Chemical characteristics and origin of H chondrite regolith breccias

Petrologic data and contents of Ag, Bi, Cd, Co, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, Se, Te, Tl and Zn-trace elements spanning the volatility/mobility range-in light and dark portions of H chondrite regolith breccias and L chondrite fragmental breccias are reported. The chemical/petrologic characteristics of H chondrite regolith breccias differ from those of nonbrecciated chondrites or fragmental breccias. Petrologic characteristics and at least some trace element contents of H chondrite regolith breccias reflect primary processes; contents of the most volatile/mobile elements may reflect either primary or secondary processing, possibly within layered H chondrite parent object(s). Chemical/petrologic differences existed in different regions of the parent(s). Regoligh formation and gardening and meteoroid compaction were not so severe as to alter compositions markedly.

Siderophile, lithophile and mobile trace elements in the lunar meteorite Allan Hills 81005

The content of trace elements (siderophile Co, Au, As, Sb, Ga; chalcophile/mobile Se, Te, Bi, In, Ag, Zn, Tl, Cd; lithophile Rb, Cs, U) is investigated to ascertain whether the meteorite is of lunar origin. Five elements reflect lunar crustal processes, whereas the remaining 11 siderophile and mobile elements suggest 1.4 + or - 0.5 percent micrometeorite admixture or enrichment by thermal redistribution on the moon. It is found that the impact launching of ALH A81005 to the earth was not attended by substantial shock loading. A Martian origin for severely shocked SNC meteorites is therefore considered plausible.

Chemical studies of L chondrites. III - Mobile trace elements and Ar-40/Ar-39 ages

Radiochemical neutron activation analysis has been used to determine the content of the mobile trace elements Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Co, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, Se, Te, Tl, and Zn, in L4-6 chondrites with undisturbed Ar-40 release patterns or patterns showing some 4.4-4.6 Gyr plateau disturbance that indicates some shock-induced loss. The mean concentrations are significantly lower in 16 chondrites with disturbed patterns than in 4 with undisturbed ones, consistent with shock-induced mobilization. Significantly lower mean concentrations of nearly all trace elements in 26 strongly shocked chondrites than in 14 mildly shocked ones indicate loss in shock-formed FeS-Fe eutectic and/or by means of vaporization during cooling of shock-heated collisional debris.

Balloon observations of hard X-rays from NGC 4151 and an X-ray transient source

An X-ray telescope consisting of 400 sq cm phoswich detectors (NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na)) was flown from Hyderabad (India) on 31 October 1980; the field of view was 11 deg x 1 deg FWHM. During a five hour observation at 5 millibars two X-ray sources were seen: (1) the variable Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4151; and (2) a transident of approximately 8 minutes duration in the vicinity of the variable source 4U1444 43 which may be associated with the galaxy NGC 5608. X-ray fluxes and spectra in 18-120 keV X-rays are presented.

Measured performance of the new University of California gamma ray telescope

The design of the new medium energy balloon-borne gamma ray telescope is discussed. This telescope is sensitive to 1-30 MeV gamma rays. The results of the initial calibration are described. The position and energy resolutions of 32 plastic and NaI(Tl) scintillator bars, each 100 cm long are discussed. The telescope's measured angular and energy resolutions as a function of incident angle are compared with detailed Monte Carlo calculations at 1.37, 2.75 and 6.13 MeV. The expected resolutions are 5 deg FHWM and 8% at 2.75 MeV. The expected area-efficiency is 250 cm.

Cosmic ray secular variations in terrestrial records and aurorae

The rediscovery that the Sun and the solar wind can undergo important changes on historical time scales has brought into question the stability of the cyclic behavior of past time series of solar and solar-terrestrial origin. It was found by Vector Fourier analysis that the solar 11 year cycle is present in the series of 10Be, delta 180, in ice cores and of thermoluminescence (TL) in sea sediments during the last Millennia with a frequency modulation, related to the Sun behavior, as tested by comparison with the Sunspot number R sub z series. It was shown that the cyclogram of the series of yearly Aurorae from 1721 to 1979 linear-regression-corrected-for-R sub z is straight for the periodicity zeta=11,1y, which indicates that such periodicity is constant in time corresponding to the only line present in the 11y band. The maxima of this component appear at the same time together with the high speed solar wind streams taking place in coronal holes situated in high heliolatitudes. It is evidenced that the 11 year cycle has undergone frequency oscillations on a time scale of two centuries, although it is very difficult to determine the periodicities with high accuracy.

