The Role of Disruptive Impacts on Ocean Generation and Longevity in Icy Moons

Among icy moons of the outer Solar System, subsurface water oceans and large collisions both seem to be common, but the impact of the latter on the presence and persistence of the former is unclear and has rarely been investigated. Here we interface a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics model to simulate collisions with a thermal-structural evolution model to simulate the evolution of moons pre-collision, post-collision and without a collision. Overall, even such large-scale collisions affect only the ocean thickness or longevity, and the presence or absence of an ocean is affected for only a part of a moon’s history. In reaccreted moons, the ocean survives the impact and becomes much thicker inside larger moons with radius near 1,000 km, whereas an ocean that would otherwise arise inside moons with radius near 500 km is absent because the collision promotes ice–rock differentiation. Our simulations have not yielded an ocean developed post-impact—whether directly via collisional or reaccretional heating or indirectly through tidal heating due to collision-induced orbital changes—in a moon that would otherwise have remained frozen. The ocean-enhancing effect is pronounced only for late disruptive impacts onto large, 1,000-km-class targets, which are unlikely in recent solar system history.

MSFC Thermal Testing Lessons Learned Course. Section 3: Lessons Learned from Protoflight StarBurst Instrument Thermal Vacuum Test

MSFC thermal engineers will be presenting lessons learned while preparing and conducting thermal tests. This course will cover practical real world examples of thermal chamber and vacuum chamber testing from engineering development units to system level testing on flight hardware. Special topics include large scale testing preparation, requirement tailoring from parent documents, and cryogenic development testing.

STABLE Study for the Habitable Worlds Observatory

We report on progress on the STABLE study, which was awarded on the NASA 2023 ROSES D.19 opportunity. In the study, we are developing technologies for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) in four areas: Micrometeoroid Impact Mitigation, Telescope Temperature Control, Ultra-Stable Telescope Structure Materials and Modeling, and Improvement of Thermal Expansion Test Capability. This study is a collaboration between Northrop Grumman, Kratos, NeXolve, JPL, STScI, NASA’s White Sands Test Facility, and NASA Goddard’s Ultra-Stable Test Facility. We will also discuss our plans for our follow-on study as part of NASA’s 2024 ROSES D.19. In this study, we will address additional technologies as well as perform analysis of HWO architecture options.

Simplified Aid for Extra-Vehicular Activity Rescue (SAFER) Battery Assessment

In 2013, the Boeing Company model 787-8 Dreamliner commercial aircraft experienced three catastrophic lithium (Li) battery failures. The cause of each failure resulted in a single-cell thermal runaway (TR) condition, which propagated to adjacent battery cells. Two of the failures involved rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries, and the third event involved a nonrechargeable lithium-manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2) battery. In response to these Li battery failures, the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) approved a technical assessment of the International Space Station Simplified Aid for Extra-Vehicular Activity Rescue (SAFER) Li non-rechargeable battery. This assessment was conducted to evaluate the SAFER Li nonrechargeable battery safety design features against Boeing 787 Dreamliner Li battery failure lessons learned. Specifically, this investigation focused on assessing the severity of a SAFER battery TR hazard conditions.

Solar Absorptance and Thermal Emittance of Some Common Spacecraft Thermal-Control Coatings

Solar absorptance and thermal emittance of spacecraft materials are critical parameters in determining spacecraft temperature control. Because thickness, surface preparation, coatings formulation, manufacturing techniques, etc. affect these parameters, it is usually necessary to measure the absorptance and emittance of materials before they are used. Absorptance and emittance data for many common types of thermal control coatings, are together with some sample spectral data curves of absorptance. In some cases for which ultraviolet and particle radiation data are available, the degraded absorptance and emittance values are also listed.

A Survey of Methods for Measuring Thermally Induced Distortions of Test Articles Undergoing Solar Thermal Vacuum Test

Various methods of measuring the small thermally induced distortions experienced either by various points on the space vehicles or by deviations of surfaces from a known shape during solar thermal vacuum tests are examined. State-of-the-art application of both photographic and real time observation are discussed. The relative merits of each of the methods are compared and evaluated in their applications to different types of test articles and situations. Magnitudes of thermally induced distortions which may be expected to be routinely measurable by the various methods are presented and compared.

Hybrid Power Purchase Agreements for Flexible 24/7 Energy Delivery – A Comprehensive Review of Current Practices and Research Pathways

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are becoming increasingly preferred among large energy consumers, such as data centers, to secure cost-effective energy and meet accelerating demand growth. Traditionally, variable renewable energy (VRE)-based PPAs operate on a pay-as-produced basis, balancing supply and demand for a relatively longer duration (e.g., annually). However, the focus is shifting toward matching supply and demand on an hourly basis to fully meet energy needs. This shift requires the integration of flexible energy resources, such as hydropower, thermal generation, and energy storage, to complement VRE sources like wind and solar, forming the foundation for 24/7 PPA. This work contributes by: (i) reviewing emerging market trends and current practices in PPA procurement, supported by data on PPA prices and technology portfolios; (ii) synthesizing the existing literature on modeling approaches for contract pricing, quantities, hybrid resource procurement, and risk management in 24/7 PPA design, while identifying key research gaps; and (iii) proposing an integrated 24/7 PPA design framework along with two contracting mechanisms from the perspectives of both PPA providers and consumers. The proposed framework highlights critical modeling challenges, risk-allocation issues, and future research opportunities for 24/7 PPA design.
