Sensitivity/Uncertainty Analysis for Nuclear Criticality Safety Validation [Slides]

Sensitivity coefficients predict the expected change in a response ($\kappa$) due to a change in some input parameter ($\Sigma$). These responses can be k eff (or ratios of reaction rates). These input parameters are typically nuclear data. The coefficients are dimensionless ratios. What would happen to the system k eff if some piece of data were changed by some amount? The coefficient is calculated without making the change.

Bayesian Monte Carlo Evaluation Framework for Cross Sections Nuclear Data and Integral Benchmark Experiments

The new Bayesian Monte Carlo (MC) evaluation framework described in this abstract has been conceived as an attempt to improve nuclear data evaluations of differential crosssection data by removing the following two approximations conventionally employed for nuclear data evaluations: all probability density functions (PDFs) of all data and model parameters, both prior and posterior, are assumed to be normal (i.e., Gaussian) PDFs, and all uncertainties and covariances are propagated using a linear approximation. With these approximations removed, the Bayesian MC (BMC) framework could be used to account for nonlinear effects and would enable improved evaluations of differential cross sections and IBE data that are presently performed based on the assumptions itemized above. The BMC would also improve upon the uniform sampling of IBE parameters from within ranges defined by their evaluated uncertainties.

S/U Comparison Study with a Focus on USLs

Under a DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) task involving Analytical Methods, three Laboratories collaborated in a comparison of results obtained from Sensitivity/Uncertainty (S/U) packages relevant to validation of transport codes. The task involves Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) comparing results of MORET 5/MACSENS V3.0, MCNP6.2/Whisper-1.1, and SCALE 6.2.3/TSUNAMI/USLSTATS respectively. All Monte Carlo transport code results utilize ENDF/B-VII.1. Four cases from the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP Handbook) were selected as application models: HEU-MET-FAST-013-001, HEU-SOL-THERM 001-008, PU-MET-FAST-022-001, and PU-SOL-THERM 001-001. Ultimately, comparison is made between Upper Subcritical Limits (USLs) obtained using each code package for each application case. Since differences exist in whether packages take into account margin of subcriticality (MOS), the USL may be computed using bias and bias uncertainty, also known as the calculational margin (CM) in ANSI/ANS 8.24. Application of portions of MOS to the USL for nuclear data uncertainty of and potential code margin is referred to as USL herein. In either case, additional MOS is considered for actual application cases.

The SMART Cables Initiative for Ocean and Geophysical Observing [Slides]

SMART Cables are becoming a reality, and have the potential to revolutionize submarine oceanographic and geophysical sensing. Pilot / demonstration projects are underway to test the technology and explore the feasibility of incorporating both in-repeater standardized sensor packets but also ancillary sensor types on external, branching nodes. The projects currently in planning will set the standard and influence the norms for the future of SMART systems. The interest of all potential stakeholders and users, and input as to needs and concerns, is welcomed as testing proceeds.

Horizontal Split Table Conceptual Design for Validation of Nuclear Data used in Advanced Reactors [Slides]

This presentation discusses a methodology that was developed to create conceptual designs of benchmark critical experiments for advanced reactors and nuclear data testing. A first concept that was explored was a pebble-bed high-temperature gas cooled reactor, based on the HTR-10 reactor. The very high correlation is a proof of concept that the design is similar to the application, and performing such critical experiments would help nuclear data testing and validation. Other concepts could be explored if needed, such as a molten-salt reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor, or heat pipe reactors/microreactor.

Search for Earthquake Effects in TOPEX/Poseidon Data

We have searched TOPEX/Poseidon sea surface height data for effects from six earthquakes of magnitude >6.1 during 1992-1994 in the western Pacific, including the one near Hokkaido, Japan in July 1993.

Extinction of the Dinosuars: Scientific Theory

Professor Luis Alvarez, a doctor in physics, of the University of California, Berkeley, proposed in 1980 the theory that an asteroid of 10 kilometers in diameter traveling at more than 100,000 kilometers per hour collided with the earth 65 million years ago causing the extenction of the dinosaurs.

Benchmark results with a new evaluation of 155 Gd and 157 Gd

Evaluations of gadolinium isotopes 155 Gd and 157 Gd in the resolved resonance region were performed with the code SAMMY. The main objective for revising the resonance evaluations of these isotopes was to address issues related to critical benchmark results.

Reassessing the Origins and Contemporary Relevance of ck Acceptability Parameters: Evolving Perspectives on Similarity

“Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analyses Applied to Criticality Safety Validation,” introduces sensitivity and uncertainty methods to address challenges in defining and extending areas of applicability for criticality safety validation. These areas are traditionally defined by the bounds or limits on key parameters, but establishing valid ranges and managing complex parameter variations remain challenging. NUREG/CR-6655 introduces ck and other integral indices, as well as concepts such as the completeness of benchmark coverage, to better quantify system similarities. The work proposed herein seeks to evaluate these foundational concepts to ensure that the bounds remain effective in guiding the assessment of similarity and applicability in modern applications. The concept of completeness, along with other parameters envisioned within the framework, serves as an example of the foundational ideas that have been established, though their effectiveness in practice may not be fully understood. Advancements in scripting tools, coupled with the speed and efficiency of modern computing and statistical models, now allow for faster and more thorough assessments than previously possible. These advancements also enable the identification of trends within the data, which could provide additional insight into system behavior and further broaden the scope of previously performed benchmarks. By leveraging these capabilities, we will revisit and expand the scope of these foundational methods to determine whether the necessary elements for robust similarity evaluation are already embedded, partially realized, or remain untapped.

Performance Evaluation of Different Parallel Programming Models in SCALE-Shift Sequences for Criticality and Shielding Applications [Abstract]

The SCALE code system has been widely used for nuclear criticality safety, reactor physics, radiation shielding, source term generation, and inventory analyses by researchers, industry, and regulatory bodies. Although limited support for shared- and distributed-memory parallel processing was introduced via C++ threading, OpenMP, and MPI, a hybrid parallel programming model with both distributed- and shared-memory parallelism has not been fully supported in the SCALE code system.