Hybrid TLC-pair meter for the Sphinx Project

The chief aims in THE SPHINX PROJECT are research of super lepton physics and new detector experiments. At the second phase of THE SPHINX PROJECT, a hybrid TLC-PAIR METER was designed for measuring high energy neutrino sources (E upsilon * TeV), searching high energy muon sources (E mu TeV) and measuring muon group (E mu 1 TeV). The principle of PAIR METER has been already proposed. In this TLC-PAIR METER, electromagnetic shower induced by cosmic ray muons are detected using TL (Thermoluminescence) sheets with position counters.

Monte Carlo simulation of a new gamma ray telescope

A new Monte Carlo code has been written to simulate the response of the new University of California double scatter gamma ray telescope. This package of modular software routines, written in VAX FORTRAN 77 simulates the detection of 0.1 to 35 MeV gamma rays. The new telescope is flown from high altitude balloons to measure medium energy gamma radiation from astronomical sources. This paper presents (1) the basic physics methods in the code, and (2) the predicted response functions of the telescope. Gamma ray processes include Compton scattering, pair production and photoelectric absorption in plastic scintillator, NaI(Tl) and aluminum. Electron transport processes include ionization energy loss, multiple scattering, production of bremsstrahlung photons and positron annihilation.

EGRET - The high energy gamma ray telescope for NASA's Gamma Ray Observatory

The EGRET high energy gamma-ray telescope under development for NASA's Gamma Ray Observatory will have an energy range of approximately 12 to 30,000 MeV, energy resolution of about 15 percent FWHM over most of that range, an effective area of about 2000 sq cm at high energies, and single photon angular accuracy of approximately 2 deg at 100 MeV, less than 0.1 deg above 5 GeV. This instrument can locate strong sources to an accuracy of about 5 arc min. The instrument utilizes a set of digital spark chambers interleaved with tantalum foils for detection and identification of gamma-ray events, and a large NaI(Tl) scintillator for energy determination. The system is triggered by a coincidence matrix using two arrays of plastic scintillation counters and a large plastic scintillator anticoincidence dome that rejects incident charged particles.

On the chondrite-achondrite transition - Mineralogy and chemistry of Yamato 74160 (LL7)

Petrology, mineralogic properties and contents of major elements and trace elements Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Co, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, Se, Te, Tl, U and Zn are reported (determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis) in Yamato 74160, interpreted as an LL7 chondrite. All properties are consistent with this meteorite having been recrystallized and partially melted locally once at temperatures well above 1090 C under conditions such that some minerals (e.g. plagioclase, euhedral pyroxene, tetrataenite) grew from melt pockets and siderophilic and chalcophilic elements were lost by extraction into eutectic melt that drained away. Inhomogeneous plagioclase compositions and mobile element loss suggest shock as the most likely heat source. Yamato 74160, while inferentially chondritic, is a larval achondrite: even higher temperatures and longer times would have been required to cause the separations necessary to transform it to an identifiable achondrite type.

H-chondrites - Trace element clues to their origin

RNAA is used to determine the abundances of 20 trace elements in four H4, two H3, two H5, and two H6 chondrites from the British Museum, as a contribution to a multiple-method study of these objects. The results are presented in tables and graphs and analyzed in terms of the inhomogeneity of the parent bodies and the depletion of volatiles in the higher petrologic types. Features observed include siderophile depletion in H3 chondrites; systematic variation of siderophile abundance pattern with petrologic type; volatile depletion as a primary feature; mineralogy consistent with accretion at 420-500 K; and the factor-analysis groupings siderophiles (Os, Re, Ir, Ni, Pd, Au, and Ge), volatiles (Ag, Br, In, Cd, Bi, and Tl), and alkalis (Rb and Cs).

