a heavy resonance decaying into a top quark and a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data analyzed were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The top quark is reconstructed as a single jet and the W boson, from its decay into an electron or muon and the corresponding neutrino. A top quark tagging technique based on jet clustering with a variable distance parameter and simultaneous jet grooming is used to identify jets from the collimated top quark decay. The results are interpreted in the context of two benchmark models, where the heavy resonance is either an excited bottom quark b* or a vector-like quark B. A statistical combination with an earlier search by the CMS Collaboration in the all-hadronic final state is performed to place upper cross section limits on these two models. The new analysis extends the lower range of resonance mass probed from 1.4 down to 0.7 TeV. For left-handed, right-handed, and vector-like couplings, b* masses up to 3.0, 3.0, and 3.2 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. The observed upper limits represent the most stringent constraints on the b* model to date.

The microstructure and He + ion irradiation behavior of novel low-activation W-Ta-Cr-V refractory high entropy alloy for nuclear applications

Microstructure and nanohardness of a nearly equimolar W-Ta-Cr-V high entropy alloy (HEA), as well as its irradiation response under He + irradiation, were investigated. The single-phase body-centered cubic nanostructured alloy with a 1 µm thick layer was fabricated on a silicon substrate using a magnetron sputtering method. The HEA film has a complex microstructure consisting of micrometric domains that exhibit internal nanostructure controlled by their crystal orientation. The measured nanohardness of the W-Ta-Cr-V alloy is 13 ± 2 GPa, which significantly exceeds the hardness of nanocrystalline tungsten as a result of the high solid-solution strengthening effect. In order to evaluate the irradiation resistance of the HEA film, the material was irradiated with 200 keV He + ions at room temperature, with two different ion fluences: 1 × 10 16 and 5 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 . Using transmission electron microscopy, a high density of extremely fine He bubbles is observed that were uniformly distributed in the matrix. The increase of He + ion fluence increased the density of bubbles, whereas their size remained at a similar level, which indicates that the damage proceeds by the nucleation of additional He bubbles, not by their growth.

Search for a boosted Higgs boson decaying to bottom quark pairs in association with a W or Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV

A search is conducted for standard model Higgs bosons with large transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) decaying to bottom quark pairs and produced in association with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson at the LHC. The result is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector in 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Boosted Higgs, W, and Z boson decays are reconstructed using large-radius jets with $p_\mathrm{T}$$\gt$ 450 GeV and identified with heavy-flavor classifiers based on a graph convolutional neural network. The observed signal strength relative to the standard model expectation is $μ$ = 0.72 $^{+0.75}_{-0.71}$ including statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Study of the normalized transverse momentum distribution of W bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV

We present a study of the normalized transverse momentum distribution of W bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.35 fb -1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The measurement focuses on the transverse momentum region below 15 GeV, which is of special interest for electroweak precision measurements; it relies on the same detector calibration methods which were used for the precision measurement of the W boson mass. The measured distribution is compared to different QCD predictions and a procedure is given to allow the comparison of any further theoretical models to the D0 data.

Measurement of the Lund jet plane in hadronic decays of top quarks and W bosons with the ATLAS detector

The Lund jet plane (LJP) is measured for the first time in $t\bar{t}$ events, using 140 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV pp collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The LJP is a two-dimensional observable of the sub-structure of hadronic jets that acts as a proxy for the kinematics of parton showers and hadron formation. The observable is constructed from charged particles and is measured for R = 1.0 anti-$k_t$ jets with transverse momentum above 350 GeV containing the full decay products of either a top quark or a daughter W boson. The other top quark in the event is identified from its decay into a b-quark, an electron or a muon and a neutrino. The measurement is corrected for detector effects and compared with a range of Monte Carlo predictions sensitive to different aspects of the hadronic decays of the heavy particles. In the W-boson-initiated jets, all the predictions are incompatible with the measurement. In the top quark initiated jets, disagreement with all predictions is observed in smaller subregions of the plane, and with a subset of the predictions across the fiducial plane. The measurement could be used to improve the tuning of Monte Carlo generators, for better modelling of hadronic decays of heavy quarks and bosons, or to improve the performance of jet taggers.

Selective Antisite Defect Formation in WS 2 Monolayers via Reactive Growth on Dilute W-Au Alloy Substrates

Defects are ubiquitous in 2D materials and can affect the structure and properties of the materials and also introduce new functionalities. Methods to adjust the structure and density of defects during bottom-up synthesis are required to control the growth of 2D materials with tailored optical and electronic properties. In this study, the authors present an Au-assisted chemical vapor deposition approach to selectively form S W and S2 W antisite defects, whereby one or two sulfur atoms substitute for a tungsten atom in WS 2 monolayers. Guided by first-principles calculations, they describe a new method that can maintain tungsten-poor growth conditions relative to sulfur via the low solubility of W atoms in a gold/W alloy, thereby significantly reducing the formation energy of the antisite defects during the growth of WS 2 . The atomic structure and composition of the antisite defects are unambiguously identified by Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and their total concentration is statistically determined, with levels up to ≈5.0%. Furthermore, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations also verified these antisite defects and revealed the localized defect states in the bandgap of WS 2 monolayers. This bottom-up synthesis method to form antisite defects should apply in the synthesis of other 2D materials.

