Stabilizing an easy axis of magnetization in an octahedral Co(II) complex is an extremely challenging task, which is evident from reports that more than 90% possess easy-plane anisotropy. Here, we report a six-coordinate complex, [Co(L 1 ) 4 (Cl) 2 ] (1, L 1 = thiourea [H 2 N-CS-NH 2 ]), that exhibits a D value of -63(10) cm -1 . The presence of an easy axis of magnetization associated with 1 is experimentally proven by detailed magnetic studies and polarized neutron diffraction studies, and the experimental observations are well corroborated by theoretical calculations. From the combined experimental and theoretical investigations (on 1 and many model systems), we unveil the parameters that control stabilization of negative D in a thermodynamically favorable and air-stable Co(II) ion in the common distorted octahedral geometry. This study paves the way for overcoming the current impediments to alleviate the easy axis of magnetization using rational ligand choice.

Using readily available pre-allylated aldehydes, in this work we report a simple and divergent synthesis of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) iminium precursors. Using a combination of crystallographic data and steric maps, we further elaborate on the specific steric properties of CAAC ligands with respect to state-of-the-art phosphine and carbene ligands.

Low-level clouds in a marine environment are examined using multiple ground-based instruments. Here, we used Doppler radar and Doppler lidar measurements (1) to examine cloud properties including cloud base and top height and thickness and (2) to investigate vertical velocity (w) statistics throughout the subcloud and in-cloud layers. Marine stratocumulus (Sc) and shallow cumulus (Cu) clouds have distinct properties in their horizontal and vertical extent. We also find that the two cloud types have different thermodynamic (coupled and decoupled conditions) and dynamical characteristics for the first four moments of the w distributions (mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis). We identify a strong dependence of subcloud mean w on near-surface horizontal wind direction, implying that topographic effects exert a substantial impact on boundary layer dynamics and cloud properties at Graciosa Island. Our findings strongly suggest that care must be taken when interpreting island-based observations as representative of a generic marine dynamical environment. This information also can be useful for guiding and constraining the future global model development using observational dataset.
ThO 2 and UO 2 nanoparticles synthesized using a COF-5 template exhibit unpassivated surfaces and provide insight into nanoscale properties of actinides.
Here, in this work, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of a 2D coordination polymer composed of a dianionic perhydroxylated boron cluster, [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ], coordinated to Zn( II )—the first example of a transition metal-coordinated [B 12 (OH) 12 ] 2– compound. This material was synthesized via cation exchange from the starting cesium salt and then subjected to rigorous characterization prior to and after thermal activation. Numerous techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and solid-state NMR revealed a 2D coordination polymer composed of sheets of Zn( II ) ions intercalated between planes of boron clusters. The as-synthesized material was then evacuated of solvent via thermal treatment, and atomic-level changes from this transformation were elucidated through a combination of 1D and 2D solid-state NMR analyses of 11 B and 1 H nuclei, suggesting the full removal of coordinated solvent molecules. Evidence also suggested that [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ] can adjust its coordination to Zn( II ) in the solid-state through hemilability of its numerous –OH ligands.
In this perspective, we presented our group’s journey to design biomaterials using LCEs and as inks for 3D printing. We addressed properties sought in a scaffold that address cells’ specific needs, and how we used the intrinsic properties of LCEs to influence on cell behavior.