Mobile trace element contents in Jilin chondrite

A determination is conducted of ppm-ppt levels of Co, Se, Ga, Rb, Cs, Te, Bi, Ag, In, Tl, Zn and Cd (arranged empirically in order of increasing mobility at 1000 C) by radiochemical neutron activation analysis in eight Jilin samples of known Ar-40 content and a large vein from one of these. The trace element contents of the vein do not differ markedly from those of Jilin whole-rock samples. Only Rb correlates with Ar-40, possibly due to chance. All elements but Cd are present at levels similar to thdse in H4-6 chondrites with long K/Ar age (i.e., presumably mildly shocked). These levels are low relative to those in analogous L4-6 chondrites suggesting that H chondrites formed and/or evolved under higher pre-shock temperatures than did mildly shocked L chondrites. Time-temperature conditions during shock-loading of Jilin parent material were mild relative to those in strongly shocked L chondrites, being sufficient at most only to mobilize Cd.

Liquid Phase Miscibility Gap Materials

The manner in which the microstructural features of liquid-phase miscibility gap alloys develop was determined. This will allow control of the microstructures and the resultant properties of these alloys. The long-duration low gravity afforded by the shuttle will allow experiments supporting this research to be conducted with minimal interference from buoyancy effects and gravitationally driven convection currents. Ground base studies were conducted on Al-In, Cu-Pb, and Te-Tl alloys to determine the effect of cooling rate, composition, and interfacial energies on the phase separation and solidification processes that influence the development of microstructure in these alloys. Isothermal and directional cooling experiments and simulations are conducted. The ground based activities are used as a technological base from which flight experiments formulated and to which these flight experiments are compared.

Mechanical testing of large thallium doped sodium iodide single crystals

The findings of mechanical tests performed on five thallium-doped sodium iodide NaI(Tl) crystals are presented. These crystals are all in the shape of circular flat plates, 20.0 in. in diameter an d0.5 in. thick. The test setup, testing procedure, and the test data are presented. Large crystals exhibit a high degree of material plasticity, as well as a much higher strength than previously anticipated, on the order of 500 psi. Also revealed from the testing is the fact that crystal with a large number of grain boundaries developed less plasticity, and therefore less permanent deformation, than those with fewer grain boundaries.

Marching iterative methods for the parabolized and thin layer Navier-Stokes equations

Downstream marching iterative schemes for the solution of the Parabolized or Thin Layer (PNS or TL) Navier-Stokes equations are described. Modifications of the primitive equation global relaxation sweep procedure result in efficient second-order marching schemes. These schemes take full account of the reduced order of the approximate equations as they behave like the SLOR for a single elliptic equation. The improved smoothing properties permit the introduction of Multi-Grid acceleration. The proposed algorithm is essentially Reynolds number independent and therefore can be applied to the solution of the subsonic Euler equations. The convergence rates are similar to those obtained by the Multi-Grid solution of a single elliptic equation; the storage is also comparable as only the pressure has to be stored on all levels. Extensions to three-dimensional and compressible subsonic flows are discussed. Numerical results are presented.

Isotopic compositions of bismuth, lead, thallium, and mercury from mini r-processing

The yields of stable isotopes of Bi, Pb, Tl and Hg as well as yields of Pb-205 are calculated with a parametrized model for 'mini r-processing' in the Ne, O, C-rich zones of explosive burning in massive stars. The Pb isotopic compositions stand out by their comparatively low Pb-207 yields and by the fact that this r-process variant yields Pb-204 quite abundantly. The average Pb-205/Pb-204 yield ratio of 6.1 is the same order of magnitude as yield ratios deduced for s-processing. The Hg from this mini r-process looks like normal solar-system mercury, but with Hg-196 missing and the light s-isotopes A = 198, 199, 200 and 201 depleted (especially the odd-A species).
