Dynamics and phases of nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model

Inspired by current research on measurement-induced quantum phase transitions, we analyze the nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model with complex nearest-neighbor couplings and complex transverse fields. Unlike its unitary counterpart, the model shows a number of steady phases, stable to integrability-breaking perturbations. Some phases have robust edge modes and/or spatiotemporal long-range orders in the bulk. The transitions between the phases have extensive entanglement entropy, whose scaling with the system size depends on the number of the real quasiparticle modes in the spectrum at the transition. In particular, the volume-law scaling appears on some critical lines, protected by pseudo-Hermiticity. Both the scaling of entanglement entropy in steady states and the evolution after a quench are compatible with the non-Hermitian generalization of the quasiparticle picture of Calabrese and Cardy at least qualitatively. Traffic Shaping to Traffic Engineering in Time-Sensitive OT Network

Modern industrial automation systems increasingly depend on network infrastructures for time-critical communication, driving the need for solutions that guarantee timely and reliable data delivery. IEEE 802.1 Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) holds significant promise for converging Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) networks, enabling interoperability and supporting the coexistence of mixed-critical traffic crucial for Industry 4.0 and IIoT. To achieve deterministic communication, TSN employs various traffic shapers such as the Time-Aware Shaper (TAS), Asynchronous Traffic Shaper (ATS), and Credit-Based Shaper (CBS). However, the effective deployment of TSN in industrial automation faces several challenges. These include the non-trivial mapping of diverse industrial traffic types to specific shapers, the complexity of optimizing shaper configurations. We present a model for effective traffic engineering within TSN enabled OT Network. Our experiments also demonstrate how shaping of certain traffic types get affected in absence of precise time synchronization and propose possible solutions based on experiment results. Based on our experimental results we provide recommendations on how traffic type assignments should be done and which traffic shaping mechanisms should be used for a particular traffic type.

Identification and widespread environmental distribution of a gene cassette implicated in anaerobic dichloromethane degradation

Anthropogenic activities and natural processes release dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride), a toxic chemical with substantial ozone-depleting capacity. Specialized anaerobic bacteria metabolize DCM; however, the genetic basis for this process has remained elusive. Comparative genomics of the three known anaerobic DCM-degrading bacterial species revealed a homologous gene cluster, designated the methylene chloride catabolism (mec) gene cassette, comprising 8–10 genes encoding proteins with 79.6%–99.7% amino acid identities. Functional annotation identified genes encoding a corrinoid-dependent methyltransferase system, and shotgun proteomics applied to two DCM-catabolizing cultures revealed high expression of proteins encoded on the mec gene cluster during anaerobic growth with DCM. In a DCM-contaminated groundwater plume, the abundance of mec genes strongly correlated with DCM concentrations (R 2 = 0.71–0.85) indicating their potential value as process-specific bioremediation biomarkers. mec gene clusters were identified in metagenomes representing peat bogs, the deep subsurface, and marine ecosystems including oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), suggesting a capacity for DCM degradation in diverse habitats. Here, the broad distribution of anaerobic DCM catabolic potential infers a role for DCM as an energy source in various environmental systems, and implies that the global DCM flux (i.e., the rate of formation minus the rate of consumption) might be greater than emission measurements suggest.

Spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^-$ in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V / c beam momenta measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of π - mesons produced in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V /c. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Chemometrics and Experimental Design for the Quantification of Nitrate Salts in Nitric Acid: Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Absorption Analysis

Implementing remote, real-time spectroscopic monitoring of radiochemical processing streams in hot cell environments requires efficiency and simplicity. The success of optical spectroscopy for the quantification of species in chemical systems highly depends on representative training sets and suitable validation sets. Selecting a training set (i.e., calibration standards) to build multivariate regression models is both time- and resource-consuming using standard one-factor-at-a-time approaches. This study describes the use of experimental design to generate spectral training sets and a validation set for the quantification of sodium nitrate (0–1 M) and nitric acid (0.1–10 M) using the near-infrared water band centered at 1440 nm. Partial least squares regression models were built from training sets generated by both D- and I-optimal experimental designs and a one-factor-at-a-time approach. The prediction performance of each model was evaluated by comparing the bias and standard error of prediction for statistical significance. D- and I-optimal designs reduced the number of samples required to build regression models compared with one-factor-at-a-time while also improving performance. Models must be confirmed against a validation sample set when minimizing the number of samples in the training set. The D-optimal design performed the best when considering both performance and efficiency by improving predictive capability and reducing number of samples in the training set by 64% compared with the one-factor-at-a-time approach. The experimental design approach objectively selects calibration and validation spectral data sets based on statistical criterion to optimize performance and minimize resources.