Ionothermally Synthesized Nanoporous Ti 0.95 W 0.05 Nb 2 O 7 : a Novel Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Although TiNb 2 O 7 is regarded as a fast-rechargeable lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode material, the intrinsic poor electrochemical kinetics of TiNb 2 O 7 still dramatically impedes its development. Herein, an ionothermal synthesis-assisted doping strategy is proposed for the preparation of a new W 6+ -doped TiNb 2 O 7 material (Ti 0.95 W 0.05 Nb 2 O 7 ) with nanoporous structure (denoted as NPTWNO). The improved Li + diffusion coefficient of NPTWNO suggests that the ionic-liquid-templated nanoporous architecture improves the Li+ diffusion kinetics. The density functional theory computational study reveals that the doped W 6+ successfully boosts the electronic conductivity due to the narrowed conduction-valance bandgap resulted from charge redistribution, which is reflected by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data. With the simultaneously enhanced Li+ diffusivity and electronic conductivity, NPTWNO achieves fast-rechargeability in LIBs. So this work indicates the potential of ionothermal synthesis-assisted doping strategy on energy storage materials and offers NPTWNO material with promising electrochemical performance.

Hadronic mono- W ' probes of dark matter at colliders

Particle collisions at the energy frontier can probe the nature of invisible dark matter via production in association with recoiling visible objects. We propose a new potential production mode, in which dark matter is produced by the decay of a heavy dark Higgs boson radiated from a heavy W' boson. In such a model, motivated by left-right symmetric theories, dark matter would not be pair produced in association with other recoiling objects due to its lack of direct coupling to quarks or gluons. We study the hadronic decay mode via W' → tb and estimate the LHC exclusion sensitivity at 95% confidence level to be 10 2 - 10 5 fb for W' boson masses between 250 and 1750 GeV.

Search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a charm quark and decaying to a W boson pair in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

This paper presents a search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a charm quark (cH) which allows to probe the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling strength modifier κ$_{c}$. Higgs boson decays to a pair of W bosons are considered, where one W boson decays to an electron and a neutrino, and the other W boson decays to a muon and a neutrino. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$, were collected between 2016 and 2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the ratio of the measured yield to the standard model expectation for cH production. The observed (expected) upper limit is 1065 (506), corresponding to an observed (expected) constraint of |κ$_{c}$| < 211 (95). When combined with the previous search for cH in the diphoton decay channel of the Higgs boson, the limits are interpreted as observed (expected) constraints at 95% CL on the value of κ$_{c}$, |κ$_{c}$| < 47 (51).[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Theoretical level energies, radiative lifetimes and transitions in W IX

The atomic states of the W IX (W{sup 8+}) tungsten ion lying below the W{sup 9+} ionisation threshold have been studied theoretically, employing the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method with configuration interaction. The level electronic structures and their energies are presented. The electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) radiative transitions have been computed in order to calculate the radiative lifetimes of given states. Transition wavelengths, energies, and decay rates are also presented for selected high-intensity E1 transitions. The configuration interaction method was applied to estimate electron correlation effects. The aim of the present research was to fill a lack of atomic data for low-charged tungsten ions, which may be useful in low-temperature plasma diagnostics and may form the base for collisional–radiative modelling of spectra for low-charged tungsten ions.

Effects of neutron irradiation on hydrogen isotope permeation on W-Re

Hydrogen and deuterium permeation behavior for neutron damaged W and W-3 %Re was evaluated using a Plasma Driven Permeation device. For neutron damaged W-3 %Re at 773 K and 1473 K, precipitation of Re and Os was observed by atom probe tomography. Neutron irradiation introduced defect damage throughout the sample and enhanced H and D diffusion toward downstream side. The existence of irradiation damage by neutron irradiation was found to increase hydrogen isotope permeation. Moreover, the existence of Re has suppressed the formation of irradiation defects for hydrogen isotope trapping sites. Further, the recovery of irradiation defects by increasing the irradiation temperature led to the structural changes due to the diffusion of Re and Os, which also affected the hydrogen isotope permeation behavior.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of CeFe 11 M (M = Mo, W)

Tetragonal CeFe 11 Mo (struct. type ThMn 12 , a = 8.529(1) Å, c = 4.766(1) Å, V = 346.68(1) Å 3 ) and novel isostructural CeFe 11 W (a = 8.539(1) Å, c = 4.754(1) Å, V = 346.62(1) Å 3 ) are obtained in bulk, as homogenized single-phase arc-melted alloys. Here, their crystal structures are evaluated by full profile Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction patterns which confirm that Ce occupies the 2a atomic site in both cases, whereas atomic disorder is present in the Fe-sublattice, i.e., predominantly on the dumbbell 8i site and minorly on two other sites 8j and 8f. In CeFe 11 Mo the third element, M, is mixed with Fe on the 8i dumbbell site and 8f atomic position, whereas in CeFe 11 W, M is mixed on the 8i and 8j Fe sites. In these bulk CeFe 12-x M x alloys the tetragonal structure persists at lower M content, x < 1 here, in comparison to known similar alloys, with x > 1. Because of the low M content, comparably higher values of mass magnetization and Curie temperature are achieved i.e., CeFe 11 Mo: ϭ s = 104 emu/g (14.7 µ B /f.u.), T c = 420 K and CeFe 11 W: ϭ s = 99 emu/g (16.5 µ B /f.u.), T c = 450 K. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy is uniaxial with anisotropy fields H a ∼ 14.5 and 16.5 kOe, respectively. Based on Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy enhancements, using tungsten as the stabilizing dopant is more beneficial than molybdenum.
