High Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Aluminized Haynes 230

The effect of reactive air aluminizing (RAA) on the high-temperature oxidation behavior of the H230 superalloy is studied at 850 °C for 600 hours. Mass gain values are measured and microstructure is studied by XRD, SEM, and EDX. Post oxidation mass gain for the aluminized alloy is reduced compared to wrought alloy. A three-zone microstructure of diffusion coating is observed in RAA H230. Formation and growth of alumina scale during RAA process and oxidation is attributed to the complementary roles of ß-NiAl + ?'-Ni3Al phases in the composite coating.

Measuring Relative Energies of Ligand Binding Conformations on Nanocluster Surfaces with Temperature-Dependent FTIR Spectroscopy

We present a method to measure relative energies between binding conformations of carboxylate ligands on InP magic-sized clusters in solution. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo global fitting analysis on temperature-dependent vibrational spectra of cluster-bound ligands, we observe significantly different relative energies between various bidentate and monodentate binding motifs. Relative to the monodentate motif, the chelating conformation is 0.7 ± 0.3 kcal/mol more stable and the syn–syn bridging conformation is 1.1 ± 0.5 kcal/mol more stable, but the syn–anti bridging conformation exhibits no significant difference. Our results demonstrate that the relative energy between monodentate-bound carboxylates and unbound carboxylic acids is 4.52 ± 0.05 kcal/mol, or 1582 ± 19 cm –1 , nearly identical to the carboxylate asymmetric stretching frequency. Here, we suggest that the ligand vibrational energy may play a key role in ligand dissociation by compensating for energy differences between bound and dissociated ligand states. This approach gives important experimental insights into ligand binding and can inform future nanocrystal surface engineering.

Development of low temperature fuel cell holders for Operando x-ray micro and nano computed tomography to visualize water distribution

Abstract Synchrotron x-ray imaging techniques, like x-ray computed tomography (CT) and radiography have proven instrumental in expanding the communities knowledge of complex transport and reaction kinetics in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells and electrolyzers. This work presents the development of novel x-ray CT imaging techniques for operando visualization of water within low temperature fuel cells at spatial resolutions spanning the micro and nano scales. The design of operando sample holders, for both micro x-ray CT and nano CT experiments is described in depth, and prototypes of these sample holders were evaluated across a set of requirements, the most important of which are x-ray transmissibility, electrical conductivity and mechanical stability. Water segmentation from micro x-ray CT data was enabled by an image subtraction method, where the image without water is subtracted from the one with water. Through iterative experimentations, the operando nano CT cell was developed to optimize mechanical compression, electric conductivity and gas flow. While three-dimensional fuel cell reconstructions were shown possible, there remain challenges to overcome at typical lower energies (8 keV) due to beam damage, whereas it is not as significant for higher energies (>17.5 keV).

Translation of "Contribution a l'etude du diagramme pression-temperature du beryllium pur" (Contribution to the Study of the Pressure-Temperature Diagram of Pure Beryllium)

An unusual feature of beryllium’s phase diagram is the transition from a hexagonal close packed (hcp, or α) to a body-centered cubic (bcc, or β) structure ~20 K below the normal melting temperature of T melt ≈ 1560 K. An early thermal analysis of 99.7% pure Be found two arrests1 : one at 1533-1536 K and another at 1551-1557 K. Without ruling out an allotropic transformation in Be itself, Sloman attributed the first of these to solidification of a Be-BeO eutectic. Losano observed only the higher of the two in 99.962% Be, seeming to confirm the notion that the lower feature was an artifact of impurity. Teitel (99.4%) also measured two arrests and attributed the lower to impurity, but questioned whether oxygen was the culprit.

A Comparison of Novel Woodstove Catalytic Combustors to Improve Low Temperature Light off and Catalyst Stability at High Temperatures and Corrosive Environments, Including Stability of Catalytic Combustors used in Coastal Environments

Wood heaters with catalytic combustors often emit higher levels of particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at startup before the catalytic combustor is at operational temperature. This project aims to advance wood heater catalytic combustor technology by studying degradation mechanisms in failed field catalysts and using those insights to develop an improved catalytic combustor. Findings will provide critical insights into the degradation mechanisms of wood heater catalytic combustors and inform the design of catalysts that deliver improved efficiency, durability, and performance compared to current commercial products. The outcomes of this project will not only improve catalytic combustor technology but also contribute to operational guidelines to extend catalyst lifetimes.

High-temperature NMR MAS probe with optimized temperature gradient across sample rotor

A rotor housing assembly for NMR spectroscopy. An elongate rotor has a distal drive end, a proximal end and an internal sample space positioned along its length between the drive and proximal ends. The rotor is driveable about a rotation axis by a drive gas flow. A rotor housing has an interior space in which the rotor is at least partially received. At least one first heated gas flow inlet is positioned opposite the internal sample space, through which a first heated gas flow is controllably flowable into the interior space to heat it and the rotor. At least a pair of spaced apart second heated gas flow outlets are axially spaced from the first heated gas flow inlet to controllably convey a second heated gas flow to heat distal and proximal areas of the sample space to minimize a temperature gradient extending axially within the sample space.

Low-temperature liquid-phase synthesis of lithium thiophosphate-borohydride solid electrolyte with high room-temperature ionic conductivity

Embodiments relate to a scalable liquid-phase synthesis technique of lithium thiophosphate-borohydride solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity at room temperature and its use in all-solid-state lithium batteries. A battery comprises an anode, a cathode, and a solid electrolyte layer positioned between the anode and the cathode. The liquid-phase synthesized solid electrolyte material can be used as the solid electrolyte layer or incorporated into anodes or cathodes.

High-temperature Superconducting Interconnects for Ultra-low Temperature, High-field Environments

Coplanar (with the ground) 20 cm long waveguides are manufactured from the YBCO-on-Kapton material. We investigate the effect of parasitic ground plane resonances on the performance of these waveguides. Here, it is concluded that dense rows stitching vias are essential for isolating the lines to a level below 60 dB at 6 GHz. We demonstrate a metalized via technology that is compatible with both the traditional Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) process and the epitaxial YBCO material. Stitching via fence with the via period 10 mm is shown as effective in suppressing parasitic resonances at 77 K.

Snow-substrate interface temperature and air temperature for the SALVO 2019 Campaign

The springtime, surface-albedo transition in the Alaskan Arctic and the forcings that determine the duration and nature of that transition are the focus of our Snow ALbedo eVOlution (SALVO I & II) campaign. The SALVO team are assessing the “whys” and “how longs” of the stages of the spring melt during which albedo values drop from 0.8 to 0.1, the largest and most significant change of the year. The near-shore location of the ARM NSA observatory makes this an ideal place to investigate these melt stages.