Data from: "Reply to ‘The challenge of defining effectively-no-snow’"

This repository contains the data and code associated with the paper titled "Reply to ‘The challenge of defining effectively-no-snow’" published in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment, 2026. In this reply, we argue that the 10th percentile of peak SWE (Snow Water Equivalent), which we propose in the original article, can be used as intended given it's a standardized, impact-based benchmark for comparing snow conditions across regions, not as a literal measure of snow absence. We present new evidence with SNOwpack TELemetry (SNOTEL) data showing that years meeting the threshold are overwhelmingly associated with subsequent drought (given United States Drought Monitor conditions), supporting its hydrologic and societal relevance. We conclude that while the distinction between "effectively no snow" and "zero snow" should be clearly communicated, the original definition remains appropriate for assessing impacts on snow-dependent water systems. The file code_nree_ML_reply_2026.Rmd contains the main processing scripts which analyze the SNOTEL data. Data from the US Drought Monitor was downloaded at: https://usdmdataservices using the Get Drought Severity Statistics By Area Percent' option, saved to the *_HUC4_delineated.csv files (Hydrologic Unit Code), which are labeled accordingly. Magnetic Navigation for GPS-Denied Airborne Applications

Most current flight systems are dependent on GPS for navigation. Recently, however, navigation in GPS-denied environments has become an area of intensive research. Additional navigation sensor data can be obtained from visual observations (stars or terrain), inertial measurement units, radar, measurements of the local magnetic field, or perhaps even gravity. Absolute and relative positioning via magnetic field measurements have been shown to be viable in many applications including ground navigation, low altitude aircraft flight, and spaceflight. There is greater variability in the magnetic field over shorter distances when flying at low altitude and in ground applications, leading to more accurate positioning. However, ground-based magnetic navigation is often heavily influenced by man-made structures, especially in urban environments. This is not the case for airborne magnetic navigation since the influence of buildings, roads, etc. is negligible for typical aircraft altitudes. For absolute magnetic navigation, the positioning accuracy decreases as altitude increases for a given vehicle velocity, but the observed time variability in the field can be reclaimed by traveling faster through the field. Thus, navigation accuracy becomes a balance of speed and altitude since the higher altitude can be counterbalanced by higher velocity. To understand these effects quantitatively, we explored various techniques to aid a simulated inertial measurement unit with magnetic information. Using a technique known as two-dimensional magnetic map matching, we simulated the performance of airborne magnetic navigation at fixed speed while varying the altitude, flight direction, magnetometer data collection time, reference magnetic map bias error, and type of trajectory (over land or over ocean).

New Resource Adequacy Criteria for the Energy Transition: Modernizing Reliability Requirements

The transition toward a cleaner and more weather-dependent power system brings with it unprecedented challenges and opportunities for maintaining resource adequacy—namely, a future that includes rapid load growth, plant retirements, and a shift toward variable and energy-limited resources. Resource adequacy analyses, capacity accreditation, and the resource adequacy planning criteria are becoming increasingly important for power system planning and investment decisions. While previous ESIG reports evaluated the changing resource adequacy risks and planning practices created by the energy transition, none specifically examined potential changes to the resource adequacy criterion used for planning. The resource adequacy criterion sets the level of supply- and demand-side resources that are required for a given power system to meet reliability objectives. It is a pivotal standard that influences billions of dollars of investment decisions.

Precursor Analysis Report: Ryuk Ransomware Attack on Universal Health Services 2020

