The Land Analysis System (LAS) - A general purpose system for multispectral image processing

The present, general-purpose Land Analysis System (LAS) for image processing furnishes a comprehensive set of functions for the manipulation of MSS data; the initial version has more than 240 functions and utilities ranging from pixel manipulation to complex classification. A LAS user's guide describes each such function in terms of purpose, input parameters, illustrative examples, algorithms, error messages, and user codes. The LAS source code is so distributed as to simplify system maintenance; the Transportable Application Executive is employed as the user interface, thereby accommodating both expert and novice users by means of menus and tutored prompting.

Mesoscale and severe storms (Mass) data management and analysis system

Progress on the Mesoscale and Severe Storms (MASS) data management and analysis system is described. An interactive atmospheric data base management software package to convert four types of data (Sounding, Single Level, Grid, Image) into standard random access formats is implemented and integrated with the MASS AVE80 Series general purpose plotting and graphics display data analysis software package. An interactive analysis and display graphics software package (AVE80) to analyze large volumes of conventional and satellite derived meteorological data is enhanced to provide imaging/color graphics display utilizing color video hardware integrated into the MASS computer system. Local and remote smart-terminal capability is provided by installing APPLE III computer systems within individual scientist offices and integrated with the MASS system, thus providing color video display, graphics, and characters display of the four data types.

Space construction system analysis. Part 2: Cost and programmatics

Cost and programmatic elements of the space construction systems analysis study are discussed. The programmatic aspects of the ETVP program define a comprehensive plan for the development of a space platform, the construction system, and the space shuttle operations/logistics requirements. The cost analysis identified significant items of cost on ETVP development, ground, and flight segments, and detailed the items of space construction equipment and operations.

Improved tangent-cone method for the Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System (APAS) version of the hypersonic arbitrary-body program

The Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System (APAS) utilizes a modified version of the Hypersonic Arbitrary-Body Program (HABP) Mark 3 code in its analysis rationale. Four methods are considered for incorporation into the code as the tangent-cone method. The combination of second-order slender body theory and the approximate solution of Hammitt and Murthy shows the best agreement with the exact numerical solutions and is thus included in the APAS production version of the HABP code.

A Graphical User-Interface for Propulsion System Analysis

NASA LeRC uses a series of computer codes to calculate installed propulsion system performance and weight. The need to evaluate more advanced engine concepts with a greater degree of accuracy has resulted in an increase in complexity of this analysis system. Therefore, a graphical user interface was developed to allow the analyst to more quickly and easily apply these codes. The development of this interface and the rationale for the approach taken are described. The interface consists of a method of pictorially representing and editing the propulsion system configuration, forms for entering numerical data, on-line help and documentation, post processing of data, and a menu system to control execution.

A comprehensive solar energy system analysis data base in Huntsville, Alabama

The history of a comprehensive solar energy system analysis data base developed by NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Alabama is presented, along with its current status. The Marshall Information Retrieval and Data Storage (MIRADS) system was chosen for the data base, and feedback systems were arranged to cope with changes in the needs of the program management for the type of data gathered. The final structure of the data base consists of 22 files divided into 6 topical sections: summaries, climatological, utility rates, architectural, equipment, and economics. The data base offers help to the solar industry in two ways: it provides information and it serves as a model for users trying to establish the climatic and socioeconomic variables they should take into account when they examine a potential market for solar energy equipment.

NASA Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate Mission and Trade Study Analysis

Mission analysis, as practiced by the NASA Langley Research Center's Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate (SACD), consists of activities used to define, assess, and evaluate a wide spectrum of aerospace systems for given requirements. The missions for these systems encompass a broad range from aviation to space exploration. The customer, who is usually another NASA organization or another government agency, often predefines the mission. Once a mission is defined, the goals and objectives that the system will need to meet are delineated and quantified. A number of alternative systems are then typically developed and assessed relative to these goals and objectives. This is done in order to determine the most favorable design approaches for further refinement. Trade studies are performed in order to understand the impact of a requirement on each system and to select among competing design options. Items varied in trade studies typically include: design variables or design constraints; technology and subsystem options; and operational approaches. The results of trade studies are often used to refine the mission and system requirements. SACD studies have been integral to the decision processes of many organizations for decades. Many recent examples of SACD mission and trade study analyses illustrate their excellence and influence. The SACD-led, Agency-wide effort to analyze a broad range of future human lunar exploration scenarios for NASA s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) and the Mars airplane design study in support of the Aerial Regional-scale Environment Survey of Mars (ARES) mission are two such examples. This paper describes SACD's mission and trade study analysis activities in general and presents the lunar exploration and Mars airplane studies as examples of type of work performed by the SACD.

Interactive systems analysis of four structural concepts for a Land Mobile Satellite System

Weight and structural analysis data were generated for four structural concepts for a Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) using the Interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) computer-aided design and analysis program. Structural concepts analyzed included the wrapped radial rib, box ring, tetrahedral truss, and hoop column. Estimates of total spacecraft weight, structural natural frequencies and modal shapes were determined and compared for several loading conditions for each concept. Spacecraft-induced and environmental effects on antenna performance (surface accuracy, defocus and boresight offset) are quantified.