The Ryuk Ransomware Attack on Universal Health Services (UHS) 2020 Precursor Analysis Report leverages publicly available information about the 2020 UHS cyber attack and catalogs anomalous observables for each technique employed in the attack. This analysis is based upon the methodology of the Cybersecurity for the Operational Technology Environment (CyOTE) program. UHS manages over 400 hospitals and is one of the largest healthcare providers in the United States with 3.5 million patients each year. On 27 September 2020, UHS suffered a widespread ransomware attack that resulted in a denial of service to critical internet-dependent healthcare systems including workstations, phones, and data centers. Employees resorted to filing patient details with pen and paper, while other facilities had to redirect ambulances and urgent patients to other facilities for adequate care. Adversaries carried out the attack with Ryuk, a ransomware that encrypts data and generates a RyukReadMe.txt ransom note with the ransom fee to decrypt the data, varying from 15 Bitcoin (BTC) to 50 BTC, equivalent to roughly $\$$353,892 to $\$$964,617. UHS did not pay the ransom and was able to recover data through backups, but still reported an impact of $\$$67 million dollars in recovery costs. On 29 October, one month after the attack, UHS made an official statement that their systems had been restored and they were resuming normal operations. Researchers and analysts identified 18 unique techniques (used in a sequence of 19 steps) utilized during the attack with a total of 185 observables using MITRE ATT&CK® for Industrial Control Systems. The CyOTE program assesses observables accompanying techniques used prior to the triggering event to identify opportunities to detect malicious activity. If observables accompanying the attack techniques are perceived and investigated prior to the triggering event, earlier comprehension of malicious activity can take place. Fourteen of the identified techniques used during the UHS cyber attack were precursors to the triggering event. Analysis identified 106 observables associated with these precursor techniques, 82 of which were assessed to have an increased likelihood of being perceived in the 30 days to two hours preceding the triggering event. The response and comprehension time could have been reduced if the observables had been identified earlier. The information gathered in this report contributes to a library of observables tied to a repository of artifacts, data sources, and technique detection references for practitioners and developers to support the comprehension of indicators of attack. Asset owners and operators can use these products if they experience similar observables or to prepare for comparable scenarios.

Crystallographic Characterization of Sodium Ions in a Bacterial Leucine/Sodium Symporter

Na + is the most abundant ion in living organisms and plays essential roles in regulating nutrient uptake, muscle contraction, and neurotransmission. The identification of Na + in protein structures is crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of protein function in a physiological context. LeuT, a bacterial homolog of the neurotransmitter:sodium symporter family, uses the Na + gradient to power the uptake of amino acids into cells and has been used as a paradigm for the study of Na + -dependent transport systems. We have devised a low-energy multi-crystal approach for characterizing low-Z (Z ≤ 20) anomalous scattering ions such as Na + , Mg 2+ , K + , and Ca 2+ by combining Bijvoet-difference Fourier syntheses for ion detection and f” refinements for ion speciation. Using the approach, we experimentally identify two Na + bound near the central leucine binding site in LeuT. Using LeuT microcrystals, we also demonstrate that Na + may be depleted to study conformational changes in the LeuT transport cycle.

A data-driven method to estimate contamination from light ion beam transmutation at colliders

Collisions of relativistic light ions such as oxygen, neon, and magnesium, have been proposed as a way to examine the system-size dependence of dynamics typically associated with the quark-gluon plasma produced in collisions of heavier ions such as xenon, gold, or lead. Recent efforts at both the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have produced large datasets of proton-oxygen, oxygen-oxygen, and neon-neon collisions, catalyzing intense interest in experimental backgrounds associated with light ion collisions. In particular, electromagnetic dissociation of light ions while they are circulating in a collider can result in beam contamination that is difficult to simulate precisely. Here we propose a data-driven method for evaluating the potential impact of beam contaminants on physics analyses. The method exploits the time-dependence and smaller size of contaminant ion species to define control regions that can be used to quantify potential contamination effects. A simple mode

Methods and apparatus to modify a binary file for scalable dependency loading on distributed computing systems

Methods and apparatus to modify a binary file for scalable loading on distributed computing systems are disclosed. An example method to modify a binary file for scalable loading on a distributed computing system includes identifying, by executing an instruction with a processor, in the binary file a file name for a shared file, determining, by executing an instruction with the processor, whether the shared file can be loaded based on a path name specified in the binary file, and, responsive to a determination that the shared file can be loaded, generating, by executing an instruction with the processor, an identifier that can be used to access a local file scalably copied from a global file system, and modifying, by executing an instruction with the processor, the binary file by replacing, in the binary file, the file name with the generated identifier.

Learning method and system for separating independent and dependent attacks

Streams of monitoring node signal values over time, representing a current operation of the industrial asset, are used to generate current monitoring node feature vectors. Each feature vector is compared with a corresponding decision boundary separating normal from abnormal states. When a first monitoring node passes a corresponding decision boundary, an attack is detected and classified as an independent attack. When a second monitoring node passes a decision boundary, an attack is detected and a first decision is generated based on a first set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent. From the beginning of the attack on the second monitoring node until a final time, the first decision is updated as new signal values are received for the second monitoring node. When the final time is reached, a second decision is generated based on a second set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent.

ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LLMS IN UNIT TEST GENERATION FOR STRUCTURED TEXT PROGRAMS

The reliability of industrial automation systems heavily depends on the correctness of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs, which are often written in Structured Text (ST). While Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in automating test generation for mainstream programming languages, their effectiveness for the syntactically strict ST language remains underexplored. This thesis presents a systematic empirical evaluation of three state-of-the-art LLMs—GPT-4o, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Claude Sonnet 4.5—for generating ST unit tests. We examine three prompting strategies: Natural Language (NL), Code Language (CL), and Chain-of-Thought (CoT), across a curated set of 11 ST function blocks. The quality of the generated tests is assessed using Compilation Success Rate (CSR), Statement Coverage (SC), and Branch Coverage (BC). In the zero-shot setting, Claude Sonnet 4.5 achieves the highest CSR, while Gemini 2.5 Pro consistently delivers the best statement and branch coverage, particularly under CL prompts. By incorporating a one-shot CL prompt, all models exhibit substantial improvements—most notably GPT-4o, whose CSR increases from 45.45% to 90.91%, with substantial gains in both SC and BC. To further contextualize these findings, we compare GPT-4o’s one-shot results with PLCAutoTester, a state-ofthe- art ST unit test generation tool, on an additional benchmark dataset. While LLMgenerated tests approach competitive coverage levels, PLCAutoTester maintains significantly higher and more stable coverage across programs. This study provides the first comprehensive benchmark of modern LLMs for ST unit testing, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and improvements through one-shot prompting, and positioning their performance relative to specialized automated testing tools in industrial automation.

In Situ UV–vis Quantification of Chlorobasicity in Binary Molten Chlorides

Optical basicity measurements provide a basis for determining the relative chlorobasicity of a given molten salt composition. This study uses Bi3+ as a spectroscopic probe to investigate optical basicity across three binary molten chloride systems (LiCl-KCl, MgCl2–KCl, and ZnCl2–KCl) through in situ UV–vis spectroscopy measurements of the 1S0→3P1 transition. LiCl-KCl systems exhibit the highest optical basicity with minimal compositional dependence, while both divalent systems show stronger, yet nonlinear, dependence that is reminiscent of acid–base titration curves. The influence of cation electronegativity and polarizing power (Li+ < Mg2+ < Zn2+) directly reflects the basicity curves, with ZnCl2–KCl displaying the steepest gradients and lowest basicity values. Nonlinear dependencies in divalent systems indicate formation of chloride-bridged network structures with coordination states dictated by the amount of KCl in a salt composition, which was further investigated and validated by molecular dynamics simulations of polymeric structures formed in ZnCl2 and MgCl2-based salts using machine learning force fields. The temperature dependence of chlorobasicity in terms of optical basicity was investigated, and a loose, positive correlation between the two was revealed. These findings establish Bi3+ as a sensitive probe for understanding electronic environments in molten chloride systems and provide insights for predicting the chemical behavior of molten salts for use in high-temperature environments.

Robust Distribution System Load Restoration With Time-Dependent Cold Load Pickup

Service restoration is one of the critical functions to enable the future self-healing distribution system. To restore the distribution system in a timely and reliable manner, the realistic system operating conditions need to be accurately characterized. Here, two main factors that have great impacts on distribution system restoration (DSR) in practice are investigated. First, cold load pickup (CLPU), generally caused by thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs), is a common phenomenon after an outage and shaped by the outage duration. However, the time-dependent behaviors of CLPU are rarely considered in literature. In this paper, the operating state evolution of TCLs after an outage is analyzed to characterize time-dependent CLPU. And the time-dependent CLPU is analytically embedded in DSR to accurately represent the actual behaviors of the restored loads. Second, it is difficult to predict loads that fluctuate during DSR due to the lack of real-time measurement data. Accordingly, a robust DSR based on the information gap decision theory (IGDT) is proposed to address this challenge, fully considering the uncertainty of CLPU. The proposed models are tested in IEEE 13-node and 123-node test feeders. Simulation results demonstrate that the time-dependent CLPU model and the uncertainty modeling of CLPU can accurately capture the actual behaviors of loads with TCLs after an outage, which greatly improves DSR decisions in practice.
